JJ up... RRS down

Confirmed by our friendly neighborhod fishwrap.

It may be a good thing that Jeff is out drinking fine beer instead of home watching this, because I'm sure he wouldn't like this news very much.  RRS was given maybe 3/5ths of a chance at the starting rotation, was removed to make room for some rather undeserving Beluga Tits, and now gets a very undeserved trip back to Tacoma as the apparent weak link in the bullpen.  I'm generally non-plussed at this point about the decisions this team makes in a lost season, but this move pisses me off.

We better get Strasburg after all these FAS-inspired roster decisions, you losers.

Edit: LLers at LL Softball confirmed that they heard on the radio that the idea is to stretch him out as a starter. That, obviously, I'm cool with, and wish that info was made available in the print link I found and posted. But still, I'm okay with the move now that I am aware of the intent. This has a two-fold benefit: RRS gets serious work as a starter against reasonable competition, and a depleted Rainiers pitching staff adds a much needed, and quite capable, starter to their rotation.

"Nonplussed"

I do not think it means what you think it means.

I reject your reality and substitute my own!

Also, I'm always down for some online Grand Theft Auto IV or Rock Band. Gamertag: Phildopip

Unless I've been using it wrong all my life, it means "surprised, caught off-guard," yes?

In which case I guess this is a misuse, since I think Gomez was looking to express a sentiment along the lines of “unhappy.”

Additionally, I don’t think any of us can really be nonplussed anymore about the M’s roster moves this season. After a certain point the shock wears off…it’s just expected now that they’ll do stupid things.

I root for the two worst teams in baseball, non-ironically.

It's more "unable to respond due to surprise" typically because one is so underwhelmed.

ie: “That statement/action was so wrong/stupid I cannot not think of any way to respond to it.”

That’s what I’ve always understood it to mean.

by acblue on Jul 21, 2008 12:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Me too

It wouldn’t be the first word whose usage I was wrong about, though, so if it indeed means surprised… my mistake, then. I’ll check up on it after work. I learn something new everyday.

Ummm

From what riggleman said he is getting demoted “to become a full time starter”

Isn’t this kind of what we wanted all along?

Yeah, although I don't know what he needs in AAA...

All of his pitches are pretty developed, he has no problem throwing them in any count, and he can locate them all.
If it’s just to get stretched out, why not do it up with the Ms? I don’t really understand what AAA does for him.

by lailaihei on Jul 20, 2008 2:05 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

RRS can't locate them all.

That’s kinda his problem.

by Matthew on Jul 20, 2008 4:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

This is what I heard pre-game.

He’s down to Tacoma to stretch out as a starter. I imagine he’ll be back in a month to take a spot in the pen.

Seems like this is a reactionary move to Tits’ implosion yesterday.

by BrianL on Jul 20, 2008 2:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

At LL Softball, I was advised that, on the radio, they confirmed this

so, as sheepish as it is to make an addendum… I’m more cool with this move. I wish that info was available via print when I found out.

by Gomez on Jul 20, 2008 8:12 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I would have been less explosive-mad

...if I had heard that the first time I saw the news in print.
So, for the time being guess I’ll have to go see him in Tacoma

by Smith18 on Jul 20, 2008 8:25 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't know what to think

It’s hard to believe that the M’s are actually doing something to improve the team.

by griggs on Jul 20, 2008 2:04 PM PDT   0 recs

Per Bob Condotta (filling in for Baker)
The plan is to have Rowland-Smith become a full-time starter in Tacoma with the thought that he will return to Seattle and join the rotation at some point this season.

Manager Jim Riggleman said Rowland-Smith was “not real happy’’ about being sent down but that the team felt the best way to transform him into a starter was to have him make a few in Tacoma.

Rowland-Smith threw 75 pitches in Saturday’s game and Riggleman said it won’t take much to extend him out. Asked if Rowland-Smith would be back in September, Riggleman said “I doubt very much it would be all the way to September before we see him again.’’ He said one option could be to simply add another starter to the rotation when Rowland-Smith is ready to return.

by BrianL on Jul 20, 2008 2:31 PM PDT   0 recs

holy shit

they’re actually gonna stretch him out? When I saw the title of this diary/fanpost I had that thought in the back of my head, but the Mariners almost never actually do the right thing. I’m surprised to say the least.

Boo no Hyphen

Yay more starting Hyphen, long-term

by Nick S on Jul 20, 2008 5:24 PM PDT   0 recs

A really smart move would be doing this with Morrow.

However, this the most forward thinking move the team has made in ages.

by BrianL on Jul 20, 2008 5:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I hope...they actually do what they say they are doing

And that we will see Hyphen in the rotation in a month or so.
But my faith in the front office isn’t very high. Please, do something good for once!!
Was extremely upset to find out RR-S was the one sent down…I just hope it is for the good so I don’t have to “cry” no more!

by Smith18 on Jul 20, 2008 6:55 PM PDT   0 recs

So, how do we break this to Jeff?

Do we tell him it’s good to have some separation for a little while? Perhaps they should just see other people for a little bit?

by BrianL on Jul 20, 2008 8:51 PM PDT   0 recs

GRRR... Jeff doesnt know it?

At least he will know more of the facts like the reasons he was sent down…but it will still be hard. I understand.
Time for some Tacoma games.

I'm glad he took the news well.

Poor Jeff’s been through enough this year, being forced to let go of Ben and all.

by BrianL on Jul 20, 2008 9:50 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Where is that dude, anyway?

Looks like back in the Yankees’ farm system for the second time this year?

by Teej on Jul 20, 2008 9:57 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Not sure if that was a rhetorial question or serious

But yes. Broussard is on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (AAA).

by Smith18 on Jul 20, 2008 10:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

He did find out via text message

He sends me texts with horrible news like “goodbye Doyle” and “Bedard deal is done”. I give him good news like this.

by davidcameron on Jul 20, 2008 10:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

"Bedard deal is done"

How many times did he have to text you that?

by JI on Jul 20, 2008 10:06 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Sweet! Correction retracted.

I knew it was via cell phone, but wasn’t sure whether it was by spoken word or written word. I put way too much effort into being accurate with my blog comments.

Anyway, that was nice of you to bring some good news on Silva Day.

by Teej on Jul 20, 2008 10:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, good

It’ll likely work out for RRS in the long run. At least he’s getting a stable chance to start, and he won’t lose the job in Tacoma: they’re strapped for pitching.

by Gomez on Jul 20, 2008 9:43 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The next few weeks might be tough for Jeff, though.

What does he have to hang on to other than Felix day?

by BrianL on Jul 20, 2008 9:52 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Okay good. I wont say that I am happy just yet. I guess seeing is believing for me.

But if what is said to happen happens then that will be sweet!!
Also glad Jeff took the news well…I think the first post I saw here was one he posted with RR-S in a a blender about good things he liked or somethign like that.
Jeff liked Ben? I’m assuming Broussard? I joined just about a week ago so don’t know these things. I was forced to let go of Ben too…I even have his jersey which I wore today…

by Smith18 on Jul 20, 2008 9:52 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yup, Broussard.

And on behalf of all of us, thank you for picking up that shift key!

by Teej on Jul 20, 2008 9:54 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

That's REALLY cool!! I think I like Jeff haha

Usually I feel like the “odd one out” when talking about my favorite players.

And you are welcome. Shift key is in gear.

by Smith18 on Jul 20, 2008 9:58 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If that really is the plan, I'm all for it.

The kid has shown that he has it in him, and he’s done virtually nothing to dissuade those in charge from giving him a shot. I’d rather see Morrow down there, but this is still a rare wise move. Again, I’m operating under the assumption that the goal is to stretch him out and bring him back up.

My skepticism runs deep, but I don’t think even the Mariners are dumb enough to actually demote RRS right now unless it was to get him some starts, given his recent performances. He’s obviously one of the best guys in that bullpen, and whether you’re looking at skills or results, that has to be plainly apparent to even the simplest of minds. (Though I still think he could develop just find by starting up here. It’s not like we have anything to play for.)

by Teej on Jul 20, 2008 9:52 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Scruffy made a somewhat decent point in regards to starting at Tacoma vs Seattle.

In theory it makes sense to stretch RRS in Tacoma to save the ML bullpen from being taxed as he slowly ups his pitch count. In reality, Silva/Tits aren’t getting any deeper into games, so it’s kind of a moot point. There is some logic there, though.

Of course, the conspiracy theorist would suggest that they want Hyphen to get as much regular work as possible in Tacoma because Jarrod Washburn is going away soon. The more regular starts he gets, the sooner he’ll be available to replace Wash.

by BrianL on Jul 20, 2008 10:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I bet they stretch him out

he starts a couple times, has some beginners jitters and they abandon the whole thing.

by JI on Jul 20, 2008 10:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah I wasn't being literal when I said beginners jitters.

It’s too out of the box for the Mariners. If it doesn’t go perfectly they’ll probably abandon it quickly.

by JI on Jul 20, 2008 11:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I wonder what RRS is going to blog about now

be prepared for a depressing piece…

Speaking of which

Has RRS’s blog been sidebar’d on here yet?

by ThundaPC on Jul 20, 2008 9:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It won't seem that obsessed.

I mean he is the only Mariner with our knowledge with their own blog.
