7/5 Minor League Wrap-Up

Thanks to Smith Tavern for letting me stick around after breakfast on LL Softball days long enough to get these written.

Good stuff today.  One of our day one 2008 draft picks is looking really, really good so far.  On to the wrap-up!

Star-divide

VENEZUELA~!  VSL Mariners 7, VSL Astros 4
VSLMs:  27-17... VSL Astros:  22-22
(League:  257/341/351... 3.60 ERA)

Leonardo Rodriguez:  6 IP, 2 H, 2 walks, 4 K, hit batter (8 GS +1, 1.55 ERA, 40.2 IP, 16/30 BB/K)
Kervin Montbrum:  2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 walks (12 app, 5.01 ERA, 23.1 IP, 19/20 BB/K)
Oberth Guanire:  1 IP (6 app, 4.50 ERA, 10 IP, 6/9 BB/K)
Carlos Ramirez:  4-4, 3 R (312/393/390)
Jetsy Extrano:  2-3, double, 2 R, RBI, walk (250/338/364)
Mario Yepez:  3-4, 3 RBI (346/407/465)
Cesar Del Rio:  1-4, solo HR, K (268/333/386)

The VSLMs built a 5-0 lead and padded it to 7-2 after the Astros scored 2 runs in the 7th.  The Astros had a token 9th inning rally before taking a seat.

Dominican:  DSL Mariners 14, DSL AthleticsUno 4
DSLMs:  20-8... DSLA1s:  12-7
(League:  233/337/319... 3.70 ERA)

Henry Perez:  4 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 walks, 6 K, wild pitch (4 GS +2, 2.13 ERA, 25.1 IP, 10/33 BB/K)
Anthony Fernandez:  1 IP, 3 walks, 2 K, wild pitch (5 GS +3, 4.08 ERA, 28.2 IP, 15/23 BB/K)
Nelson Germocen:  2 IP, 3 K (11 app, 1.50 ERA, 18 IP, 9/30 BB/K)
Julio Antigua:  1 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 4 walks, K
Cristian Rijo:  1 IP, K
Marbin Beltre:  2-4, 2 R, SB (271/409/300)
Angel Zapata:  2-5, 2 R, RBI (221/289/233)
Mario Flores:  2 run HR (311/449/475)
Hector Mercedes:  2-4, 2 run HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, walk (288/402/485)
Ameilis Carvajal:  0-4, R, sac fly RBI, some other RBI (220/395/356)
Axel Wel:  3-5 (245/323/264)
Efrain Nuñez:  1-4, double, R, K (294/407/588)

This game was in doubt until the DSLMs blew up the A1s bullpen for 5 runs in the 5th and 5 more in the 6th.  The DSLMs are just a cut above all the other teams in their division.

Rk-AZL:  Padres 8, Mariners 3
AZLMs:  5-7... AZL Hated Rivals:  6-5
(League:  267/349/390... 4.77 ERA)

Ryan Rehabbing Feierabend:  two outs, 1 H, 2 ER
Ariel Alcantara:  4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER (2 HR), 4 walks, 3 K
Nick Love:  3 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, K
Cesar Fuentes:  3-5
Alfredo Mateo:  2-5, double, R, RBI
Joel Mendez:  2-4, double, R, RBI

You'll have to consult more informed sources on why Feierabend was out or what was injured.  I'll look around when I get a spare moment, which should come sometime in November.

Rk+:  Pulaski's game with Princeton was postponed, and they'll try to play a doubleheader tonight.

A-:  Everett 6, Yakima 2

EVE:  8-11... YAK:  8-11
(League:  250/339/354... 3.95 ERA)

Bobby LaFromboise:  5 IP, 3 H, (2 R) 1 ER (HR), 5 K
Eddy Fernandez:  1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 K
Michael Renfree:  2.1 IP, 2 H, 4 K, wild pitch (7 app, 3.86 ERA, 14 IP, 1 HR, 5/15 BB/K)
Kevin Reynolds:  2-5, double, K, SB (403/437/522)
Dennis Freaking Raben:  3-3, 2 doubles, 3 R, walk, SB (DAMN)
Travis Howell:  3-4, 3 doubles, 4 RBI, K (367/500/510)
Welington Dotel:  1-3, R, RBI, 2 K

Down 2-0, the Aquasox came charging back with runs in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th innings to take a comfortable lead.

Also... holy crap, Dennis Raben.  Someone still thinks he's in the NCAA Tournament.  I'm not complaining, and I'm sure the Aquasox aren't complaining either.

A:  Beloit 6, Wisconsin 5
WIS:  3-14... BEL:  11-6
(League:  250/321/369... 3.61 ERA)

Keith Renaud:  5 IP, 5 H, 3 walks, 4 K
Joe Kantakevich:  1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER (HR), walk, K
Natividad Dilone:  no outs recorded, 2 H, 2 ER
Justin Souza:  2 IP, 2 H, 2 K (29 app, 3.55 ERA, 38 IP, 3 HR, 13/39 BB/K)
Robert Harmon:  1 IP, 1 H, walk, K, wild pitch (22 app, 6.75 ERA, 30.2 IP, 3 HR, 22/35 BB/K)
Gavin Dickey:  1-4, RBI, K (282/340/400)
Edilio Colina:  2-5, double, R (287/355/375)
Denny Almonte:  2-5, double, RBI, 2 K (274/326/469)
Juan Diaz:  1-2, double, R, walk, K (241/283/294)
Maximo Mendez:  3-4, double, RBI (252/336/370)

Keith Renaud's looking a lot better after getting demoted, as you'd expect, but his control remains an issue, and he'll need to resolve that in Appleton if the second time around at the next level is going to go any better.  Hopefully, the second time around in High A will be in Florida in 2009, and not High Desert.

As for his bullpen... well....

The Mavs were shut out for the second day in a row.

Take two of the Travis Mortimore As Starter experiment went just as badly as take one.

Seriously.

Him and Denny Almonte are the two most pleasant surprises in our system this year for me.

Almonte? Seriously?

He’s doing okay, but isn’t exactly blowing doors off buildings. The Mariners drafted him because of his tools and you had to figure his tools would eventually show up. At the very least, he’d start actually performing to his skill sets.

I’d have to give it Halman. While we knew he was an incredible athlete and a masher, his strikezone management is hideous and I don’t think it was expected he’d come out and obliterate AA pitching as well as he did the hitter friendly Cal League. It is a legitimate surprise someone who strikes out that much is doing so well.

Fans are typically idiots.

Let's hope he keeps it up, and finishes the year strong in AA.

He’ll also most likely need a full year in AA-AAA next year, if not more, to fully develop.
