They have a beer thread (kinda.')

Speaking of which, I read Off-Topic Diary of the (Millennium) again last night.

To further elaborate

if you look at the splits of every starter in baseball, in any given year there will only be a handful of LHBs each year that hit exceptionally well against LHP, your much better off going righty on lefty.

by JI on Jul 26, 2008 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

And to add those LHBs are almost always stars

Last year:

Pena, Utley, Bonds, Ichiro, (and probably a few others I can’t think of) are the LHBs really hit exceptionally well against LHP.

by JI on Jul 26, 2008 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Depends.

We need Raul and Jarrod traded for good young position talent like nobody’s business.

by Matthew on Jul 26, 2008 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Dave's point is correct

but personally, I’d take a slight discount to make sure that Raul is gone and the talent that we got back was further along the development curve than two compensation picks.

by Matthew on Jul 26, 2008 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Neither here nor there, but Graham and I were curious and looked it up this morning.

The Mariners selections with our two comp picks for A-Rod:
Michael Garciaparra
Rene Rivera.

Let the Mets overpay us

with the expectation being that they can get prospects back in next year’s draft. It’s what the A’s used to do.

by katal on Jul 26, 2008 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions

and honestly

You’re talking about one half of his right handed at bats which is ~16% of all his PAs. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

by JI on Jul 26, 2008 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Dickey's a cool guy

I’d rather watch him succeed.

by katal on Jul 26, 2008 11:24 AM PDT reply actions

You think with his ~93 MPH FB

tits could be an OK middle reliever.

by JI on Jul 26, 2008 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions

I think he will be next year

If Hyphen and Morrow are stretched into starters, there won’t be much room for him in the rotation.

Bedard Felix Morrow Hyphen Silva

Is a rotation I would enjoy watching four out of five days

I saw the Dark Knight last night

WOW. And good thing I went by myself because it was packed in the theater, so I was able to use the trick of sitting in the middle of 3 available seats, so I had probably the only two empty seats in the theater on either side of me

What did Manny do now?

I’m hearing all sorts of trade talks and possible waivers.

by Matthew on Jul 26, 2008 11:47 AM PDT reply actions

From a baseball perspective

The Sox should sell on Manny, he’s one of those guys whose rep far surpasses his abilities.

by JI on Jul 26, 2008 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions

He must have done something insane though

because the media talking like he wont be on the team come August no matter what. As in, if they can’t trade him, they’ll release him. There’s no way that’s true, but for them to say it means something’s amiss.

by Matthew on Jul 26, 2008 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

There’s no way the Sox dump him. They may let him walk this winter, but they’re not going to push him out this season.

by Matthew on Jul 26, 2008 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Even though he loses 20 points in a real park

he’s still a good DH and a draw, they can’t release him.

Via Rosenthal:
The Yankees have acquired outfielder Xavier Nady and left-hander Damaso Marte from the Pirates.

The Pirates received a package of four minor-league players — Class AAA right-handers Ross Ohlendorf, Jeff Karstens, and Daniel McCutchen, and Class AA outfielder Jose Tabata.

This is a change from the original package thought to be headed to Pittsburgh. Karstens and McCutchen were late replacements in the deal for Class AA left-hander Phil Coke and righty George Kontos, according to two sources familiar with the talks.

Rotoworld

The Indians have reportedly acquired Anthony Reyes from the Cardinals for Luis Perdomo.
And the day just keeps getting better for Cleveland. Stealing Reyes away for a relief prospect is a great trade for the Indians. Perdomo is promising and has a chance of developing into a setup man, but Reyes still has what it takes to become a reliable starter and should be helped by the change of scenery. “He told me how much he wants to play, and I appreciate that,” Riggleman said. “I had to let him know that the day off wasn’t for him but to get other guys in the lineup. But the thing is that he’s making it easier for me if his on-base percentage stays at .275.

“He’s giving me reasons to give him days off. He has to understand that.”

From Baker:
We’re headed to the eighth inning, with Seattle down 8-3, but on the bigger news front, we’re hearing buzz that Jarrod Washburn might not make it to tomorrow with the M’s. A trade with the New York Yankees appears imminent. We’re trying to peer into the dugout to see whether he’s still there. We’ll have an update after the game.

Also

Per Jayson Stark, the Mets are going hard for Ibanez now.

by Scrupio on Jul 26, 2008 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

The part I like most

“Even Ibanez may not be affordable, however. Seattle hasn’t asked interested teams for specific names yet. But the Mariners are one of many clubs saying that, because Ibanez projects as a Type A free agent, they would want the equivalent of a first-round pick and a sandwich pick for him.”

by Scrupio on Jul 26, 2008 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Sounds good

We’d pick up a few years development, a Strasburg boost, and the likelyhood of Raul not returning next year.
