7/4 Minor League Wrap-Up

The Man and injuries can't keep me down forever!

As for the Mariners org....

Uh... on to the wrap-up!

Star-divide

VENEZUELA~!  VSL Mariners 8, VSL Cardinals 3
VSLMs:  26-17... VSL Cards:  20-21
(League:  257/341/351... 3.60 ERA)

Erasmo Ramirez:  5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 4 K, wild pitch (8 GS +2, 3.68 ERA, 44 IP, 2 HR, 9/35 BB/K)
Mayckol Guaipe:  1 IP (13 app, 4.03 ERA, 24 IP, 1 HR, 12/17 BB/K)
Yoervis Medina:  3 IP, 1 H, walk, 7 K (11 app, 2.03 ERA, 26.2 IP, 1 HR, 5/22 BB/K)
Rafael Torrealba:  3-4, 2 R, RBI, K (218/295/291)

Michael Acevedo:  pinch RBI single, walk (252/339/350)

VSL Cards bullpen got crushed.

Dominican:  The DSLMs took July 4th off.

Rk-AZL:  Mariners 2, Rangers 1, 10 innings

AZLMs:  5-6... AZL Rangers:  7-4
(League:  267/349/390... 4.77 ERA)

Kenta Suda:  5 IP, 6 H, 4 K
Coln Buckborough:  4 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, walk, 5 K, wild pitch, hit batter
Kyle Brown:  1 IP, 1 H
Cesar Fuentes:  2-4, RBI, K
Jharmidy De Jesus:  2-4, RBI
Terry Serrano:  2-4, K

Down 1-0 in the bottom 9th, Jarrett Burgess led off with a single, Cesar Fuentes bunted him to 2nd for one out, and Jharmidy De Jesus smoked a grounder into left to cash him in and TIE THE BALLGAME.

Since the formula worked so well in the 9th, they repeated it in the bottom 10th.  Donnie Jobe led off with a single, Jarrett Burgess bunted him over to 2nd for one out, and Cesar Fuentes smoked a grounder into right to cash in Jobe for the WALKOFF VICTORY.

Rk+:  Pulaski 14, Princeton 3

PMs:  8-8... PRI:  8-9
(League:  264/339/397... 4.50 ERA)

Nick Czyz:  6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 walks, 5 K (5 app, 1 GS, 15.1 IP, 5/16 BB/K)
Tommy Johannesen-Ellis:  1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER (HR), K, hit batter

Brandon Pullen:  1.1 IP, 2 H, 4 K
Deybis Benitez:  4-5, double, 2 R
Mario Martinez:  3-4, 3 doubles, R, walk (333/357/530)
Juan Fuentes:  2-5, double, solo HR, 3 R, 3 RBI
Jose Rivero:  2-5, solo HR, 2 R (300/386/450)
Kalian Sams:  2-4, 3 run HR, solo HR, K (226/328/547)
Kris Sanchez:  4-4, 2 doubles, 3 run HR, 2 R, walk (370/442/652)
Jonathan Arias:  2-5, 2 run HR, 2 K

You know why this was so easy?  No Burt Reynolds in the P-Rays lineup!

Fun fact:  Stroker Ace's birthplace?

San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. Those wacky Dominicans.  Adrian Beltre is the tip of the iceberg.

A-:  Everett 7, Yakima 1
EVE:  7-11... YAK:  8-10
(League:  250/339/354... 3.95 ERA)

Aaron Brown:  4 IP, 1 H, 2 walks, 3 K (1st start, 1.93 ERA, 14 IP, 9/13 BB/K)
Christian Staehely:  3.2 IP, 4 H, (1 R) 0 ER, walk, K (5 app, 2.45 ERA, 11 IP, 10/8 BB/K)
Javier Martinez:  1.1 IP, K
Kevin Reynolds:  2-4, double, R (403/439/516)
Nate Tenbrink:  1-3, 2 run HR, K (206/300/338)
Manny Pimentel:  1-4, double, K (155/300/241)
DENNIS FREAKING RABEN:  3-4, solo HR, 3 R
Travis Howell:  3-4, double, R (333/483/422)
Brandon Fromm:  2-3, RBI, K
Ryan Royster:  1-4, double, R (157/279/196)

Aside from Yakima asses getting kicked, our 2nd round pick from this draft FINALLY signing, making his pro debut and looking good, and reliever Aaron Brown getting the start and looking surprisingly effective... not much to report here.

A:  Peoria 9, Wisconsin 7
WIS:  3-13... PEO:  11-5
(League:  250/321/369... 3.61 ERA)

Edward Paredes:  1 IP, 6 H, (4 R) 3 ER (HR), walk, hit batter (16 GS +1, 4.91 ERA, 73.1 IP, 9 HR, 33/50 BB/K)
Ryan Moorer:  3 IP, 3 H, 1 ER (HR), K (26 app, 4.22 ERA, 32 IP, 2 HR, 12/21 BB/K)
Natividad Dilone:  1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER (HR), 3 K
Keith Meyer:  2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 walks, K, hit batter (25 app, 3.63 ERA, 34.2 IP, 4 HR, 19/36 BB/K)
Jose Escalona:  2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER (HR), walk, 2 K (18 app, 5.24 ERA, 22.1 IP, 4 HR, 14/27 BB/K)
Edilio Colina:  3-5, 2 run HR, 2 R (285/355/371)
Denny Almonte:  2-4, 2 doubles, 2 R, walk, K (271/324/465)
Alex Liddi:  1-4, R, RBI, walk (246/312/348)
Joe Dunigan:  2-5, double, solo HR, 3 RBI, K (196/260/340)

Edward Paredes got ripped up and chased before he could record an out in the 2nd inning.  The T-Rats got 3 of those runs back in the 3rd, but Peoria piled on with runs in the 4th and 5th.  Yet, the T-Rats piled on 3 more in the 5th with home runs from Edilio Colina and Joe Dunigan that tied the ballgame in the 5th.  But the Chiefs scored 2 runs in the 6th on Jovan Rosa's 26th double, and Luis Batista's 8th HR of the season in the 9th made it 9-6 Peoria.  The T-Rats turned a leadoff double from Denny Almonte into a cheap run, but couldn't get anything else across.

A+:  Inland Empire 7, High Desert 0

Mavs:  8-7... Empire:  9-6
(League:  270/340/404... 4.51 ERA)

Ricky Orta:  3.1 IP, 4 H, (4 R) 3 ER (HR), 3 walks, 4 K (9 GS +3, 4.31 ERA, 39.2 IP, 5 HR, 14/35 BB/K)
Julio Santiago:  3.2 IP, 2 H, K (26 app, 4.58 ERA, 39.1 IP, 1 HR, 25/32 BB/K)
Austin Bibens-Dirkx:  1 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 walks, K, wild pitch, hit batter (29 app, 8.36 ERA, 37.2 IP, 9 HR, 14/27 BB/K)
Chris Minaker:  1-3, double (294/328/453)
rest of Mavs lineup:  5-29, 9 K

Since the run column's blank, I'm going to leave any analysis of this game blank.  It's only appropriate.

AA:  Montgomery 11, West Tenn 3
WTN:  6-11... MON:  6-11
(League:  262/341/395... 4.18 ERA)

Doug FISTER:  5 IP, 11 H, (10 R) 9 ER, 5 K, 2 hit batters (18 GS, 5.06 ERA, 99.2 IP, 9 HR, 35/73 BB/K)
Nelson Payano:  2 IP, 1 H, 4 walks, 2 K, wild pitch (31 app, 3.68 ERA, 51.1 IP, 1 HR, 30/48 BB/K)
Nick Hill:  1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER
Marwin Vega:  1 IP, 2 H, K, hit batter (29 app, 5.24 ERA, 44.2 IP, 3 HR, 32/28 BB/K)
Erick Monzon:  1-2, 2 RBI
Greg Halman:  3-5, 2 doubles, triple, R, K (310/365/621)
Mike Wilson:  1-5, double, RBI (271/365/562)
Adam Moore:  1-3, double (305/379/477)
Jon Nelson:  2-4, K (296/342/458)
Matt Mangini:  2-4, R (237/267/268)

The Biscuits blew up THE FIST in the 1st for 5 runs, had a 6-0 lead after 2, and piled on 4 runs in the 6th to chase FISTER and put the game completely out of reach.

AAA:  Portland 8, Tacoma 3

TAC:  44-44... POR:  45-41
(League:  274/346/437... 4.74 ERA)

Joe Woerman:  6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER (HR), 4 walks, K, hit batter (12 GS +5, 6.34 ERA, 65.1 IP, 6 HR, 56/44 BB/K)
Jake Woods:  1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, walk, K (26 app, 4.66 ERA, 46.1 IP, 6 HR, 18/37 BB/K)
Tracy Thorpe:  one out, 1 H, 5 ER (HR), 4 walks, K (14 app, 9.82 ERA, 14.2 IP, 5 HR, 11/18 BB/K)
Jon Huber:  one out, 2 H, 1 ER, K (31 app, 5.90 ERA, 39.2 IP, 1 HR, 13/29 BB/K)
Tug Hulett:  2-4, solo HR, solo HR, walk (289/366/488)
Victor Diaz:  1-4, double, R, K (286/367/492)
Prentice Redman:  2-4 (316/371/561)
Charlton Jimerson:  1-4, RBI, K, SB #12 (242/256/453... 2 walks, 74 K in 190 AB)

Joe Woerman managed to string together 6 solid innings by being his usual flyball-and-walk-prone self... but with a man on and one out in the 8th, Tracy Thorpe let this game get away faster than his body mass index, going walk, walk, walk (which forced in a run), GRAND SLAM (okay, he mixed in a strikeout, but still) to turn a 3-1 Rainiers lead into a 6-3 deficit, and he walked another batter before Jon Huber came in, allowed a single and a 2 run double to make it 8-3.

Tacoma OF watch:  WLAD in left, Jimerson in center and Prentice Redman in right, with Victor Diaz at DH.

Do you know why Efrain Nunez hasn't played in like a week?

And why was Gabriel Noriega moved from Peoria to Pulaski? I thought it might have been to give DeJesus a shot at shortstop, but he’s still playing third, so what’s the deal?

He might have just strained something or something similarly minor

It’s tough to get info, though, since the Dominican is relatively disconnected from the M’s pipeline.

He did play July 3rd, though, and went 0-3 with a walk and 2 K.

Dennis F! Raben

I was at the AquaSox game last night, and witnessed Dennis Raben’s pro ball debut. Been going to AquaSox games for many, many years, and in that time I’ve seen two players who screamed out “major league” in their play. (Adam Jones and Felix Hernandez. A certain catcher now trying to prove himself with the Mariner’s looked absolutely lost at the plate in his Everett debut, by the way.) I just saw the third. Raben’s the real deal.

Went 3 for 4, with a solid homer in his first pro at-bat. No nerves, absolutely unintimidated. Scored three runs, including taking home on a passed ball (no big deal, but his head was in the game). Most impressive was his confidence at the plate. (Just the opposite of how Jeff Clement looked.) Some really good catches in right field, with an almost too-strong throw in on one of them. This guy looks like a 4.5 tool player with a head far older than that of his peers. Congrats to Team Bavasi for drafting him. Heh.

My only regret is I may not get to see him play again for a while. I wasn’t planning a return trip until July 16, and by then Raben will probably have been packed off to Wisconsin. Based on this tiniest of samples, Short-Season Single A isn’t going to challenge him very much.

Thanks, man!

Yeah, I’d like to see over the course of the short season how he does before hitting the gas on the bandwagon, but it’s cool to hear that he came out playing with confidence.

One thing on his side is that he JUST got finished playing in the postseason with Miami-Fla (which I believe was why there was a delay in his signing), so instead of needing to work off rust after a layoff, he was able to walk right from having played several days a week against ~A ball level competition into professional short season A ball.

And FWIW

The M’s do generally take it slow with higher draft picks, keeping them in SS ball for the year. Once the next year comes up, they’ll fast track them if they wish, but in that first post-draft period, they usually will let the top picks get their feet wet in a low-risk environment, to protect their investment.

Re FWIW

If I recall, Jeff Clement was only with the Frogs a few weeks, and Adam Jones was moved up well before the season was over. I really hope we get to watch Raben in Everett for a while (he also seemed to really be picking up his teammates too, but the sample size is waaayyy to small to put that in my first post), but I was basing my prediction on what’s happened in the past to players who shine so brightly.

Thanks for the comment on the college post-season; I was unaware of it.

As I write this, he lead off the 2nd inning tonight with a single. He’s now 4 for 5 since signing.

Any idea what his signing bonus was? Couldn’t find any reports, and we have a little pool going . . .

Well, maybe baseball age

Jones started his age 20 season in the PCL. Halman started his in high A, though obviously he’s in AA now. Nice to see that SLG by Halman now, though…
