Sabathia Trade Return Finalized

Team officials have made it officially official. It's LaPorta, Zach Jackson, Rob Bryson and a PTBNL.

LaPorta is well known enough. Jackson is a former 1st rounder who came to the Brewers (with Dave Bush) in the increasingly hilarious Overbay trade. Can't say much else about him except that his AAA numbers are underwhelming and that at 25, he's at the age when good prospects become farm-system filler.

Bryson is a minor league reliever with strikeout stuff and good control. But he's a 20 year old reliever pitching in an A league, so. There's also a PTBNL... overall, it's hard to say who screwed whom here. LaPorta is nice, but Sabathia would have garnered two nice picks next June.

Yes.

But this is old news nonetheless.

er no

the return was only announced today, and was not mentioned in that thread. And it’s significant what the return is as Bedard is very much on the block and this trade will set the market for him. Right now, I’d say it actually looks pretty good; a top bat plus two pitchers who aren’t total crap for 2.5 months of Sabathia bodes well for what we can get for a guy who won’t hit FA till after 09.

LaPorta was announced yesterday.

And he is the only player worth mentioning.

I am going to sound like an ass here only because I don’t think this was worth a FanPost with a thread already dedicated to the trade, but are you going to start another thread when the PTBNL is announced?

Phrases need not be capitalised

nor do they need to have periods at the end. I’m all for elevating the grammar in blog comments. That said, the grammar policing is, I think, a reaction to complete orthographic and syntactic chaos which this blog isn’t really a victim of. There are so many worthier causes to pursue than posting a shift key picture after every uncapitalized subject line.

But hey, it’s your show and I’ll abide by whatever rules are set.

the trend for number of attractive women in the field

kinda goes the opposite way. Biology is really the happy medium in terms of scientific rigor and babes. I guess I should clarify that I mean molecular biology.

It's not the types of FanPosts,

it’s the repetitiveness. And when an admin already covers the topic, it becomes that more redundant.

Anyway, I digress. I have a habit of making an issue more of an issue than it should be.

FWIW, I welcome diaries like this

LaPorta + some stuff could mean anything.
Getting actual info on what the Indians are getting back is helpful in analyzing the trade.

by marc w on Jul 7, 2008 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

happily, what you think is worth mentioning

does not determine the content here. Besides, if its LaPorta and nothing else that still significant in determining the trade market. For what its worth, Bryson is one of their better minor league arms. a younger version of Josh Fields.

I am going to sound like an ass…

that’s just weak.

I think it's a fair deal

LaPorta > any sandwich pick the Indians could have gotten from Sabathia’s FA departure

So then there’s the argument that you get two pre-2nd round picks over 1 LaPorta… like any AAA washed up pitching prospect, per the Thornton Principle, Jackson could be an adjustment or two from being of use, and a new environment and new coaching staff may enable that adjustment. Plus, 20 years old actually sounds about right for an A baller, so I wouldn’t count Bryson out yet. Think of him as Andrew Barb before the retirement-inducing injury. The PTBNL later will likely be inconsequential, but I’ll still call that a relevant return for a pitcher on Sabathia’s level.

I’d be more concerned with the Brewers coughing up LaPorta and others for a rental, with no guarantee they’ll get over the hump with Sabathia or that they’ll resign him.

See, there's the difference between this deal and any Bedard deal

The alternative for Cleveland was draft picks. They didn’t give up any major pieces for Sabathia, so all you can look at for that trade is what they would’ve gotten had they decided not to trade him. With us, the comparison is going to be between what we would get for Bedard and what we gave up for Bedard. In this, even if we get a better deal than Cleveland did our trade will be more highly scrutinized than theirs.

by Last Fan Of Jose Lopez on Jul 7, 2008 1:06 PM PDT up reply actions

which is why this makes me happy

if just over a dozen Sabathia starts nets LaPorta, a Cha Baek type and an interesting low-A arm, then Bedard could bring in close to as much as he cost.

I doubt it

OTOH, I’m not of the opinion that we need to get what we gave up to move him.

The trade that netted Bedard is a matter of history. It should have no bearing on any discussion of what we should demand for him now.

The only factors that should determine whether we trade Bedard or not:

1) How much he is worth to this organization in the short term
2) How much he is worth to this organization in the medium term
3) How much he is worth to this organization through the life of his contract
4) How much can we get for him

I want the FO to make decisions about Bedard using nothing but logic and reason. Letting angst about what we gave up for him enter into the decision could potentially make things worse, not better.

If the PTBNL is Taylor Green

it’s not inconsequential. Here are his stats, and this is why it’s possible Green is the PTBNL.

Another rumor has the PTBNL as John Lucroy, a 22yo catcher. Again, if true, then the PTBNL is more important (arguably) than even Jackson.

It’s a quibble, but Bryson is younger and has less pro exp. at the time of trade than Barb did. Barb’s first run in the Sally league was better, but he was a bit older and wasn’t bumped between the rotation and pen like Bryson seems to be. I’d say the Brewers did a bit better, but I guess that’s not a shock when you’re dealing the reigning AL Cy Young winner.

by marc w on Jul 7, 2008 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

just stopping by from Let’s Go Tribe....and yes, the PTBNL is significant. Shapiro made it clear that the PTBNL was the second most important player in the deal (obviously not the caliber of Laporta, but viewed as a potential everyday player) and that the deal wouldn’t have gone down without him. Most speculation suggests the list of potential guys is just Taylor Green and Michael Brantley, both pretty decent.

by APV on Jul 7, 2008 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Michael Brantley

is a great contact hitter, but again, I’m made to feel old because I remember cheering on his dad when he played for the M’s… the legendary ‘CF before Griffey’ who was never heard from again.

I hadn’t heard the Brantley rumors; where did you hear that one? Which would you prefer?
