7/31 Rumour Mill: Griffey----->White Sox, Bay---->RED SOX, Manny---->DODGERS
I figured we should save the front-page post for Mariner trades/non-trades. If not, then ignore this.
Griffey has apparently been picked up by the White Sox. Take it away, Ken.
The Reds have traded Griffey to the White Sox, pending his approval. Griffey will decide Thursday morning whether he will approve the deal, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. It is not known what the Reds would receive in return.
It's a questionable move for the Sox, as I don't really see a fit there and he sucks, but I see no reason why he'd veto the trade.
EDIT: AHAHAHAHAHAHA
The White Sox, leading the American League Central by a game and a half, would use Griffey mostly in the outfield, the source said. ...The Sox are set at the corners with Carlos Quentin in left and Jermaine Dye in right. They could play Nick Swisher at first to open center for Griffey, a move that would reduce the playing time of first baseman Paul Konerko
Well, Detroit and Minnesota, here's your opportunity. Seriously how dumb can a first-place team be? Griffey in CF???
The [FALL DOWN STAIRS] of a trade involving Manny, Bay, and the Marlins has not been agreed upon yet. Miami Herald:
But a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press early Thursday there was no tentative agreement. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because talks were ongoing, with the trade deadline looming Thursday afternoon.
Hopefully the Marlins are coming to their senses. If not, the Sox are getting quite a steal.
The Rays are targeting Adam Dunn if Bay is dealt to someone else. Stark:
The Reds and Rays talked Wednesday night about a deal that would send Adam Dunn to Tampa Bay. According to a source with knowledge of the discussions, those talks haven't yet moved beyond the conversation stage. But that conversation is expected to resume Thursday morning.
This would be interesting. A good hitter who would be a huge improvement at DH and will likely net the Rays 2 picks at years end.
UPDATE (UPDATE): Rays have traded have not traded for Jason Bay. MLB.com was wrong
With the three-way deal between the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins falling through, an MLB.com source says that the Rays are going to acquire right-handed hitting outfielder Jason Bay for Minor League prospects including shortstop Reid Brignac and right-hander Jeff Niemann. The Rays have not confirmed the deal.
The Rays' pursuit of Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is off "unless a miracle happens," according to a source close to the negotiations.
FINAL UPDATE: Manny has been traded to the Dodger in a 3-way trade. ESPN
A baseball source has confirmed Ramirez has been traded to the Dodgers, ESPN.com has learned.
Jason Bay is going to Boston as part of the deal, SI.com reported. And the Pirates get four minor leaguers as part of the three-way deal.
Yes I know it's early but I live on the East Coast and we all know about the trade deadline.

Maybe all this rampant Manny media speculation is actually an attempt to get the Rays to overpay for Bay

I can totally see why the Sox and Pirates would want to do the deal.
It makes both their teams better for now and in the future.
I think it’s just a case of the Marlins being goddamned idiots

But the Marlins being involved at all means it makes zero sense
Why wouldn’t they just trade those prospects for Bay and not even involve Boston? Bay is a better option anyways, Manny in a normal outfield would be an unmitigated disaster and everyone knows it, even casual fans know this.

I guess what I'm saying is
I’ll believe it’s happening when Manny is on a plane to Florida. If a rumor sounds too stupid to be true it usually is.

Manny's fame >>>>>> Jason Bay's fame
Jason Bay is from Canada for crying out loud. No one ever said what MLB FO’s did had to make sense anyway.

Mets are unlikely to complete a deal.
Says Newsday:
Team officials were skeptical, however, on completing a deal for either one before today’s 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline. One person familiar with the situation flatly stated the Mets would not deal any of their top prospects – Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz or Bobby Parnell – for what they considered to be a two-month rental.
Who puts 4 prospects on an untouchable list? So I guess Raul won’t be a Met.

Is there a reason
Everyone is so sure Raul wont accept arbirtration, ala Guillen? Im really asking, because im not as confident…
And goody, we could use 2 more relievers!
by Slica on Jul 31, 2008 7:08 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Best case scenario:
Raul leaves to sign with the 16th best team after declining arb. Fields doesn’t sign. Mariners come in last.
We would have #1, #16, #20a (21), and then a supp pick.
Talk about some awesomesauce.

Apparently the Manny trade odds are now less than 50-50
a baseball source with direct knowledge of the talks said that the chances of a deal getting done were "less than 50-50.’’
...
Indications remain that some key members of the Sox’ upper management remain unconvinced that the team should deal Ramirez, who has made it clear he would like to be dealt. Baseball sources continued to indicate last night the Sox are reluctant to make such a deal because the club deems the cost too high.
Boston wants to back out?? Ramirez and cash for Bay would be a fantastic deal for them.

They're mostly winning because Detroit and Cleveland both shit the bed
It would take a huge stretch of the imagination to think Griffey can still play CF or OPS above .800 ever again, so I don’t see how this makes them anything but worse.

Have their results so far been legit?
Having Griffey in Center should make all of their pitching look a hell of a lot worse, anyways.

Their OPS+ is 106
their ERA+ is 116. very good pitching D combined with decent offense.
Even if the Indians and Tigers had performed to expectations, the WS would still be a good team.

but I’ll happily admit that seldom do I bother really analyzing the White Sox.

Yeah,
I thought they didn’t make sense because I didn’t see the Sox as having a legit postseason chance in 2008, but from a straight value standpoint they were okay moves.

On this board, or elsewhere?
Pretty much every stat analyst / blogger all over the web was panning their trades, FA signings, and retaining of their own players, predicting that KW wasn’t long for the job, and projecting the WS to finish last.

The most baffling rumor I've ever seen:
Posted by Jayson Stark
Here’s one of the most surprising names to pop up on the “available” list in the past 24 hours—Kyle Lohse. Officials of two teams that spoke with the Cardinals report that they’ve been offering to deal Lohse if they can get back the right package. The Cardinals have been looking for both a bat and a bullpen arm. And apparently, they concluded they didn’t have the prospects to get both. They got Chris Carpenter back from the disabled list Wednesday, with Adam Wainwright a couple of weeks behind. And they have no assurance they can re-sign Lohse because he’s a Scott Boras client.
So Lohse could dramatically alter the starting-pitching market Thursday if the Cardinals can find the right taker. Among the teams still looking for a starter: White Sox, Rockies and Yankees.
Surrendering when you’re a half game out make a shitton of sense.
by JI on Jul 31, 2008 9:25 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
So we could have had Kyle Lohse or Carlos Silva, and we got Silva
yessssssssss

Manny trade getting more serious
according to Rosenthal. There are some interesting concessions made too.
Marlins agree not to pick up the club options allowing Manny to be a free agent at the end of the year.
Manny agree’s not to accept arbitration so the Marlins can get the draft picks for him when he signs elsewhere.
The Red Sox would pay almost all of the 7mil Manny is still owed this year.

JI’s comment of “I tried to go the whole season without bringing this up” keeps refreshing as a new comment, and Jed MC’s comment “And then Gammons posts that it is close to dead” is constantly yellow, yet when I hit ‘z’ it doesn’t go away.
