Don't be too sure Bill Bavasi would know what to do with the #1 pick.

Last time he got it, he drafted Darin Erstad.

Since when am I here to HELP you? :-P

I have two jobs on this blog: putting down Bavasi, and being a retarded fanboy about Joe Saunders. HELP was negotiated off the contract for being too vague.

Bavasi could have done worse than Erstad.

While he wasn’t a tremendous player like all teams would like a #1 pick to be, Erstad was a solid contributor offensively for most of his career. And, if I remember correctly, he also played a pretty good outfield.

Take a look at the years before and after that 1995 draft. The #1 overall picks were Paul Wilson and Kris Benson. That would have been worse.

by schismatix on Jul 3, 2008 6:33 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

True enough.

But I objected to the Erstad decision because we picked a guy who was near major-league ready at a position WE DIDN’T NEED. Our OF was Tim Salmon, Jim Edmonds, and Garret Anderson. All in their early-mid 20s. We were fine in the outfield. Picking up quick to the majors outfielder with high skills but low tools using the number one pick made NO SENSE.

Also, Kris Benson looked like a great pick until the injury post-2000

He was never really the same after that.

I wanted them to lose so bad

I about threw up when they won. They must’ve seen the Dodgers score and decided to keep it interesting.

why is Vidro still hitting 4th?

there are 4 players on the bench who are better DH’s

by MFAN on Jul 3, 2008 6:36 PM PDT   0 recs

Jose "Cetty" Vidro's 2008 OPS+ is...

A). 109
B). 69
C). 79
D). 62
E). Damn the costs man, for Strasburg!

What's Lester rate in tra and such?

Watching this game, he doesn’t look like he has anything, but he’s 8 into a 3 hit shutout.

by Faux on Jul 3, 2008 6:38 PM PDT   0 recs

Really?

I just don’t see it. it just looks like people should be hitting him a lot more, even in games like this.

by Faux on Jul 3, 2008 6:48 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I was about to ask who the hell that was.

The Tigers, for all their 1,000-run offensive prowess, have introduced two or three guys this year that I’ve never heard of.

by Teej on Jul 3, 2008 6:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Funny how the Tigers don't mind regularly playing nobodies

Mike Rabelo, Clete Thomas, Armando Galarraga, Mike Hollimon…

Athletics Nation

is probably number 1…

by bluemax on Jul 3, 2008 7:17 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Probably

I’ve hit up Sunday Morning QB, Conquest Chronicles, Field Gulls, Minor League Ball, and True Blue LA and none of them get LL level of content or posting.

D-Rays Bay might be the only one with the volume of traffic that I check regularly.

A's Nation gets a ton of traffic.

Yeah I just noted that

right above.

by bluemax on Jul 3, 2008 7:17 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Tons of traffic,

but I don’t think they have anything on our number of comments. A lot of that surely has to do with the fact that half our comments aren’t about baseball.

I'll most likely be up for that.

The earliest I could get there is probably 8:45-9 because of work, but we can close that bitch out at 11 like champs.

by Teej on Jul 3, 2008 8:23 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I will let you know

and even if I can’t go, you should go anyway, because, hey, Toronado.

by Jeff on Jul 3, 2008 8:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Good thinking.

I’m almost considering heading over there tonight and having a beer or two. It might just turn me into a beer snob.

BevMo is the shit.

When I was 20, I had a girlfriend who worked there and got great discounts. That’s pretty much the best setup ever for an underage kid.

Even the checkout guys are awesome

The guy today shook my hand because he was amazed by the quality of my haul.

I sadly remember the days when I lived in Washington and didn't have access to a BevMo.

And no gin on Sundays! That sucked. I miss Washington, but California’s liquor laws make me complacent about ever moving back.

by Teej on Jul 3, 2008 8:41 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If you ever move back I will email you pictures of what I'm drinking

and the subject will be a smiley face and the word “motherfucker”

Liquor stores are open on Sundays now.

Still no booze at the Rite-Aid, though.

As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.

I don't care about this season, next season or Strasburg...

It’s the first time I’ve the chance to listen to a game in a dog’s age, I just want a win.

by John Morgan on Jul 3, 2008 7:14 PM PDT   0 recs

I might get tomatoed for saying this, but I always want a win.

As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.

by acblue on Jul 3, 2008 7:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm the same...

as a relatively new convert to the Mariners, and Baseball in general, I’m still doe-eyed enough to love any day-to-day winning more than a possible draft positioning

by pakipaki on Jul 3, 2008 7:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If I ever thought the M's were as bad as their record, I might feel differently.

I was just so sure that a regression was coming that I never saw them ending up with the worst record in the majors.

As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.

by acblue on Jul 3, 2008 7:21 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If contention mattered that much to me...

I wouldn’t have become a Mariners fan 20 years ago.

by John Morgan on Jul 3, 2008 7:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

At this point I am rooting for them to win Strasburg.
