7/23 Minor League Wrap-Up

- It sneaks up on you:  After today, the VSLMs have only 8 games remaining in their season, which ends August 2nd.

- The VSLMs had to play a doubleheader with the competitive VSL Phillies yesterday.  Starter Erasmo Ramirez saved the bullpen with a surprising complete game in which he allowed 3 runs, only one earned, walked none, struck out 5 and allowed 7 hits.  What the heck, I haven't done this in a while:

Groundballs:  18
Flyballs:  3
Line Drives:  6
Pop Ups:  2
Walks:  0 (but 1 hit batter)
Strikeouts:  5

Now, VSL groundball rates are always high because the league consists of 18 year old kids still struggling to drive the ball, but 18 groundballs is still impressive at any level.

- The DSLMs also had a doubleheader, and they got a little sloppy in the nightcap with the AthleticsDos, committing SIX errors in 7 innings before losing on a walkoff single.

Their front-end game, a 2-0 game, was equally interesting: no strikeouts.   Aside from a pickoff, every out was in play.

- Hi, Scott Savastano.  Peoria just started playing this year's 28th round pick from Franklin Pierce University a couple days ago.  The Mariners were the 3rd team to draft the alleged slick fielding shortstop (though it's obviously doubtful if the 6'4", 195 pound Savastano will stick at SS), and he finally decided to sign rather than return to Franklin Pierce for his senior year.  He did play a couple of games with the Aquasox, but it looks like he'll ride out the season in Peoria before the M's reassess his development path for 2009.

- One day after eating a rain-shortened no hitter, the Pulaski Mariners... ate an 8 hit shutout in a 5-0 loss to the Burlington Royals, owners of the App League's worst record at 12-24.  Slump city for the PMs.

- In the spirit of the T-Rats taking it easy with the young top pitching talent, Juan Ramirez pitched out of the bullpen yesterday, working the 7th and 8th innings of Wisconsin's 6-1 loss to West Michigan without allowing a hit.

- Carlos Triunfel is starting to turn the corner and drive the ball with authority.  A couple days after blasting an opposite field grand slam, he went 4 for 4 on Wednesday.  Be afraid.  Now it's just a matter of polishing his defense and finding him a comfortable position, probably at a corner.

- So much for streak #2: In picking up his 5th save with the DIAMOND JAXX, Shawn Kelley gave up two runs, one earned, to end his streak of frames without an unearned run at 7.

PHAT ANDY 22:  Yo
Seven strong innings, boys.  Rent's due. Good game, Lindsay Gulin.  But your team name's all wrong, cause PHAT ANDY's got the Sounds, and it ain't no country western.  Check me out....

Today's your lucky day, Lindsay
(But isn't that a girl's name?)
You pitched yourself a good game
And all my bats were swinging lame
And Baek Bait gave away the game
And once again we lose
Nice park you got, Clown Shoes
It give the power hitters blues
Their flyballs make them look like fools
Like they didn't get the news
That guitar out in left field saying CLANK-A-CLANK YOU LOSE
This rhyme's a little weak
I haven't rapped all week
The rust makes all my lyrics creak
It's like our MOTO, looking bleak
WLAD plays outfield like a freak
And yet it doesn't matter
Where are all my batters?
Where's my dugout chatter?
My lyric's gonna shatter
But Andy's getting Phatter
And don't think losses matter
Resolve will make me badder
Cuz I'll still get you bitches out
Cuz that's what Phat Andy's about!

Word to your father, Tony Gwynn Jr.  Andy is Phat, but your daddy is FAT.

Shawn Kelley gave up two runs?! Cut him now.

He’s already got 2 earned runs in AA. Why is he still in this org?

Did you guys see the video of the brawl

in the Midwest league game between the Reds and Cubs affiliates? That pitcher is totally screwed. Trying to throw a ball into the other teams dugout, he missed and hit a fan that had to be taken to the hospital? He’s got felony assualt charges pending on him now.

One player beaned in the head, another with a broken leg from what I read…. its on ESPN’s website.

I was just going to write about that

totally insane.
The guy with the broken leg wasn’t related to the brawl, mind you, but it’s still quite a trail of devastation.

Yeah the broken leg

and the head beaning were all just from the same game. Wonder if that pitcher will ever get another work Visa for coming over?

yeah, and did you see Peoria's manager is none other than

Carmelo Martinez, cousin of St. Edgar? Mellow Carmelo will be suspended for sure.

I wonder about that pitcher’s immigration status as well. The Cubs’ll probably quietly just cut him; he’s not exactly lighting it up with his pitching (tells you something that he aimed for a fucking dugout… and missed).
