Sad.
Cairo has been collateral damage since he signed his contract. He should have never been in a Mariners uniform and he should have known this team had no use for him. Yeah, Cairo probably found it difficult to find a job this last offseason, but I am sure there were better places out there to help increase his long-term value. He committed career suicide by signing with the Mariners.

.264/.382/.564 overall,
.323/.432/.692 in July
21K/21BB in 131 PA, 10 HR in 110 ABs, incl. 7 HR in 65 AB in July.
SSS and all, but I’m a little curious as to why our big prospects have hit so well in AAA and so poorly in the majors (this is also SSS, since it’s a sample of Adam Jones, Wlad Balentien and Clement)

PCL league average OPS is in the .780s
It’s not just offense-friendly parks (as WLAD put up a lot of those recent numbers in Cheney, a pitcher’s park), but crappy retread AAA pitchers who either can’t get over the hump or washed out in the bigs.

It's the flipside of guys like Corcoran getting shelled in AAA
and yet being oddly effective in MLB.
Seriously, part of it is an age/experience thing (certainly with Jones, a bit less so with Wlad), and part of it is just a natural learning process that many, many new MLB players have to deal with. Jumping a level is hard, and it’s not like you just take a guy’s MLE and plug it in as their first month or two’s projection. Clement struggled horribly when he got to AAA initially.
They’ll get there eventually, I’d bet.

I'd bet on them being succesful as well, it's just strange/frustrating to see our prospects flame out so horribly in the bigs
especially when they’re at an age that they should be reasonably advanced – e.g. at least have a shot at success (Clement 24, Wlad 23, Jones 22).
On the flip side, there have been quite a few top prospects who have come up and hit at least reasonably well across MLB such as Braun, Tulowitzki, Justin Upton, Longoria, etc. Of course our guys aren’t quite on the level of those four in terms of talent, but the way that (especially Wlad) flamed out at the MLB level is a little concerning to me (not a lot concerning, but a little).

When Justin Upton first came up, he didn't exactly excel
Braun is a freak, but then, he gave away a ton of value on D.
I know it’s weird to see other teams’ spects come up and add value immediately, but as you know, there’s no way to count on that. Andy LaRoche, Greg Reynolds, Luke Hochevar, Reid Brignac (extra-SSS), etc.
I agree that as the oldest of all of these guys, Clement really should be doing better. But again, he’s taken a while to adjust to advanced pitching before. To me, he’s something of a slow learner, but once he’s got it, he’s got it. Wlad’s a MUCH quicker learner (as was Jones), but they’re more inconsistent.
Wlad was considered by most M’s fans (and some M’s personnel) as org filler about 18 months ago, so I’m not terribly worried if he didn’t do as well as Tulowitzki/Braun in his call-up.

Yeah, I'm not that concerned about Wlad, more of a small red flag that he was as bad as he was in his call up
on defense as well. I still think he’ll hit at the big league level, although I’m not sure he’s ever anything more than a .260/.330/.500 masher with decent D. Of course, that’s a hell of a player if you have him for cheap so…

And I still find it funny that people are now ‘settling’ for .260/.330/.500. My god, an 800+ OPS in Safeco from a guy making peanuts?
I’m just as concerned with Clement’s D right now. Again, adjustment periods, etc., etc. Two more disappointing things in a season full of them.

though, same as with Wlad, he’s taken it up a notch.
He looked OK in Tacoma… this is… this is baaad.
In fact, we were warned on both of them. I wasn’t as worried, given how they looked in Tacoma (Clement was better in most phases of D than Rob ‘Defense Only’ Johnson), and Wlad was light years ahead of even Jeremy Reed in the corners (and ahead of Mike Saunders now, though that’s perhaps more understandable).
The moral is: yet again, scouts know some stuff. They’re not always right, but sometimes, they’re right.

I think the handling of Morrow has been the single biggest disappointment to me this season
He’s clearly an elite-level bullpen arm as an 8th or 9th inning guy, but he has so much more value long term as a starter. You’re hurting the team long-term in two ways by keeping him up here – you’re hurting his chances to become a good starter down the road (look at Papelbon) and you’re hurting the team by keeping a dynamite arm in the pen when you’re almost better off just losing the games anyway.

It's really odd
I keep wondering if there’s some sort of power struggle going on internally.
Group A succeeds in sending him to Venezuela to start
Group B succeeds in getting him back to the MLB club and in the ‘pen after he started the year in West Tenn.
Group A puts pressure on Group B through the press
Group B gets to Riggleman, insists that he’s ‘too valuable’ out of the pen now.
It’d be fascinating if it wasn’t so damned annoying.
