Don't be too sure Bill Bavasi would know what to do with the #1 pick.

Last time he got it, he drafted Darin Erstad.

Since when am I here to HELP you? :-P

I have two jobs on this blog: putting down Bavasi, and being a retarded fanboy about Joe Saunders. HELP was negotiated off the contract for being too vague.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Jul 3, 2008 6:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Bavasi could have done worse than Erstad.

While he wasn’t a tremendous player like all teams would like a #1 pick to be, Erstad was a solid contributor offensively for most of his career. And, if I remember correctly, he also played a pretty good outfield.

Take a look at the years before and after that 1995 draft. The #1 overall picks were Paul Wilson and Kris Benson. That would have been worse.

by schismatix on Jul 3, 2008 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

True enough.

But I objected to the Erstad decision because we picked a guy who was near major-league ready at a position WE DIDN’T NEED. Our OF was Tim Salmon, Jim Edmonds, and Garret Anderson. All in their early-mid 20s. We were fine in the outfield. Picking up quick to the majors outfielder with high skills but low tools using the number one pick made NO SENSE.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Jul 3, 2008 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, Kris Benson looked like a great pick until the injury post-2000

He was never really the same after that.

She’s deathly afraid of clowns, and she didn’t talk to me for 2 weeks. This thing should not be thrown about haphazardly. It should be used on rare occasion and wisely.

I managed to accidentally corcobait the girl sitting in front of Matthew and I...

And for reasons unknown I was not the only recent CUED grad sitting in my section, which freaked me the hell out. Also, Red told me off for trying to steal Shannon with my accent.

And I kept getting texts from Robert via Matthew RE: my lesbianism.

Couple News Bits

-We signed our 2nd Rounder, Mr. Raben.

Also signed two International kids:

-Julio Morban, an advanced hitter who may be able to play CF.

-Jose Valdivia, RHP from Nicaragua. 6’3 and throws a low 90s fastball already.

Padres cleaned up. Yankees did well also.

by Slica on Jul 4, 2008 12:23 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, the Pads nabbed Adis Portillo, a 16-year-old pitcher from Venezuela.

Supposed to be one of the best young pitchers out there after Inoa. They gave him more money than they’ve given a draft pick in four years. Not that that’s saying much.

The M's are going to kick so much ass in 2012

Right before the Mayan Apocalypse is fulfilled and earth’s magnetic polls reverse, exposing us all to lethal doses of radiation. Just watch.

Captain Raptor and the Space Pirates is one of the greatest literary achievements of the Modern Era.

And earth's about to get its windshield wiper fluid replaced

What if Ichiro patrolled Safeco's outfield while riding a Utahraptor?

by Frosty Raptor on Jul 4, 2008 12:40 AM PDT up reply actions

No, it rolls over.

The Mayan calender. It’s done it many times before.

(I’m aware that you probably know this, but what if someone else doesn’t?)

Yea I don't believe that the end of the world is in 2012

I do think some sort of alignment with the stars might occur in 2012, which is why the chinese, the mayans, and nostradamus all predicted the end on the same date.
