Ichiro ----> HR Derby

According to this page:

http://hochi.yomiuri.co.jp/mlb/news/20080710-OHT1T00002.htm

Ichiro is going to be on the HR Derby this year.  That will be very interesting.  Since he hit a inside-the-park HR last year in the all star game, perhaps the HR derby can have a special rule for Ichiro this year:  a ball that hits the wall with some random bounce also counts as an HR.

Can anyone confirm this news?

If true,

this Ichiro to a whole new level of awesome. Unless of course he fails to hit any out.

I also hope this is true.

I’ve been wanting this ever since Hee Seop Choi took his spot a few years back.

Oh man

I hope this is true.

This is the list on Wikipedia right now:

Lance Berkman
Ryan Braun
Josh Hamilton
Grady Sizemore
Dan Uggla
Chase Utley

There’s two more slots, according to MLB.com, which should be able to add at least one non-American to that list. Hopefully it’s Ichi.

So I checked Wikipedia

Apparently Seattle has the most wins, participants, and HRs of any franchise. Woo.

I was tempted to add Willie to the list.

I watched last year's, first I've watched in years

I’ll have to plug in the cable TV and watch for sure if Ichiro’s competing.

I never replaced a dead splitter

And obviously I prefer my internet to Comscab’s fine basic cable selection.

by Gomez on Jul 9, 2008 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Fuck that

you can get one for $2 at wal*mart

by JI on Jul 9, 2008 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Fuck you for making me bring my work home with me

Radio shack is indeed over priced but regardless you need a splitter that is bi-directional if you want it to work with cable internet and the cheap ones usually aren’t.

by Robert on Jul 9, 2008 11:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Radio shack tried to charge me $14.99 for some fucking phone line that wasn't in stock

I said no that’s okay I can somewhere else, they said, oh here we can check other location, I said sure, okay, check, they said there way phone line at another location, I said okay thanks, they said, oh you can pay for it here and then pick it up there, I asked why would I want to do that, the guy said oh so I can get comission on it. Bitch I don’t care about your commission on some goddamn phone line, I’ll go brave the toilet-paper quesadilla eating troglodytes at the trailer park Shopko and get some phone line and a box of Milk Duds for $4.

The moral of the story: Radio Shack lost all value in the universe when it went from being a store that sold bomb making and pay phone hacking components to a fancy-dressed T-Mobile carnival booth.

Gold plated is actually WORSE

maybe because of it’s high conductivity, it picks up more garbage noise from the various broadcast towers around Seattle. To get a cleaner, faster signal, stick with the steel clunkers that Comcast will give you for free.

by johnbai on Jul 11, 2008 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I did at one point.

It blew, and I ended up rewiring my house for a distro block instead of using splitters.

Honestly, go to a real electronics store (fry’s, etc.) and get one of the digital-ready from there. They’ll cost you about 10 for a 4 way, and last longer than the gold ones.

by Faux on Jul 10, 2008 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Just make sure to get one...

from the electronics part section if possible.

Unless Fry’s has changed their ways in the past 3-4 years (I’m on the east coast now), they had the installer-grade stuff in the DIY area, and some cheapies and overpriced yuppie ones with brand names on them in the TV section. I’d look in both spots, but expect the one in the DIY section to be a couple bucks cheaper for pretty much the same product, unbranded.

by Faux on Jul 10, 2008 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions

I had a gold splitter and it picked up a lot of interference

but I should note that I live right next to the broadcast towers on Capitol Hill. The basic ones worked MUCH better for me. I returned the gold one asap.

Here's babelfish's take:

[ichiro] "rejoicing," sphere banquet home run competition Japanese first participation! The [ichiro] outfielder (34) of [marinazu] preceding day of all star game, is done on the 14th, in "home run competition" (Yankee stadium), it became decisive to participate for the first time with the Japanese player. With free shock, American major league mechanism observes to [ichiro] which shows the power of the other slugger face being defeated. Also back number 51, from the event which decorates the rust year of sanctuary of measure, seems that request willing consent is done.

ichiro, leaves the name to the ball park of the legend which closes the curtain at limited to this season. In "the home run competitive" participation 8 player, 6 people decide already. In the remaining 2 framework of the [a] league which is observed, it came to the point of for the first time connecting name as a Japanese. So far, while receiving offer, you refused, but the MLB authorized personnel this year participation is strong request. This year from the fact that it becomes the last event favorite at the Yankee stadium, it seems that sets the intention which finally faces to "the contest of dream" of the measure prominent power hitters.

The veil the genius hitter as a "long distance gun" is dispersed. If "you aim in the sphere banquet of last year, home run can be struck the season no book?""If (batting average) it is possible to be 2 percentage 2 minute, you will call 40?", that you answered to the question that with the serious look. With practice before the playing the owner of the capability which shoots in rapid succession the [saku] exceeding with free shock. The long hitting power is the place where everyone of the MLB authorized personnel recognizes not to be restricted inside the [ma] troop.

There is special meaning in participating at the Yankee stadium. 6 days which 8 year continual sphere banquet participation decides "(destiny and edge) it is not it cannot boil, probably will be. Perhaps also the New York fan the favorite to put out my thing, exists because it is the only place where conversation as a player of the fan and the enemy", with you talked the charm of the NY fan. The [saku] exceeding is shot with practice, at each time rear catch is done "it has energy in the stand where large cheer boils. Showing is and it is and, it is funny, is, don’t you think?" with extolling the fan. It is the intention of making the people rejoice who such an eye gain with home run competition.

Above participating, you aim there is only victory. Already the intention is conveyed to the MLB authorized personnel, you say that preparation is being advanced steadily. Last year the back number 51 which acquires MVP with sphere banquet first running home run. In the past, [yankisu] Matsui "as for home run competition those where the person who should come out is present. There is no stage which comes out simply", it is the intention with the dream stage which is the reputation which was said, this year of holding down the sphere boundary prominent slugger and being packed, discovering victory.

  • In Japan as for 3 time participation [ichiro] in the Japanese of Orikkusu era sphere banquet 3 times, you participate in home run competition. 95 years of first participation faced Yukio Nippon Meat Packers, Inc. Tanaka, closely as an iron Nakamura period ocean (present middle day), and also a Pacific League representation shot the arch 4 with 10 swings. As for 97 years during 5 swinging 1. 99 years which had become 3rd were "[sashi] game" of Yakult [petajini] and 5 swings, but only 1 it could strike, was defeated in 3 these [peta] guns.
  • In rule Japan of home run competition no book it strikes at the number of swings which are decided, you dispute, but with measure swinging, until it counts the batted ball other than home run entirely in out, becomes 10 out it decides at quantity which is struck. The participation 8 player with 1st round the superior 4 people, with 2nd round is squeezed to the superior 2 people at number of totals of 1st round. Final at just the decides the champion quantity of main.

Rizz was just talking about it on the radio.

This will probably be Mariner Highlight #2 of the year.

by Jed MC on Jul 9, 2008 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

Not really.

I was chasing my 3 year old around the living room and heard him say something like “people think Ichiro could win the HR Derby”. I gave him to my wife so I could listen, but Rizz was done talking about it by the time I got back to the radio.

We should know by the weekend

Last paragraph of this article on Vlad not participating.

This would be toooooo fucking epic. Just watch, Riggleman won’t let him for fear that he’ll blow his arm out. Didn’t that happen to Jose Canseco’s neighbor’s kid once in a little league home run derby?

all too amusing Babel Fish translation

On the 10th, all star game (15 days [yankisutajiamu]) the home run Derby which is done in preceding day (home run competition) concerning the possibility of participation "perhaps there is no", [ichiro] outfielder of [marinazu] that intention of non participation was made clear. From 2002 of measure 2nd year every year, at below water participation request is received from American major league mechanism, but because "the feeling which is said to someone does,…"With the reason of non participation was explained in unique expression. Home run competition 4 people at a time is elected from [a], and the [na] both league disputes frequency of fence exceeding. 4 players of [na] have informally decided, but as for [a] 2 players for undecided, participation of [ichiro] had become rumor.

FWIW here is a more accurate translation

The headline says something like Ichiro Becomes First Japanese to Enter Home Run Race Battle (Derby probably)

The first line goes something like this:
Yesterday it was decided that Mariners All-Star Ichiro (34), will become the first Japanese player to participate in the Home Run Derby on the 14th at Yankee Stadium.
