Dunn ---> D-Backs
Dunn is owed about $4 million for the rest of the year, and the money is expected to be split between Cincinnati and the D-Backs.
The D-Backs sent right-hander Dallas Buck and two minor league players to be named for Dunn.
Buck, a third-round draftee in 2006, missed the last half of 2007 and the first half of 2008 after undergoing Tommy John surgery but has pitched well since returning.
Between low Class A and high Class A stops in South Bend and Visalia, Buck is 1-5 with a 3.55 ERA.
Seems like a real good deal for the D-Backs.

Wouldn't be surprised if Arizona's two draft picks end up better than the players they traded

I don't get how Cincinnati benefits from this unless the lower-level guys are quite interesting

Buck's got huge GB rates, but is otherwise a BOR starter
but hey, Northwest Ties! Oregon State! Did you know they won 2 national championships?
Matthew’s right, this has Bavasi’s handwriting all over it.

I've heard some people say he could be a #3 starter someday.
But yeah, the point still remains.

I guess it's possible - maybe a Derek Lowe-style #3
he’s looked better the farther he gets from that TJ surgery. Maybe Bavasi thought that after Uhlmansiek and Varvaro that THIS guy had to come up aces.
You’d know more than I would, but this guy was never a top 10 AZ spect, right? He’s missed more bats than I thought he would, but then, he’s 23 and has been in the MWL this year. Again, it’s to be expected coming off of surgery, but… he just had surgery, is 23, and has been in the MWL this year. Hmm.

Yeah, I've heard the Lowe comp before.
His ceiling is considered that some people, and yeah most believe it’s a long shot he even makes it to the majors at all. My knowledge of DBacks prospects isn’t as good beyond the top handful of guys. I mostly rely on other fans for info. So take it with a grain of salt.

Anybody know the single season team record for strikeouts? Because, holy crap.
Mark Reynolds. Chris Young, Justin Upton(who’s due back within the week supposedly), Adam Dunn. That’s a whole lotta K’s.
I’m a little shocked we were able to keep Chad Tracy. The common accepted belief was that if we upgraded first base, that Tracy was going away in the process. Basically sacrificing some roster flexibility next year for instant upgrade. But they didn’t. Neat. There was talk last year when O-Dawg went down of trying Reynolds at 2B, since he’s played there in the minors before, and moving Tracy back to third. I wonder if those talks will pick up again.

Another reason it can't be Scherzer
From ESPN’s Transaction Primer.
There are two restrictions at work here. First, the transaction must be completed within six months. And second, the player named later can’t have played in the same league as the team he’s being traded to. That’s why the player named later is almost always a minor leaguer.
Scherzer has pitched for the DBacks this year.
So as long as one of the PTBNL’s isn’t Jarrod Parker, it’s all good.

Per Melvin during press conference:
Dunn goes to right, Jackson stays in left, Tracy stays at first. This is just until Upton returns.
Lineup:
Drew
Jackson
Tracy
Dunn
Reynolds
Young
Snyder
Oejada
Reporter:Hey Bob, what do you think of Dunn being on all or nothing guy with all the strikeouts?
Melvin:He’s not an all or nothing guy, yeah he K’s alot and hits alot of homers, but he also gets on base at a high high clip. Doesn’t matter how many times he strikes out, as long as he gets on base and hits homers. Right now, he plays right, beyond that when Justin returns, we’ll see. I’d like to keep Conor in left, his defense has been good out there. Dunn can play first as well, we’ll see. Reynonds plays 3rd for now, we haven’t ruled out him moving to 2nd. We’ll see when we get to that point.
Byrnes talks about him being a rental player, and talks about the compensation picks. He’s surprised LA or Colorado didn’t put in a claim to block the DBacks.

While I support the move
I think it’s funny that, in the span of a few days, Arizona lost one of the best defensive players in baseball and added one of the worst.

Yeah. But is Hudson really still one of the best defensive players in baseball? Seems to me that his defense is declining.

but UZR’s still a pretty big fan. I suppose he’s probably not one of the best overall anymore, but I imagine he’s still one of the best 2B.

Only thing anyone on Dodgers boards can think of
is that Coletti didn’t want to have to pay Dunn’s salary if Reds said okay. Supposedly the Dodgers are way over budget or something and with an already stupid crowded OF grabbing Dunn to block the D-Backs wasn’t working.

If that’s the reason Coletti passed on making a claim then Coletti is a giant piece of stupid.
Oh…
by Matthew on Aug 11, 2008 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That can't have been his reason. Seriously.
I agree that if it was then his brain is made of fail, but we also have no reason to believe he’s not lying to the press.
Then again, we’ve been worried in the past that someone might accept arbitration even though there was no chance of that.

It might not be that Coletti passed on the deal
It might be that ownership is pulling on his reins hard, and basically not letting him take on any money at all, or even risk taking on any money at all.
There have been reports, including from Rosenthal, that McCourt is not letting Coletti take on any money.

Goose: What are your thoughts on Silver Slugger Owings -> Reds?
by HARRYP09 on Aug 12, 2008 6:47 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm fine with it.
It’s no secret that Micah is(was?) my favorite DBack. We all know about his bat as a pitcher. He’s fun to watch.
But the bottom line is this. Until he figures out how to throw a third pitch, he’s never going to be a good major league pitcher. His fastball and slider aren’t good enough on their own for him to succeed. He got away with it partially last year, due to the fact that his command was as good as it’s ever been. But when he reverted back to not being able to hit his spots this year, and not being able to improve his changeup, he got hammered.
He’s still just 25, so there’s room to improve. And his bat helps his value a little. But it’s not enough to offset the pitching. Unless he figures out that change, is able to perfect his command, or the Reds covert him to first base or something, I don’t know if he’ll be able make it in the majors. I could see him as a reliever, because he had limited success there this year with just the two pitches, but then his bat becomes moot in that role.
I’m still gonna root for him. I hope he at least carves out a niche as a reasonable 5th starter, so at least he gets the chance to hit plenty of bombs in that little league park in Cinci.

I still like this deal, but it’s obviously not the slam dunk it was before. Gotta wait and see who the last person is before I make final judgment.

His tRA+ is 97.
That’s a #3/4 pitcher.

Really? Huh.
I knew he was basically averageish last year, but I figured his tRA would be a good deal worse this year.
Still, a #4ish starter, a pretty meh pitching prospect and ??? for Adam Dunn,$2M, and 2 draft picks is a pretty good deal.

Rumors going around that the 2nd PTBNL is Wilkin Castillo.
I don’t know anything about Castillo. Quick look at his numbers have him with a .660 OPS in Tuscon at 24 years old. He has a .281/.322/.396 career line in the minors. Sickels has this to say about him:
A switch-hitting Dominican catcher with a quick bat, Castillo shows intriguing line-drive hitting skills. His strike zone judgment is weak and he doesn’t draw many walks, but he has a knack for making contact even on pitches he shouldn’t swing at. He probably won’t hit for a great deal of power, but if he can keep the batting average up he should be useful. Castillo is quite athletic and has good speed for a catcher, though he doesn’t use it very well on the bases and gets caught stealing too much. He has a strong arm and good defensive skills, and is athletic enough that he can even play middle infield in an emergency. I don’t think he’ll hit quite enough to start for a major league team, but he should get to the majors as a backup and could have a long career due to his versatility. Grade C.
So the final deal looks to be Micah Owings, Dallas Buck, and Wilkin Castillo for Adam Dunn and $2 Million(and 2 draft picks when he signs elsewhere in the offseason).
I’ll take it.
