7/8: Open Game Thread
Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics, Jul 8, 2008 7:05 PM PDT
Even on a day during which they traded their best player, this pitching matchup still feels like the A's are bragging. We get it, you're smarter than us. Give it a rest already.
Erik Bedard's been shut down through the All Star Break, by the way. I can't think of another player in baseball who's more in need of a couple weeks' rest.

Holy fuck this lineup sucks.
1. RF Ichiro
2. SS Bloomquist
3. “LF” Ibanez
4. “DH” Vidro
5. 3B Beltre
6. CF Reed
7. “1B” Sexson
8. C Clement
9. “2B” Cairo

I apologize about last night, I think we've learned a valuable lesson though.
We’re not good at invading.
Playing Vidro again huh Riggleman?
What the fuck.
He'll keep playing him until they send him away
He doesn’t have much of a choice. Johjima is hitting just as bad as Vidro, and Burke is a backup-backup catcher. Of course they could put Raul at DH, and Willie as the everyday LF, but…...
Even if that argument made sense
(And it doesn’t, there are guys in AAA now who could probably hit a little better than him and they’re actually going to be around next year. It would better serve our interests to see if they have what it takes to hit in the majors than to let an old guy who’s finished as a ballplayer take up a roster spot.)
How does that excuse batting him 4th when he is one of your worst hitters?
You are right about the batting order
I doubt Riggleman has much power as far as sending players up or down.
He's not doing much to prove he's better at the job than Mac.
This makes me unbelievably sad.
He's been winning games, therefore he is a good manager
(Warning: Sarcasm possible in this statement)
Vidro
Must be the worst DH cleanup hitter in the history of the world. Who the hell puts an out machine in the middle of the lineup?
DHs have to go in the middle of the lineup
It’s an unspoken rule in baseball

I'm sick of watching Clement hit
with nobody on base. Damn it richie.
I just got the complete X-Files boxset.
It’s looking rather appealing.
Everything up through and including Season 8 is worth watching - Robert Patrick resurrected the show after a lame 7th Season
But dear god does Season 9 ever suck. Stay far, far away.
Best season is probably Season 6, I’d say.
I root for the two worst teams in baseball, non-ironically.
So I had a crazy thought this afternoon
Should I try opening a game thread where the first post of every subthread has to be about baseball?
It would have to logically flow i nto offtopicness

I say you save that rule for Felix Days or other games when we should actually pay attention to the game
One of the reasons I like Tits is because I look forward to the often amusing game threads that usually accompany his starts
If done right

I'm just getting tired of people trying to out gay me on Felix day

A US serviceman has the watch outside Da Nang in 1968 about a month before the Tet Offensive. He is keeping an eye on an enemy position some twenty miles distant. All of a sudden, out of the corner of his eye, he sees something flashing through the sky, and moments later, the VC anti-aircraft guns light up the sky. At first he thinks he must be watching a US fighter on a mission, but the silhouette is wrong — too long, and shaped strangely. Wide-eyed, he realizes what he is looking at just in time to see the shape streak off to the horizon. Beside him, the radio crackles to life: air traffic control is going crazy, they spotted a bogey they don’t recognize and they are frantic trying to figure out what’s going on. What, his commander asks him, the hell is going on out there?
"Sir," says the grunt, "I saw commies missing Santa Claus."

Thats how players are measured. Anyone remember when we played Roy Halladay last week. His manager was asked what made him so good, and he responded with “his attitude and his character.”
Speaking of Richie

So, Silva (like Tits) is taking thinly veiled shots at Bedard
His comments in postgame:
“Five innings, 100 pitches, that’s not me,’’ Silva said.
Meanwhile, Geoff Baker is seeing things
Duchscherer was outstanding. He threw strikes early in the count, but mixed his pitches well. He’d throw the odd 94 mph fastball to keep the M’s honest, but was more pitcher than thrower in this one.
Justin Duchscherer threw exactly zero pitches faster than 88 miles per hour.
by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 8, 2008 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions
It turns out, Silva made a between-starts mechanical adjustment. Pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, an ex-sinkerballer himself, felt Silva was squeezing the ball too hard. So, instead of holding his hands up near his chest as he began his windup - which Silva felt caused his arms to press together and his fingers to grip the ball tighter - he held them at waist level tonight.“We’ve been trying so many things,’’ Silva said of the work he’s done between starts with Stottlemyre. “We’ve been working so hard.’‘
