Hello, LLers. As some of you may know, I will be making a special guest appearance in Seattle in August. What you don't know is that I will also be invading California for a week and I would love suggestions for things to do there. I will be starting in San Francisco and will work my way down to Los Angeles and San Diego. I would love tips on: 1) Things to do in the bay area, 2) Places to see on the drive from the bay area to Los Angeles, and 3) Fun things in LA (near UCLA, seattlebruin this is all you), SD, and maybe even Tijuana.

Star-divide

Also helpful would be tips on where to find good eats. Look out, California, I'm coming for you.

San Diego is a great town

Go to Petco. The park is gorgeous. While you are there, hit the Gaslamp District. All sorts good places to eat and drink. San Diego Zoo is one of, if not the, best zoos in the world. Check it out. Wild Animal Park is cool, but its a long drive to just look at more animals. The Zoo is in Balboa Park which has 13+ museums. Cherry pick anything that will interest you (Aerospace museum is one I like). Hotel Del Coronado is an institution. You need to go and look at it. Proposed to my wife there (just like 50% of all other San Diegans). Tijuana is….. yeah, not really worth it. Its cool if you are 19 and want to drink sort of legally and get a fat stripper to sleep with you. Other than that, the zebra-painted donkeys depress me.

Make sure you get a California burrito. There are thousands of burrito places in San Diego and they all have one. Usually, the crappier the building, the better the burrito. If you want something that looks good and tastes okay, go to Sombrero’s. There are 20 or so of them. While in California, hit an In and Out. Its a bit over-rated, but its the taste of SoCal. Get the fries animal-style (forget about any heart conditions you might have).

Fun Mississippi activity:

Find the smallest town possible that still has a bar, walk inside and announce loudly; “Hello, friends, I’m from Los Angeles by way of Seattle. I was wondering if you could tell me where to find the nearest Whole Foods Market. My boyfriend has a serious craving for oysters, and you all know what that means!” The locals will find it hilarious and buy you a beer.

No. Mississippi is by far the worst.

Civilization exists in Alabama and Tennessee—particularly Tennessee. At least they have large cities, some form of culture, a few decent universities.

Tennessee is one of the better places in the south, but it’s still the south.

Starkville and Oxford are somewhat pretty and moderately less backwoods.

The rest of the state should have an electric fence put up around it. It would take a week for the entire population of the state to be electrocuted while urinating.

by acblue on Jul 24, 2008 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hahahahahahaha

Starkville is hideous and filled with backwards people. The people look the same, talk the same, believe the same. It could be wiped off the map entirely and I would giggle with glee.

College towns are generally worth preserving.

I was a little kid when I spent any significant amount of time there. My Uncle Lynn was a Professor at MSU and he was awesome so it’s entirely possible that any good memories of the place are directly related to him.

by acblue on Jul 24, 2008 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Geographically or culturally?

Geographically, nothing. Culturally, Alabama and Mississippi are fairly close, but Alabama is a bit less destitute. West Tennessee is a lot more like the Midwest, and Eastern Tennessee (at least in the population centers) has a fairly Progressive Southerner vibe going on, kinda’ like Atlanta.

TN is one of the more up and coming areas in the US.

Nashville and Memphis are darling cities and Knoxville isn’t bad. I rate TN ahead of Kentucky and I rather like Kentucky as well.

Places in the US that suck:
the ND-OK line: for reason of being really boring
the AR-MS-AL-LA (outside NO) quadrant: for being oh-my-god y’all backward.
MI: for having Detroit in it

Convince him :-)

I think it really is a beautiful drive. Also, Monterey, Big Sur etc are nice areas to visit and see.

I agree with what has been said about San Diego. If I would want to live in a big city, that would be the place for me. Absolutely love it there.

Are you into art and museums and those kind of things ? There are some interesting places to visit in LA if that’s the case. There are also some interesting places in LA if you want to party ;-), so if you need advice on any of those just let me know.

Checkout Balboa (peninsula) @ Newport Beach. I quite like it there as well.

Big Sur isn't so pretty since it just burnt down.

Unless you are attracted to smoking cinders.

by TheEmrys on Jul 24, 2008 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't Take PCH

Unless you have unlimited time and don’t mind staying in places you hadn’t plan to visit. The fires through Big Sur and then even further down towards Santa Barbara still have things messed up. Of course, it wil make sightseeing easier because you only will want to look at the ocean—not the devastated hillsides.

If you have time, and if they had not had these fires, then a drive down PCH is an unforgettable experience. Under current circumstances, I’d blast down I-5 and get to your destination efficiently.

While in SF, take the Alcatraz Tour from Fisherman’s Wharf. If you can catch a game at Insert Dime Here Park it is worth even watching the Giants play. For nightlilfe, there are about a billion bars of all persuasions in the South of Market area—just follow the crowds that include people you think you would like to hang out with.

by kva15 on Jul 24, 2008 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The alcatraz tour is pretty fun

But avoid the rest of Fisherman’s Wharf. Too touristy. Check out Castro and Haight/Ashbury just to get the feel of the neighborhoods. Japantown/Chinatown are fun to walk through as well. Just avoid Tenderloin on your walking tours.

there’s a restaurant in San Diego called Jyoti-Bihanga that is run by a group of followers of Sri Chinmoy, who is a New Age Spiritual Leader kinda’ dude. The food is delicious, and everyone that works there is totally serene is a really unsettling way. It’s bizarre but awesome.

Good, fresh-never-frozen burgers, hand-cut fries; it’s always been cheap, and they’ve always hired HS kids and given them good wages/benefits when most fast food chains pay minimum wage and no benefits.

I enjoy their business practices much, much more

than I enjoy their products.

That’s just me. I’m weird like that.
Part of it is that they don’t do any sort of special order, which I think is a bit lame. On the plus side, they’re really, really cheap. And yes, at 1:30, after a show, it tastes pretty good. But then, 1:30, after a show, a number of better options pop up – the great Seattle street dog, for one.

LA to Nebraska takes you through some interesting countryside.

The problem with LA to Tacoma is that, assuming you take I-5, it’s nothing but sprawl, hicktowns and Medford. There are worse drives, but it’s not fun. The majority of the awful is between LA and Portland, though.

Pretty much

I remember getting so excited when we finally hit Oregon just because I knew the scenery would become interesting. And then hitting Portland because I knew I was almost home.

Yes. It's just awful.

That’s why I would endorsing the PCH if you have enough time. I-5 through California is miserable.

I-70 east from Denver to the I-335 cutoff is really insanely horrible

alternately the entire length of the western I-76

The Next Food Network Star is one of the greatest shows ever

I had never seen it before but there’s a marathon on now and I can’t stop watching. If only they would stop ruining the ends of episodes in the coming up segments

Episode's ending, someone's getting kicked off

It’s too bad I know who are the last remaining since they showed promos for the final episode during the marathon. Bastards

Okay, you got me hooked on the show.

I may even begin watching the channel while making dinner from now on.

From San Francisco ---> Santa Barbara

If you have the time take the Highway 1 scenic route through Monterey and continue down through Big Sur. If Big Sur isn’t completely charcoal by now it is a beautiful coastal drive with redwood trees on one side and spectacular ocean views on the other. In Big Sur there is a little country store with a big lawn in back - can’t remember the name but it is easy to spot - sometimes there will be bands playing. Good place for a break to have a sandwich and a beer.

Then head down Hwy 1 and stop in San Simeon to check out Hearst Castle or if that ain’t your thing just keep going and cruise through Morro(w) Bay and snap a picture of “the rock” as you continue on to San Luis Obispo.

In SLO stop in at SLO Brewing Co for some good beer then ask someone how to get to TAs (Tio Alberto’s) for some excellent and fast Mexican food. I recommend the pollo asado burrito. Then cruise around that area and check out the bars, etc. It is a college town so plenty of bars. If you like pizza ask someone where Woodstock’s is.

From there the 101 takes you all the way to Santa Barbara and eventually LA. Santa Barbara has always been meh to me but if you stop there the action is apparently all on State St.

I also recommend staying away from Tijuana. If you want a little experience of Mexico take the 94 a ways east and follow the signs to Tecate. Not much there but you can go to the Tecate brewery and get a few free beers—you don’t even need to take the tour. Just walk up and they’ll give you some drink tickets.

The massive problem is that most of the things we've put up are 21+ joints

I’ll have to put some more thought into this so LFoJL doesn’t spend seven days getting rejected at bars and clubs

Don't worry, you'll get rejected by large men at the door

rather than by the pretty girls inside

You need to make a special guest appearance in Canada.

Lower drinking age, and less Budweiser.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

I think SLO Brew will let < 21 in during the day,

but it has been quite a bit since I’ve been down there.

I'm also going to the Bay Area later in the summer

Mainly for various college visits but there’s time for other things. Anything worthwhile there outside of SF? Already going to an A’s game, sadly, because the Giants are out of town. Hopefully that and visiting Berkeley are the only reasons I’ll be close to Oakland.

Form what I read, Alcatraz tour, downtown, fisherman’s wharf, In-n-out (which I went to in Anaheim and will probably go to again)

Also, Dick’s would be outstanding if you could get a custom order. My picky self however has to pick stuff off. This lowers it a few notches.

I think my first visit to Berkeley was one of the most fun experiences of my life

with my friend who works there explaining about how the bums are just part of UCB life, etc.

It rained on game day

when I went to Berkeley. And ucla fans tried to pick a fight with Dr. Bartner’s body guards despite the fact that their team was losing that weekend (and hundreds of miles away) and we were destroying Berkeley.

Sorry if these were said already

In SAN FRANCISCO
-Ride a cable car
-drive down Lombard Street
-Drive or walk over the Golden Gate Bridge (of course!)
-Go to Alcatraz
-Pier 39
-In my opinion, San Francisco has the best Chinatown if you like Asian stuff
-Get Dungeness Crab from Fisherman’s Wharf (if you like crab)
-Embarcadero
-Go to AT&T Park

-Near San Francisco, in Sonoma County there is WONDERFUL wine country. If you have time, go do some tasting! BEAUTIFUL scenery is a bonus
-If you have time to go to the Redwood forest, it is quite a sight. Pretty drive as well.

In SAN DIEGO
-PETCO Park!
-Sea World!!
-Belmont Park-big amusement park
-San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park (SD has one of the better zoos I have been to)
-Mission Beach is fun and pretty-good bars there too
-Black’s Beach in La Jolla is perhaps the biggest nude beach in southern CA…

I lived in near San Francisco and L.A. before movign to Seattle and have relatives in San Diego (La Jolla)...

The Embarcadero is basically a street by the waterfront that stretches from near AT&T Park to Pier 45

There is a Subway station and BART on it.
Also, the Ferry terminal is on it
F Market and Wharves is a railway line on it
At Hyde Street Pier, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park has a fleet of ships from the late 1800s-early1900s.
There is also a statue, “Cupid’s Span” which symbolizes where Tony Bennett left his heart.
Market Street is a major thoroughfare on the Embarcadero. (like shopping)

The Embarcadero is a good place to be if you want to do a lot of stuff in one day.
