Mariners aren't stupid, just have a "different approach"

"I'm just kind of using it just to try to have some contact in that spot, and maybe be able to move some runners and hit and run and that kind of stuff, get some at-bats for some guys," interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "It's not a classic DH spot where we're looking for our DH to give us 25 to 30 home runs and 100 RBIs, that's just not what we are. So I'm fine with it the way it is."

Eh...Riggleman is just toeing the line, right? He can't possibly believe that running Vidro out there is effective each day.

But wait...

"It's not a classic DH situation, but I feel good every time he walks up to the plate," Riggleman said. "The numbers may say otherwise, but I think he's going to give us good at-bats."

Kind of akin to saying, "yeah, doctors may say eating five pound bags of refined sugar is bad for you, but I feel good every time I do it."

*sigh*

If you dare...

Also I love how he dismisses the numbers.

Sure, he can’t get on base, hit for power or hit for average, but by golly he sure does stand there real purty-like.

Nobody will take that job

because two weeks after it’s built it’ll just collapse, leaving a gaping hole where the floor used to be.

I'd want the job

get paid for the first one, then immediately get an identical re-do job? Sounds like good work to me

But then

you’d have to put “employed by the Seattle Mariners” on your resume, which will not thrill potential new clients…

Well you don't HAVE to put it on your resume

when I applied for my job, I didn’t list my pharmacy delivery work on my resume, but I kept the money I made as HS spending $$

Two weeks is still a long time

We could have the floor built just for the trade deadline

The stupid! It STILL burns!!!!!

This is suppose to be shocking?

Someone associated with the Mariners speaks and you think its not going to be the most stupid thing you’ve ever heard?

What do you expect him to say?

You can’t really expect the guy to admit to the media, let alone the team’s promotional website, that he’s tanking games. So he HAS to act like these team-killing decisions make sense.

by Gomez on Jul 23, 2008 9:55 AM PDT   0 recs

Maybe he's hoping for the Doc Rivers treatment.

Doc Rivers tanked games for his team in order to try to get Durant/Oden. Then “coached” a super team to WS win. So that means somehow we get an ARod-type can’t win veteran (KG), trade a young gun for a good but aging veteran… Chipper? (Ray Ray), and get a couple of good fillers that can play defense… and… no Strasburg.
Yes, I realize this plan gives us 3 third basemen…

The Mariner different approach:

Sure, the wins and losses may not be what we like, but our thinking is that we’ll get good results from ignoring reality.

I maintain that the Seattle baseball fandom is so far the best argument against free will that I have met.

Is our organization REALLY plagued with stupidity from top to bottom (to this degree)?

I thought we got rid of a problem with Mclaren but Riggleman is returning where Mclaren left off.

What is this feeling of hopelessness I’ve had for the past 4 years?

by wongguy on Jul 23, 2008 3:17 PM PDT   0 recs

You're fooling yourself..

...if you think we could solve our problems by getting rid of Bavasi and the manager.

This kind of thinking permeates the entire organization, from top to bottom, from execs to scouts.

You need to fire 50-60% of the personnel, or wait it out until they retire….

by rtang on Jul 23, 2008 7:27 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Execs? Sure.

Scouts? No way. The Mariners’ scouting department is great. Engle and Fontaine can’t do anything about talented players being thrown away in ill-advised trades or having the growth of prospects stunted by overly aggressive promotion. This organization has plenty of problems, but few (if any) of them involve scouting.

by acblue on Jul 23, 2008 11:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Hey...

I said 50-60%. Gotta assume Engle and Fontaine are in the retained fraction….

But ya gotta figure the rest of the department can’t be too hot if they’re consistently coming up with crap in deals (major leaguers and minor leaguers, HoRam, Vidro et al)...

by rtang on Jul 24, 2008 10:02 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I have few complaints with the amateur scouting department.

Every other aspect of the organization has major problems.
