The Off-Topic FanPost of the '08 Season's Only On-Topic Day

Today represents the only meaningful day on the Mariners 2008 calendar (besides all the ones that have FELIX!!!!!! on them). Today is the day that Jarrod Washburn may go away. Today is the day that Raul Ibanez may take his pride of defense to another (hopefully stupid team). Today is the day that someone will overpay for a 37-year old left handed specialist because hell, one time he got into a fight with Omar Vizquel.

History, however, suggests otherwise. It suggests something along the lines of Jose Cruz Jr, Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek for three decent to terrible relief pitchers. It suggests something along the lines of Randy Johnson for three completely unknown prospects (though to be fair that one turned out pretty well for us, but hell, I was thirteen).

Hell, maybe Lee will go crazy and the M's will be buyers at the deadline. I heard that Will Ohman is available!

To summarize - I predict that Jarrod Washburn is not going away. I predict that Raul Ibanez will accept arbitration. And I predict that Arthur Rhodes will be traded for two cordless optical mice, a case of gum and a night at the strip club, courtesy of Theo Epstein.

In case you're wondering about the hour of this post, I already saw NOLA post at like 4:30 AM, so here's something more off-topic

I can't help but like the Saints - especially after Katrina,

but goddamnit, I’m a staunch Seahawks fan. My wife is a Panthers fan. She comes by it honestly, as she’s from South Carolina.

Oh, and NOLA, I live grits too. And collard greens. And okra.

Reggie Bush: Most Overrated Player Ever?

The way I see it. . .

Deuce is looking good so far in camp, but I am confident enough in Pierre to take his place if he canot get back to full speed. Reggie’s injury wasn’t very bad and he going full speed right now. Look for Shockey to turn Reggie out of the backfield into a heartbreaking set up.

by thewyrm on Jul 31, 2008 8:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Things NO has going for it:

Excellent pass blocking Offensive Line who allowed the fewest sacks in the league. The best QB in the NFC. A bonafide #1 WR in Marques Colston. A proven dual back combo or Deuce and Reggie. A TE who is not only the best blocking tight end in the game, but great in the recieving game as well who will force opposing LB’s to leave the middle of the field open for either Reggie out of the backfield or our slot reciever.

by thewyrm on Jul 31, 2008 8:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And an improved D with Vilma.

Yeah, you guys could be really good this year.

I’m thinking it’s gonna be between Dallas and NO for the NFC championship, although who the hell knows. Dallas is clearly the best in the East (yes I know the Gmen won, but 4 great games in a row doesn’t make you awesome the next year), NO is clearly the class of the South, but after that it gets murky. The North is a giant clusterfuck because of Favre. The West is between St Louis and Seattle, and the Cardinals could come out of nowehere. NO and Dallas are the only teams in the NFC you can point to now and definitively say that they are great.

Goddamn I cannot wait for football

Speaking of mediocrity....

Every year, I hear “this is the year that Spurs challenge the Big Four” and every year, I look at the standings and the Big Four are apparently Wigan, Sunderland, Bolton, and Fulham. I hope they do get up to the top side of the table (I miss a derby that means something), but I have my doubts.

What did you win last year?

At least we got a trophy.
Seriously, I’d be pissed off right now if I was an Arsenal fan – other teams improving, and Arse trying desperately to field a team of 17 yo trainees and ‘project’ signings. All the while, the Emirates debt piles up.

by marc w on Jul 31, 2008 9:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Arsenal won nothing last year

and they’ll probably win nothing this year. And those 17 yo trainees and project signings don’t seem to be harming the fortunes of the club too much – they’re consistently a top four team, and will continue to be so in the future (or until Wenger and his eye for talent leaves).

Debt from the Emirates is manageable, and the Arsenal board has never once said Wenger cannot get whatever money he needs to make signings; Arsenal are not hurting for cash, and their consistent Champions League appearances ensure that will be the case for a while. They just see no need to spend that cash on a big name, when the same talent can be had for far less from the younger ranks. And why not? It’s worked out pretty well so far.

Am I frustrated that Arsenal hasn’t won anything in the last few years? Sure. But does that mean I think Arsenal should go spend £bazillions on a “big name”? Nope. I trust Wenger, he’s looking to build a team that will be competitive every single season, and he’s done that.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

No.

I’m still waiting on Billy Beane’s Tottenham fandom/consulting to pay off for Spurs.

Arsenal are an extremely rich club; they’re nothing like the A’s.

by marc w on Jul 31, 2008 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're more like Logan's Run than the A's

Wenger’s a big believer in age of players. Once a player crosses about 32 he will no longer get more than a one-year contract; Wenger is definitely in the “youngblood” camp rather than the “hire a big name” camp. It’s worked out well so far.

This is sort of a random roster-building question, but:

Is it more important to have an outfielder with a really strong arm (Ichiro-class) in LF or RF. My initial thought is that RF would be more important, since the ball has further to go to get to 3B to prevent triples/advancing from 1st to 3rd.

I can understand noise complaints, since they're so loud you can't really escape it

But the traffic complaints are dumb for exactly the reasons you stated. There are similar complaints about the mayor’s proposal to shut down streets around Alki for a few hours one Sunday to create a community walk zone. It’s a one time thing for a FEW HOURS. PLAN AROUND IT. IT WILL PASS.

by Gomez on Jul 31, 2008 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't even get noise complaints.

It’s not like they sneak into town unnoticed and break the sound barrier over Madison Park or anything. It’s well-publicized that they’re coming. If they practiced for eight hours a day for a week, I’d be more sympathetic, but it’s such a short period of time every day, I fail to see what all the fuss is about. If it bothers people that much, they should plan vacations around when the Blue Angels are in town.

I've been looking since this came up yesterday,

and I’m convinced that it doesn’t exist. I work for a company that resells electronics, and our merchandising people can’t even find anything that has NTSC and HDMI in a player, and we cover all brands but LG/Phillips.

If you upgrade to a recorder (about 100$ more for new models) you can get it. I’m not going to guarantee that it’ll pass through & upconvert real-time, though.

Toshiba has a few recorders, the cheapest 1080P being the D-R550. You can get 1080i from the D-R5.

The DR5 would be a great deal, if you can find one on clearance right now (about 80$ new). It was discontinued over a year ago, so used ones should be available on the cheap. Otherwise, expect to pay 120+ for the D-R550.

You can find similar things offered from each major brand, I just used Toshiba because I get the best deal on them (which isn’t enough of a drop with the shipping for it to be worthwhile for you to get it from me).

Good luck, dude.

I'm starting to think you're right.

I can only seem to find this kind of setup in a DVD recorder and let’s be honest, what the fuck do I need a DVD recorder for?

I’m probably just going to cave and build a new machine to run MythTV.

by BrianL on Aug 1, 2008 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This'll probably lower your opinion of me,

but I would recommend getting a Mac Mini (Intel one). They have the IR built in, Wifi, Bluetooth, and there are enough people that do it to find decent Front Row replacements/ plugins. You lose the MythTV interface, but you can just add EyeTV and the Front Row plugin, and you’re good to go.

I have one myself, outputting DVI -> HDMI on my TV. You shouldn’t even have to mess with resolution, since you are using a monitor (IIRC).

I’d give you my setup, but I still haven’t decided which frontend I’m going to use yet since the new front row came out, and I’m still playing.
