Off-Topic FanPost of the Day, 7/29
I'd like to use the Off Topic FanPost of the Day to express that yes, while I think many of the regulars are the biggest culprits in going off topic, that we come here to talk about baseball first and foremost and are grateful for the work that the Triumvirate and Gomez put into the site.
It's definitely fun to have the random off-topic threads (especially at work), but I for one am glad that lately the more serious baseball posts have talked a lot about, well, baseball. I know it's a little different this week becuase for the first time all season, the Mariners are actually somewhat interesting, but it's a refreshing change of pace. Hopefully we can contain the off-topicness to a thread or two a day instead of a few of the free-for-alls that have been pretty common the last couple of months.
That being said, this is the Off-Topic FanPost of the Day for the day. Have at it!

I try to stay on topic in serious baseball posts
because I don’t want to see the work Jeff/Matthew/Graham et. al. do be trivialized. But over here in the off-topic world, it’s all beer, rock music, and whatever else.
I saw the Hold Steady this weekend and they were awesome as usual. It’s always refreshing to see a band that is obviously having a great time on stage, and Craig Finn always looks like a kid opening Christmas presents on stage – he’s always got this big goofy grin on his face, he’s jumping up and down and clapping a lot, and just generally having a blast. Oh, and the music’s good, as well – Stay Positive isn’t as good as Boys And Girls In America, but it’s still a pretty damn good record.
Oh, and beer.

"Stay Positive"
Is one of the best albums of the year.
I loved Lifter Puller, but the somewhat refined style of The Hold Steady is much more accessible. Finn is a great writer.

If I wanted a Niehaus bobblehead from the game on Sunday
but couldn’t go to the game, what would be the best way to get one? I really don’t want to ebay. I have an extra Beltre bobblehead I’d be willing to trade. Should I make a diary fanpost proposing a trade? Or would that be too OT/waste of space?

I'd love to sit down with Dave, share some gin, and talk baseball for an evening.
I would also love to have Morgan Freeman narrate my life.

Speaking of Morgan Freeman
was his character in the new Batman movies completely made up? I don’t remember Batman having his own Q. Then again, I only ever watched the 90s cartoon and the 60s live action.

I see no reason to blindly support a country.
I had major issues with how the USA basketball team was selected the past two tries and so rooted for them to fail.

I thought they did a horrible job of putting together a "team" in 04
It struck me as a random collection of players, ill-suited to the international game.

It probably was, but '04 was also the year that no one wanted to play for them because of the terrorism concerns
so they kind of had their hand forced by that

But they're not amateurs
I always thought the selectively/creatively applied definition of ‘amateur’ made a mockery of the whole thing.
Other countries can take pros if they’re paid ‘stipends’ and not ‘salaries’ – or you can take pros in soccer, but they have to be under 23. Except for those two guys over there, who are 30.
In baseball you can take pros, but they can’t be TOO pro.
Runners who win $1,000,000 in the WCs are still amateurs…how? Because they’re not paid a salary? Because they’re paid on commission? Ridiculous.

Wait you mean a team comprised almost
entirely of 6’7” ish wingmen who can’t shoot well, can’t play defense, and don’t pass the ball is ill-suited for the international game?

There's a history with supporting a baseball team.
There’s not a history with a team that is different every four years.

Not so much continuity as it is about having a yearly following for a team that you stick with through good and bad.

I don't mean to imply anything,
though I understand why it seems that way. I’m just trying to understand the distinction. If you don’t have a conscious distinction, that would be a fine answer. If the way you like the US is different than the way you like the US, that’s fine, too. It’s just curiosity, not baiting.
