Off-Topic FanPost of the Day, 7/29

I'd like to use the Off Topic FanPost of the Day to express that yes, while I think many of the regulars are the biggest culprits in going off topic, that we come here to talk about baseball first and foremost and are grateful for the work that the Triumvirate and Gomez put into the site.

It's definitely fun to have the random off-topic threads (especially at work), but I for one am glad that lately the more serious baseball posts have talked a lot about, well, baseball. I know it's a little different this week becuase for the first time all season, the Mariners are actually somewhat interesting, but it's a refreshing change of pace. Hopefully we can contain the off-topicness to a thread or two a day instead of a few of the free-for-alls that have been pretty common the last couple of months.

That being said, this is the Off-Topic FanPost of the Day for the day. Have at it!

Poll
Jose Vidro is the Mariners DH and bats fourth because
  • "with the first overall selection in the 2009 MLB Entry Draft, the Seattle Mariners select Stephen Strasburg, RHP, San Diego State University"
  • he has a good approach at the plate
  • Jim Riggleman doesn't look at the scoreboard often enough to realize he's hitting .226/.269/.326
  • he has incriminating pictures of Howard Lincoln and/or Chuck Armstrong
  • fuck you, that's why

I try to stay on topic in serious baseball posts

because I don’t want to see the work Jeff/Matthew/Graham et. al. do be trivialized. But over here in the off-topic world, it’s all beer, rock music, and whatever else.

I saw the Hold Steady this weekend and they were awesome as usual. It’s always refreshing to see a band that is obviously having a great time on stage, and Craig Finn always looks like a kid opening Christmas presents on stage – he’s always got this big goofy grin on his face, he’s jumping up and down and clapping a lot, and just generally having a blast. Oh, and the music’s good, as well – Stay Positive isn’t as good as Boys And Girls In America, but it’s still a pretty damn good record.

Oh, and beer.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

"Stay Positive"

Is one of the best albums of the year.

I loved Lifter Puller, but the somewhat refined style of The Hold Steady is much more accessible. Finn is a great writer.

If I wanted a Niehaus bobblehead from the game on Sunday

but couldn’t go to the game, what would be the best way to get one? I really don’t want to ebay. I have an extra Beltre bobblehead I’d be willing to trade. Should I make a diary fanpost proposing a trade? Or would that be too OT/waste of space?

A night hanging out with Dave talking about the M's >>>> Morgan Freeman narrating life

and Morgan Freeman narrating life would be pretty damn awesome

Speaking of Morgan Freeman

was his character in the new Batman movies completely made up? I don’t remember Batman having his own Q. Then again, I only ever watched the 90s cartoon and the 60s live action.

Rooting for Team USA

is a bit like rooting for the Yankees.

by johnbai on Jul 29, 2008 12:25 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I see no reason to blindly support a country.

I had major issues with how the USA basketball team was selected the past two tries and so rooted for them to fail.

I had no problem with the '04 team actually

and I really like this team

I thought they did a horrible job of putting together a "team" in 04

It struck me as a random collection of players, ill-suited to the international game.

by Matthew on Jul 29, 2008 11:11 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Let's send a bunch of college players instead.

Really, I’d love to see that happen.

by BrianL on Jul 29, 2008 11:12 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

This.

Olympics are supposed to be amateurs.

by Matthew on Jul 29, 2008 11:16 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The Olympics are just like the NCAA football/basketball.

Big $$ surrounding amateur athletes who “don’t” get paid for playing the games.

But they're not amateurs

I always thought the selectively/creatively applied definition of ‘amateur’ made a mockery of the whole thing.
Other countries can take pros if they’re paid ‘stipends’ and not ‘salaries’ – or you can take pros in soccer, but they have to be under 23. Except for those two guys over there, who are 30.
In baseball you can take pros, but they can’t be TOO pro.

Runners who win $1,000,000 in the WCs are still amateurs…how? Because they’re not paid a salary? Because they’re paid on commission? Ridiculous.

by marc w on Jul 29, 2008 11:56 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Wait you mean a team comprised almost

entirely of 6’7” ish wingmen who can’t shoot well, can’t play defense, and don’t pass the ball is ill-suited for the international game?

by LantermanC on Jul 29, 2008 12:01 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yo tambien.

How about blindly supporting a major league baseball team?

... even when you have major issues with how the team was selected?

Is it just me, or is this AJ trade looking worse every day?

by The Alaskan on Jul 29, 2008 11:18 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Not really the same...

by The Alaskan on Jul 29, 2008 11:19 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

There's a history with supporting a baseball team.

There’s not a history with a team that is different every four years.

But not the United States?

Is it just me, or is this AJ trade looking worse every day?

by The Alaskan on Jul 29, 2008 11:19 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't mean to imply anything,

though I understand why it seems that way. I’m just trying to understand the distinction. If you don’t have a conscious distinction, that would be a fine answer. If the way you like the US is different than the way you like the US, that’s fine, too. It’s just curiosity, not baiting.

Is it just me, or is this AJ trade looking worse every day?

by The Alaskan on Jul 29, 2008 11:29 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm just not going to get into politics.

Which an honest answer to your question would come dangerously close to.

by Matthew on Jul 29, 2008 11:29 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I vote to (with Matthew's permission) close this subthread and move on to something worth discussing

like how much the media influenced Donaghy’s sentence or why the US will/won’t win gold in Beijing
