7/21 Minor League Wrap-Up

- LATE.  Work-related.  I'm not going to go into too much detail.

- Carlos Triunfel hit a GRAND SLAM on Monday against Lancaster.  Granted, there was yet another 18 mph wind towards the LF foul pole in Adelanto, but still.

- The High Desert Mavs, to date, have used 29 different pitchers this season.  TWENTY NINE.  The Tacoma Rainiers have used twenty seven.  TWENTY SEVEN.  Such is the life of a minor league ballclub, to powercycle through guys as they get called up, suck and get sent down, get hurt, randomly quit, etc.

- The Rainiers have added reliever Oscar Villarreal to their bullpen.  The Mexican lefthander just got let go by the Astros, where he had pitched in 31 games with the big club, running a 5.02 ERA off 12 HR, 17 walks and 21 K in 37.2 IP.  He pitched a scoreless 8th inning in Monday's game for the Rainiers, the first minor league action he had seen since 2005.  Highlighted by a particularly busy 2006 with the Braves (92.1 IP, mostly out of the pen), Villarreal was never all that good in the bigs other than a repeated ability to miss a few more bats (and strike zones) than average, but could certainly be of use to the Rainiers in the PCL.

- Also, the injured Mumba Rivera has returned, and worked a scoreless 9th in this game as well.  The reason it was a 6-1 loss was because Joe Woerman was locating the suck pitch rather well.

With Ryan Rowland-Smith heading to the Tacoma rotation, I can think of one candidate to go to the bullpen once some of these injured Rainiers pitchers get healthy.

Alright, now STATS....

At the T-Rats game

Dunigan took a line drive to the face and was down for a few minutes not moving. He eventually left under his own power, but it was pretty scary.

Also, Paredes was much better than his stat line indicates. Got a bunch of swinging strikes, and he was the victim of multiple bad defensive plays that weren’t scored as errors but certainly weren’t his fault. Anything else I can contribute, just let me know… It’s just one game, but I’m assuming you may not have seen a lot of these guys in person so I’m happy to offer whatever I can.

I'm surprised there's nothing on Rattler Radio about this

I’ll look into it, and I hope Dunigan’s okay.

Hopefully it wasn't covered because it wasn't a serious injury

He probably should have caught the ball that hit him, since it bounced off his glove and kicked up into his face, but he’s pretty new to first base, isn’t he?
Also, what do you know about Liddi’s defense? Extremely SSS, but he looked very good, making a couple of huge throws all the way across the diamond and showing a steady glove. Is he good enough to stick at third?

You tell me

You think so? That’d be nice. Not sure the bat can survive a move further down the defensive spectrum, but hey, he’s young.

How did his swing look?

by marc w on Jul 23, 2008 8:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, he looked excellent to me, but I'm judging him on one game.

Very comfortable, quick reactions, and a strong arm. He was a particular standout, given the shaky defense in the MWL.

As far as his swing goes, he certainly LOOKED the part, at least, and it’s easy to see where the power comes from. He’s big, but could still probably fill out some more. His stats are underwhelming, but he’s improving his K/BB and certainly doesn’t look overmatched against pitchers that are mostly a few years older than him.

Speaking of Rainiers getting healthy

it looks like Ryan Feierabend will start tomorrow, then RRS gets his first start on Friday.
Someone’s going to have to make room.

I guess they’ll open up another roster spot when Mike Saunders —-> Beijing on Sunday. That would leave the team with only 4 healthy OFs, two of whom would be Victor Diaz and Shawn Garrett, so maybe they’d pull someone up from WT.

Greg Halman, come on down!

May be Mike Wilson

but hey, this is the M’s. I know the old GM ain’t here, so we’ll have to see if the push-the-prospects philosophy still holds.

Human Temp Agency

It’ll probably be Kevin Reynolds, just like last year.

Touche

Very likely. Should’ve thought of that.

I’m just excited to see Wilson. I was really hoping his Hawaiian league performance was a sign that he was slowly putting himself back on the map. Now that he has, I’m worried that the M’s will lose him to MiLB free agency just as he’s finally become useful.

If that happens, I’d at least like to see him first hand before he leaves the org.

Sarcasm =(

I’m praying they’re not really crazy enough to push Halman to AAA when he was in HD just a month ago. Especially given that he swings at EVERYTHING

They've done that before, though

Asdrubal Cabrera started 2005 in Wisconsin, went to the Cal League for a while, then ended up in Tacoma. Not for long, mind you, but still….

This org. does weird things. I think we just have to accept that at this point

on the subject of Halman, I just think he would get destroyed by AAA rejects because they’ll change speeds on him – from the couple of times I’ve seen him, he looks great on fastballs and terrible on anything else

Woo! Halman just homered

and then Mike Wilson doubled.

Mark Reynolds

Jumped from a non-prospect in AA to the DBacks overnight and is their best power hitter. I wouldn’t mind seeing Halman or Wilson get a shot with the big club sometime this year.

Wilson maybe

Halman, no. Halman’s a legit prospect, but he desperately needs to refine his approach.

Truinfel's Grand Slam

FYI….Wind was blowing to left early in the game….His GS was to RiGHT FIELD…with almost no wind. It was legit.

He’s swinging the bat much better. He’s driving the ball now as opposed to pounding it into the ground 2 feet from the plate like he did the first couple months of the season.

What defense?

He has a cannon!!! Probably one of the best in the league. However, he drops lots of balls, has poor judgement, and doesn’t like to get dirty (except for last night where he actually dove for 2 balls…my 6 year old even made the comment, “hey, he got dirty”)...but as everyone says….He’s young.

Anyone have an idea if/when one of the big three from Wisconsin might get promoted?

Lake Els. hosts High Desert July 29-31 and Aug 30 – Sep 1, and I’d love to get a chance to check them out.

What’s Adelanto’s park like? I’d love to drive up there some time and check it out, and it’s only ~ 1.5 hours or so away.

High Desert Park

I’m a homer and love the place, but the park stinks. The park is the oldest in the Southern Divsion and it’s run by a city with no money…there are brown grass patches all over the infield, the skyboxes are cinder-block cubby holes, there are broken seats all over the place, the food is lousy (except for $1 Carne Asada Tacos on Friday’s), no radar gun, and the scoreboard is your basic Innings with R-H-E’s…....but as a baseball fan you still gotta come check it out just to say you’ve been there.

by HDMavsFan on Jul 23, 2008 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd wager the M's hold off on promoting them until they know what their High A situation will be like in 2009

Though, granted, if the Mavs rotation situation gets even more dicey, they may bring one up before season’s end.
