As I write this around dinnertime on Saturday, who the hell knows if Washburn'll actually be getting the start? This is about as lame duck as it gets. If he does take the mound one final time as a Mariner, I'd pay good money to see him get ripped apart and taken out of the game by Kenji Johjima, who approaches him holding a Yankee jersey and a switchblade. Be it tonight, tomorrow, or in a couple of days - good riddance, Jarrod. I will forever cherish that one memory we share together, the one where I sat here grinning like an idiot and your ass got traded.

----------

You've earned it, Dave.

Someone with an OPS that’s above .630

by katal on Jul 27, 2008 10:34 AM PDT reply actions

I don't know

They could finalize the deal at any minute, then ask Washburn while he’s in the dugout if he will accept his no-trade clause. They can pull him from the game the moment he agrees.

by katal on Jul 27, 2008 10:37 AM PDT up reply actions

But things haven't been agreed to yet

As long as the deal isn’t finalized, they’ll have him play. If they sat him, it would only raise flags in NY (“Is he hurt?” etc).

Rosenthal:
The New York Yankees have made an offer to the Seattle Mariners for left-hander Jarrod Washburn.

According to a major-league source, the package includes an average prospect, plus the absorption of nearly all of the money remaining on Washburn’s contract.

But as of noon ET Sunday, with Washburn scheduled to pitch at 1:07 p.m. against the Toronto Blue Jays, no deal had been reached.

The Mariners spoke to Washburn Friday on about waiving his no-trade clause to the Yankees. The escalation in trade talks since then indicates that the pitcher is willing to pitch in New York. But at the moment, the Mariners want more than the Yankees are willing to give.

So we'd be paying a AAA player 4 million a year until 2011

I don’t agree with trading one problem for another. It might be less of a problem than Washburn, but it’s still a problem.

by OlSalty on Jul 27, 2008 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions

But you're not saving as much as if you just let the Yankees cover the whole salary

I just think we could do better with that money if someone smart is running the team.

Plus I don’t think it was mentioned in that rumor whether the Yankees would cover 100% of Washburn’s salary along with Igawa/Melky. All I heard was that they offered Igawa/Melky for him and we declined, maybe we turned it down because they weren’t offering to take that salary in that original deal.

If he's not traded by July 31st.

I want it done too, but as long as it gets done eventually.

Haha..You should see the one from the other day.

The fans are calling out his name during the game, like they do every position player, and the players usually just wave a hand to acknowledge. Melky decides to acknowledge the crowd as the ball in in play and rolling to him (single up the middle). So he turns away and waves to the fans, and the ball hits his glove and bounces into right center, and the runner goes to second.

Despite that, he’s probably one of the Top 10 or so CF guys (defensively) in the majors this yr

Can someone fill me in on what metrics you guys use for defense?

Are the HBT in zone and out of zone rankings considered crap by you guys?

Man, Washburn has been so effective,

the Yanks should give us that AAA outfielder as well.

Nomar Garciaparra just landed on his back

maybe their is still a chance they’ll want Yuni.

Well they traded for Blake

and gave up a better package than he was worth so who knows. Probably depends upon how hurt Nomar ends up being. I think they’ll go for McDonald though.

NY Radio Report?

A friend just called me from NY and said that the Yanks have added Phil Coke along with Cabrara and are just waiting for physicals to complete the trade. Is there any confrimation from this end or just more bronx smoke?

(no mention of what’s his name DH)
