Pirates and Yanks Swap

Heading to New York:
Damaso Marte
Xavier Nady

Heading to Pittsburgh:
P Ross Ohlendorf
P Phil Coke
P George Kontos
OF Jose Tabata

I'm not sure how this impacts the Jarrod Washburn trade rumors, though it does mean that the Yanks are buying and they just added a full time OF so that could be interpreted as being more prone to giving up one of Melky Cabrera / Brett Gardner. We will wait and see I guess.

Ken Rosenthal update:

The deal with the Pirates might not be the Yankees' last before Thursday's unrestricted trade deadline. The team also is pursuing Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn for its rotation, and the Mariners spoke with Washburn on Friday about waiving his no-trade clause to the Yankees, according to a major-league source.

I'm sure others will coment with more depth and knowledge,

but off the top of my head Tabata is/was sort of like Triunfel or Martinez in the Mets system. Scouts like him and he’s young for his level, but he hasn’t really produced in some time. Some credit this to a wrist injury but others are a bit more skeptical about his ability to put it all together. Just my recollections from following him from afar for the past few years.

by DCMariner on Jul 25, 2008 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Not that I'm arguing Triunfel hasn't produced.

Just that Tabata was always the very young prospect with big upside in their system.

by DCMariner on Jul 25, 2008 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's kind of the impression I got.

Lots of tools and very young. High risk, high reward.

Tabata was

the Triunfel / FMart / Villalona of the Yanks.

He’s never produced. And scouts have actually become down on him. There are reported makeup and conditioning issues. Apparently, he might like fast food too much.

Tabata

Is the Yankees version of Triunfel.

He was suspended a month or so ago after leaving the game in the 7th inning following a strikeout. He was struggling this year and got frustrated and straight up left the entire ballpark before the game was over.

Nady sucks.

If this is anybody but Steve Allen, you're stealing my bit.

His aim is a lot better this year.

If this is anybody but Steve Allen, you're stealing my bit.

Yeah I just saw that.

No, no...

Matthew and Dr. Klaw disagree (somewhat?)...this isn’t…possible…there must be a rip in the space time continuum. I don’t know who to trust anymore.

Xavier Nady has spent most of his career as a lefty-masher who didn’t hit right-handed pitching at all, and only started to hit righties a little bit in 2007 before exploding against them this year in a career season. He’s not likely to keep hitting at this pace, certainly not into 2009,

Let the record show that I'm actually confused

And the above post is not just a lame attempt to crack a space-time continuum joke.

I hope the Rays get Texieria.

The Arizona Diamondbacks do not want, nor do they need a left fielder.

Conor Jackson is the left fielder. Chad Tracy/Tony Clark is the first basemen. They are not in need of a left fielder.

I honestly do not know.

But I imagine he’s better than Ibanez.

He was drafted as an outfielder, and played left field all the way up till AAA. They moved him off the position, not so much of any defensive shortcomings, but because at the time they had Gonzo and Shawn Green entrenched in the corners for the next few years. Whereas at first base they just had the likes of Shea Hillenbrand. So moving him to first base was the quickest way to get his stick to the majors.

But even if his defense is as bad as Ibanez, his bat is obviously way better.

Nice haul for the yanks.

No matter what you give the pirates they won’t improve.

Seems like a decent haul for the Pirates.

Unless Tabata is another part of the Yankees’ hype machine.

That makes me sad

I wanted to see Phil Coke make it to the big leagues and have Josh Hamilton face him…:(

I fucking hate you Mariners

Sooo, what are our chances at Cashman?

Because I’d sure love to have a guy run this team that knows how to get a deal done (and perhaps more importantly, how not to). Although I wonder if he’d be as good with a limited budget.

I'm convinced he's our next GM

Big name GM with a history of success with a large payroll. Exactly what 90% of the fans want right now.

The exchange

You already know about Tabata. Off the top of my head about the pitchers:

Ohlendorf: Okayish SP that keeps walks down and misses bats as an SP in minors, but has worked out of the pen for Yankees this year with reasonable success. He’ll be 26 in a couple weeks. I can easily see the Pirates shoving him in their rotation.

Phil Coke: 26 year old lefty SP in AA with similar profile. He could be a year away from helping the Pirates.

George Kontos: 23 year old SP in his 3rd pro year who has progressed along fine in Yankees system, and is missing bats in AA right now. Has a bigger problem with walking guys and leaving meatballs up in the zone than the other two.

Can’t complain about any of these three, really. The Pirates restocked well, all for an interim closer and a useful but expendable MLB outfielder.

Good plan

Nice job Pirates.

Ohlendorf may be better than Marte right now, but looked godawful thanks to pitiful Yankee defense. Marte gives up more LDs, fewer GBs, and has a ‘better’ HR/FB rate.

I can’t believe the Yankees gave up Tabata in a minor deal like this….

by marc w on Jul 26, 2008 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions

It was asinine.

Luckily my ire was quickly calmed by watching A-Rod get nailed in the arm by a pitch and subsequently leave the game.
