I just discovered something shocking.

If you just type “& hearts” (without the space) you don’t need a semi-colon to still get the graphic.

Also, what's the best theme park you've ever been to?

I’m going to Knoebel’s next week. Nice old-timey style park, wooden coasters, cheap good food, and all that. The only thing I can find wrong with it is people smoke everywhere in it. Still much better than the commercialized madness of a Six Flags or Disney shithole.

by Faux on Aug 15, 2008 7:51 AM PDT reply actions

Six Flags Magic Mountain, absolutely no doubt in my mind

I’m not at the park for the themes – I’m there because the rides ROCK.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Disneyland as well. But no more than once a year. Or once every two years. Or only with pretty girls. I think that’s enough disclaimers.

Yeah, I'm not much of a ride person.

I’ll get on them if someone wants me to, but I just don’t find them that exciting.

On the topic though, what do you think of the rides at Knottsberry Farms? I was there and really liked the place (and atmosphere) in general, but I don’t ride enough rides to know if they stack up to a Six Flags or similar.

by Faux on Aug 15, 2008 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Better than the two Disney parks for sure. Definitely not in the league of Six Flags

Well… actually they have a few rides that are near Six Flags quality, it’s just that Six Flags has about ten pretty awesome rides (e.g. enough that you can ride each one once in a day, kill the whole day, and have a great time)

if you want atmosphere and not too much over the top commercialization, Knott’s is probably the best in SoCal. For cheesiness and stupid fun, Disney. For rides and such, SF MM.

Cedar Point, Ohio, by far.

if you like roller coasters, that’s where to go. There’s about a dozen, and they’re all awesome. Next year I want to go to Kings Island and ride this one.

Cedar Point rules

I go about once a year and enjoy it every time. And the new Kings Island one does look sick, but Kings island has limited land to build new rides so they don’t get new ones as frequently as Cedar Point

Holy crap! I feel for you. I broke my forearm last year.

The ends of the bones punched through a bunch of nerves and tendons. The nerve damage was the slow part of the healing process, after 7 months I thought I was going to wind up with a claw for a hand. Tried acupuncture out of desperation, within 2 weeks everything was nearly back to normal. Maybe not for everybody, but something to keep in mind. Wish I’d tried it a lot earlier in the healing process.

I haven't been there for a couple of years

but their arcade is bigger than most alleys and the concourse is pretty wide. That said, I don’t really care for it one way or another.

It’s sad, because I really did like Leilani Lanes. I swear it was the easiest house in Seattle. I bowled a lot at Hiline in Burien, and I know the guy who runs it, but the shot at least always used to be a challenge to me. The owner, Pat Johns, knows how to make you a better bowler.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Aug 15, 2008 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Majestic is all about big screen TV's and the arcade.

The lanes aren’t even really separated so you have kids running in front of you on your approach and a bunch of other crap. Lelani was cool, my grandparents lived right across the street, so I bowled there when I was younger. Robin Hood is my favorite now, and Glacier isn’t bad either.

Today's rivalry research moment is going to be against Kansas City.

Surely, the battle of Grass Creek, Wyoming will be noted. But can anyone think of anything else interesting that ever happened against the Royals?

I thought Beltran owned the M's when he played with the Royals

but it turns out he beat up on Texas with a .953 OPS (just .893 vs the M’s)

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Aug 15, 2008 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

The M's won 2 games out of 6 in the last month of the season against the 1987 Royals.

The ’87 Royals finished two games back of the Twins, despite winning five of their last six ballgames Vs. Minnesota.

Arguably, the M’s winning just two games out of 6 locked them out.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Aug 15, 2008 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Trade of Danny Tartabull

which was mentioned elsewhere today.

Also, Gaylord Perry was picked up by KC when he was DFA’d by the M’s in 1983.

There’s the ‘Turn Ahead the Clock Night’ game in 1998.

Randy Johnson struck out 16 Royals in a CG win in 1997.

by marc w on Aug 15, 2008 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions

A few others...

1979: George Brett walks off with a HR against Byron McLaughlin in the bottom of the 11th. The win keeps the Royals’ playoff hopes alive, but they would end up missing the playoffs anyway.

1985: Lee Gutterman collects his 10th win of 1985, Mariners pitchers hold Brett and former Mariner Danny Tartabull hitless in the game where Phil Bradley goes 3-4 with 2 RBI as the Mariners eliminate the Royals from playoff contention with a 5-1 victory.

2000: Gil Meche spins a one-hitter against the Royals en route to a 7-0 victory on June 13.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Aug 15, 2008 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Johnson still allowed 4 runs in that game. How about this?

Johnson strikes out 10 in 7 innings against the Royals, but gives up four runs. Jay Buhner puts the Mariners ahead with a 3-run homer in the 5th to make the score 6-4. Johnson would not give up a run after the third inning of play.

In fact, Johnson would not give up another run until June 10 in a game against the Rockies. His 32-inning scoreless streak would be the longest in his MLB career (barring something crazy this year).

by seattlebruin on Aug 15, 2008 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions

That's on my list, but that's not the one I found.

July 28, 1998.

Randy Johnson makes what would be his last start as a Mariner, striking out 12 Cleveland Indians, and giving up just 4 hits in a complete game effort. David Bell would hit a home run in the 8th innings, however, that would put the Indians up for good, 4-3. Johnson would be traded to the Astros soon after, and David Bell would become a Mariner on August 31 in a trade for fan-favorite Joey Cora.

On the other hand, the M's did have a kid in the minors

who was going to be a pretty good shortstop. I think his name was Rodriguez.

Sure, the timing was a year early and the M’s should have gotten better value (maybe plugging the LF hole that the Mariners always had before the coming of Randy Winn), but you can hardly argue with the idea of moving Little O to make room for A-Rod.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Aug 15, 2008 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions

They traded him when A-Rod was 18

there’s no way you could project that a HS draftee would be big league ready in 1-2 years, and even if so, that’s 1-2 years before Vizquel would have been really blocking A-Rod anyway

The ♥ Jose Lopez ♥ Watch - 147 H, 16 BB, 42 G Left

by seattlebruin on Aug 15, 2008 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Rodriguez was a September call-up in 1994.

And was brought up in May of ’95 before his ’96 season when he finished 2nd in the MVP voting. I think they had a decent guess that he was going to be good.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Aug 15, 2008 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Except he was not September call-up in 1994

There WAS no September of ‘94 due to the players’ strike. He played in July of ’94.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Aug 15, 2008 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but he's really not a typical player - he wasn't particularly ready for the show in '94 or '95

which means you would have had two years before you really had to worry about it anyway – and that would have been being super optimistic

by seattlebruin on Aug 15, 2008 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't know this before today, but I looked it up and had to take a step back:

Rodriguez played at A, AA, and AAA levels in 1994, hitting .311/.354/.588 at Calgary in 119 ABs.

He also hit .360/.409/.654 next year when the M’s moved their AAA affiliate to Tacoma (54 G, 218 AB).

Wow.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Aug 15, 2008 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

OK, he was pretty good

really good, a once in a lifetime talent

Still though, Vizquel was traded before the 1994 season and there was no way to predict that even a player as talented as A-Rod would be ready that quickly

by seattlebruin on Aug 15, 2008 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

That's true that you can't just assume that Rodriguez will

suddenly have an MVP-level season in just his third year of pro ball. That’s insane. But Jesus Christ he was good.

Yeah, he was the first guy to mob Griffey at the plate.

I'm becoming (more of) a wuss in my old age

About a month ago, a friend and I hatched this great plan – we were going to ride our bikes from Portland to Keizer to take in a Salem-Keizer Volcanoes game, our wives would meet us down there and we’d throw the bikes on the rack and drive home. We identified Aug 16 as the date that would work best for all of us, so we penciled it in.

But, it’s supposed to be 104 degrees tomorrow. Now, 10 years ago, this wouldn’t have bothered me, but the thought of riding nearly 50 miles through the valley in 104 degree heat just doesn’t thrill me, so we’re going to the beach and having a bbq instead.

What I can’t decide is if I should be feeling guilty about this.

I kinda feel bad for the guy
Sexson was brought in with the idea of giving the Yankees a better attack against lefty pitching. But the dramatic holes in the first baseman’s swing made him too easy an out.

I bet he would be a cool guy to drink beer and shoot pool with, but I just don’t want him on my baseball team. Wonder how he’d be as a color guy… replace Blowers? I think he’s probably done as a player.
