Lee Is Either A Genius Or A Moron

In fewer than 26 hours, we'll have a better idea which.

The Mariners still must think they can acquire a haul for lefty starter Jarrod Washburn. They just asked one National League team for two of its top prospects for a pitcher most teams think should have been traded to the Yankees by now. New York long ago offered to take Washburn and pay the rest of the $14 million left on his $37-million, four-year contract while sending Seattle a decent prospect. Instead, the Mariners have been trying for a home run. They want a top prospect back from the Yankees and for New York to pay Washburn's entire contract.

Mess this up and I will show you no mercy.

No

He is an interim GM desperate to impress his bosses before the upcoming interviews.

I’ll bet he doesn’t get traded before the deadline and then we try and get him through waivers.

Phone rings

NL GM: Hello

Lee P: Hi, this is Lee P. with the Mariners. Are you interested in Jarrod Washburn?

NL GM: Well, we could be.

Lee P: How about Washburn and $4M for two of your top prospects?

(pause)

NL GM: Are you fucking crazy?

Lee P: No.

(pause)

Lee P: Well, what if I decreased my asking price by 50%?

NL GM: So, you’re saying I get a half-off sale? Okay. That works. I’ll fax you the papers now.

Lee P: Thank you, sir. Pleasure doing business.

NL GM: (faxes papers) ... (pause) ... Wait, dammit!

If Lee gets both top prospects and salary relief

I will…. speak highly of him on this website.

So far, so good. You’ve gotta know when to compromise, but so far, he’s doing the right thing.

They had a post from Dex (one of the mods)

talking about how they needed to stop rooting for Strasburg (ie, losses). They do not deserve the awesomeness that is SAS.

Also seriously someone kidnap Selig and force the Yanks/Angels/Red Sox to trade A-Rod, Joba, Lackey, Tex, Manny, Ortiz, and Beckett to the Nationals.

I won't root for our losses but I'll root for those other two teams to win

I’m thinking about bringing a sign to Petco that says “Win this for the Mariners”

I root for people who might be useful in the future to do well.

I do not care about the results of the games at all, unless Felix can get a win or we’re playing the Angels/Red Sox.

Strasburg creates a win/win situation IMO

If the M’s win, then hooray, M’s win.
If the M’s lose, we’re one step closer to Strasburg.

The Mets

I’ve seen rumors tying the Mets to Arthur Rhodes, Raul Ibanez, and now Jarrod Washburn… As Buster Olney says:

The Mets’ priorities as they near the deadline are No. 1, a reliever; No. 2, a corner outfielder; and No. 3, an experienced starting pitcher.

Hey, why we have one of each and they are all up on the trading block… would be fun to see a giant firesale going to the Mets.

by manyoso on Jul 30, 2008 11:54 AM PDT   0 recs

Who do we take back in return though?

I thought the Mets cupboard was pretty bare.

We don't need much to make it worthwhile.

Really, we can only expect value for Ibanez. The Mets have that much.

FanShots are underrated.

by acblue on Jul 30, 2008 12:09 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I would

expect some value out of Rhodes actually. There just aren’t that many experienced LHP relievers out there for the taking. Teams overpay for these “specialists” every single year.

by AZSEAfan on Jul 30, 2008 12:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, some.

But not a ton. The top of the Mets farm system is pretty bare, but they’re sure to have several players that would be good return for Rhodes.

FanShots are underrated.

by acblue on Jul 30, 2008 12:28 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Lee, this is one the few times , where we don't care if we get anything good back in return.

Seriously, you could receive shit back in return, and we’d be fine.

Just get rid of him. Make him disappear. Just do it Lee. Do it now!

I’ve seen him kill 5 horses barehanded and then raise them from the dead.

Also Marshall once carried 13 guys into the end zone.

I don't see how we can mess this up..

Either we get something for him before the trade deadline or we get the salary dump after the deadline. Even the M’s can’t mess this up, right?

Sure we can. Lots of ways...

1. Say Yanks fill their needs another way and no one claims him off waivers.

2. Lee and company decide that Washburn turnaround is legit and keep him next year.

3. He injures himself OR more likely he regresses between now and when M’s try to push him threw waivers.

Lots of ways for M’s to screw this up.

Baker thinks genius, and he might be right

The folks at Newsday have also been all over this deal from the beginning. They call this a “dead’’ deal, but I don’t share that opinion. I agree with Harper above in that the Yankee spin-meisters only want folks to think it’s dead so that the M’s will cave and throw Washburn out there. But as we mentioned two days ago, and which the Newsday reporters do in their piece, the M’s are really under no pressure to get a cash-only deal done with the Yankees on Washburn. You can do that in August, since waivers won’t be an issue in a salary dump. Well, they could be an issue for the Yankees if a team steps up to claim Washburn, either out of interest or to block a trade.

But if it’s a salary-only deal anyway, the M’s can just let that claiming team take Washburn and all of his salary. What do they care? At most, they’d lose that third-rate, token prospect the Yanks are offering to throw in right now. No big deal. As we discussed, as long as the Yanks stick to their current position, the M’s are under no pressure to move Washburn by tomorrow. They can always call New York’s bluff and then, if they really are desperate to unload his salary, just make the move on Aug. 1. New York’s needs won’t change in one day. They aren’t going to walk away from the salary-only deal just because 24 hours have passed.

*Face Palm*

I just read this:

“Use Tug Hullet as the everyday SS.

I like the kid a lot, I’ve seen a few Rainiers games at Cheney and he strikes me as that Dustin Pedroia-esque scrappy sparkplug of a middle infielder. He shows a good glove (certainly better than what we’ve gotten from Yuni lately), better than average power for a SS, and enough speed to keep him out of trouble and swipe maybe 15-20 bags a year”

On USSM. This person can’t be serious.

The poster formerly known as Matt.

by bluemax on Jul 30, 2008 1:19 PM PDT   0 recs

I'm curious.

I wouldn’t say he’s good, even decent, but I’m not sure he’s that much worse than Yuni. Gomez called him a better-hitting Bloomquist; unfortunately this is better than Yuni.

He’s not a long term answer at all (I think he’d be a much better WFB as a utility guy) but he seems like he could be an improvement on Yuni.

On the other hand, Strasburg

Yep

Our current SS seems to be starring in a one-man show entitled ‘There Is No Floor.’ Tug would be an upgrade.

That says much more about the state of this franchise than it does about Hulett, but it’s still a factual statement.

by marc w on Jul 30, 2008 1:38 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Does Yuni have any options left, where we could send him down to get in shape?

And maybe find his glove and bat?

how can he know he’s any good?

by pdb on Jul 30, 2008 1:43 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It was kind of a dumb comment, to be sure.

That said, if Yuni goes away and we play Tug at SS for the rest of the year, I’m all kinds of okay with that.

FanShots are underrated.

Mets are backing off Ibanez.

Marlins are playing down Rhodes talk.

And Washburn is still a Mariner.

There is no floor.

ESPN is reporting that,

but they aren’t the most accurate source.

AKA "BRO-RAY" according to drunk Graham...

by Thingray on Jul 30, 2008 1:59 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

ESPN likes the Yankees/Red Sox given the markets

It’s in their best interests for the Yankees to get Washburn for nothing, so why not play up this sort of storyline in hopes the M’s will feel pressure and fold?
