After being part of the city for 41 years, the Sonics are being stolen away for dubious reasons while every NBA owner and executive allows it to happen, including David Stern, the guy who's supposed to be policing this stuff. I think it's reprehensible to watch someone hijack a franchise away from the people who cared about the team and loved it and nurtured it through the years. It belittles not just the good people of Seattle, but everyone who loves sports and believes it provides a unique and valuable connection for a city, a community, family members and friends.

Bill Simmons

When I think of Seattle, I think of G.P., the Reign Man, Sikma, Lenny Wilkens. The Oklahoma City Sonics? When my son asks me about that, I'll say there's no such thing.

Shaquille O’Neal

Save Our Sonics.

Update:

Commence the wailing and rending of garments. Seattle Supersonics RIP.

Black-death-1_medium

Fuck David Stern, fuck Clay Bennett, fuck Aubrey McClendon, fuck Howard Shultz, fuck Mayor McCheese, fuck Slade "Unclean Hands" Gorton, fuck Ron Sims, fuck Chris Van Dyk, fuck the Washington "Legislature", fuck fuck FUCK YOU ALL.

And FUCK YOU NBA. You'll never get another dime out of me.

The City appears to have sold-out, HARD. What verdict was the judge going to hand down at 4pm today?

1.  If the Sonics ownership found out they were going to win the case, why would they agree to settle for $45m, and potentially up to $75m?

2.  If the City found out they were going to win, why would they settle at all?

This thing smells BAD.

Let's be honest

There’s not a great chance that Pechman will hold the Sonics to the specific performance clause within the lease. All you can hope for now is that in the next trial, the penalty for breaking the contract will be so steep Bennett’s head will explode.

You could have dicussed the history of the team, your opinion on the verdict possiblities, etc.

I'm not sure.

The city of Seattle did do one thing well: assert that the loss of the Sonics would be enormous for the Seattle Center and area economy. If they’re lucky, the damages for breaking the contract early could be enormous.

by BrianL on Jul 2, 2008 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well yeah,

The Sonics tryin to pay just $10 million is ridiculous. It should certainly be higher than that. But I don’t see how there is any way that Pechman will make the Sonics stay if their estimates of losing $60 million the next two years are reasonable (however ridiculous they seem.)

Go through an entire trial, then settle?

Doesn’t make any sense. We’re going to see a verdict.

KJR and multiple other sources saying there is a settlement as well.

Nobody knows what the settlement might be, but we’ll have to see. Sonics and the city both have press conferences scheduled.

AKA "BRO-RAY" according to drunk Graham...

by Thingray on Jul 2, 2008 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good freaking Christ you're right...

Seattle Times:

“A settlement has been reached in the Sonics lawsuit, Seattle City Hall sources confirmed today.

Seattle Deputy Mayor Tim Ceis and City Attorney Tom Carr briefed City Council members on the settlement today, according to sources.

The news comes just hours before U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman had been set to issue her ruling in the lawsuit between the city and the Sonics over the KeyArena lease.

Asked whether a settlement was forthcoming, Seattle City Councilmember Jean Godden said: “It looks like it, but I’m afraid what little I know is sworn to secrecy until after the mayor’s press conference.”

A press conference is scheduled for 5 p.m.”

I’m seriously going to throw up.

by lemonverbena on Jul 2, 2008 3:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No word yet on what exactly that settlement is.

Likely it’s a cash settlement, in which case, Fuck you Mayor.

It may be a cash settlement with promise of a new NBA franchise

Least likely, the NBA has forced Bennett to sell the team.

by BrianL on Jul 2, 2008 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It better be at least an air-tight promise of a new franchise along with a cash settlement.

Otherwise it’s BS. I really doubt the NBA or anyone else has forced Bennett to sell the team.

The NBA is facing a shitload of bad PR over the referee scandal. They may not want to deal with the Seattle mess anymore.

Despite the fact that a new franchise would be Durant-less

this might be the best case scenario for everyone involved.

by acblue on Jul 2, 2008 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

Also agree about the PR. I’ve always wondered how long the NBA could put up with the bad press from this. But if that’s the case, why let it go until the trial is over, and all the dirty laundry has been exposed?

AKA "BRO-RAY" according to drunk Graham...

by Thingray on Jul 2, 2008 3:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

They may have been worried about the Schultz lawsuit as well.

In this scenario, the NBA and Bennett pay a cash settlement and guarantee a new NBA franchise.

In exchange, the city gets Schultz to drop his lawsuit.

by BrianL on Jul 2, 2008 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely.

It’s the only way you’re sure to have a team, and it pretty much guarantees that the money the city gets from the settlement will be spent on Key Arena.

As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.

by acblue on Jul 2, 2008 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be honest,

it’s not THAT important to me that we keep the “Durant Sonics”. I don’t mind a two year break or something like that, but the NBA and the Sonics name and heritage need to stay in Seattle.

This is the big thing for me.

I’m not a huge NBA fan anymore, but the Sonics are a huge part of this city’s sports history. If no one cared anymore it would be one thing, but since that’s not the case, losing them would be criminal.

This is the whole problem

the arena is NOT outdated. it’s 10 freakin’ years old. Renovated to the Sonics’ exact standards. If the standards changed, it shouldn’t be up to the city to make the arena current, because in 10 years it’ll be “outdated” again.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Jul 2, 2008 5:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly!!

If Clay Bennett thinks a ten year old arena is unsuitable for his business, why doesn’t he do what every other fucking business owner does and fix it? Instead, Stern lets him run away so he can soak another city. It totally blows. And now Nickels wants the Wash. leg to soak the local taxpayers so that they can doll up an empty arena.

I go way back with the Sonics, used to listen to Bob Blackburn on the call. But screw the NBA.

Now that Seattle has no winter major sports, I would prefer that they chase the NHL, not NBA.

It's the best of a bad situation

if it went to court and the Sonics lost, they’d leave immediately and Seattle would get nothing. If the Sonics won, they’d stay till 2010, strip the team to its bare bones, and probably leave town as the only franchise in NBA history to only win 5 games. At least this way the city gets SOMETHING.

On top of that,

I remember Stern saying… when this whole thing started… that if the City decided to fight it, tooth-and-nail, in court… The NBA would, in turn, as a fucking CORPORATION, as motivation to see to it that the city NEVER sees another NBA team located there again.

And these guys aren’t being indicted for racketeering…... how?

I'm disgusted at the NBA

the Sonics website makes me physically ill.

Yeah I live in Los Angeles and could hop on the Clipper (lulz) or Lakers band wagon but neither of those feels like real options.

The NBA just died for me today.

Today:
"We are pleased that the Sonics and the City of Seattle have settled their litigation. While the decision has been made to relocate the Sonics to Oklahoma City, the NBA continues to regard Seattle as a first-class NBA city that is capable of serving as home for another NBA team.

David Stern

Early November:

“I’d love to find a way to keep the team there. Because if the team moves, there’s not going to be another team there, not in any conceivable future plan that I could envision, and that would be too bad.”

Interesting

by Last Fan Of Jose Lopez on Jul 2, 2008 5:49 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That sound you hear

is the collective sound of asses being covered. As long as there’s only Key Arena, Seattle will never have another NBA team, that much has been made plain by Stern in the past.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

Of course he's gonna say that

because essentially telling Seattle to go fuck themselves would turn himself into a target. There won’t be another NBA team here barring some sort of miracle.

On this

Ultimately, the person mostly responsible for this is Schultz, for willingly selling to out of town investors stationed in a city that was looking for an NBA team. He should have had the sense to see the writing on the wall, no matter what promises they made about keeping the team in Seattle. I ultimately don’t think he cared who bought the team or what they planned to do with it, as long as got every dollar he could from the highest bidder. This is more his fault than anyone else’s, because he didn’t have to sell to Bennett, but he did anyway.

Once Bennett had the team, this was only a matter of time, no matter what the City did. If they had won the case, this would have just dragged on, cost the City money, and Bennett would’ve lawyered appeals to death until he got what he wanted anyway.

by Gomez on Jul 2, 2008 9:02 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think you can say who is most to blame...

There is so much blame to go around in this situation, it’s unbelievable. Schultz, Stern, Bennett, Mayor Nickels, the Seattle City Council. It’s just a terrible situation, and nobody cares but Sonics fans.

by brayden04 on Jul 2, 2008 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I blame capitalism.

And I’m not being facetious. Schultz just did what any businessman would do – he sold one of his unwanted assets to the highest bidder available. Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing wrong with that, business-wise. There’s nothing anywhere that would or should compel Schultz to sell to a local group – we all wish he would have, sure, but he was under no obligation to do so, and he didn’t.

And yes, I know, “sports is not like any other business”. 100% true, to the fans and the community. But, to the owners, it is EXACTLY like any other business – they all want to maximize their profits any way they can. IF that means screwing over a city and its fan base, that’s what they will do.

by acblue on Jul 2, 2008 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It would be if the NBA were run as a real business

but it’s not. It’s run to ensure its owners make money regardless of what happens. So TV/radio deals will probably be HUGE to offset any potential drop in seat sales from Seattle – but at least for a couple years, OKC will sell out just for the novelty factor alone.

by acblue on Jul 2, 2008 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're right

But the one thing that should’ve compelled Schultz to sell to a local investor is the fact that this city is going to be barely livable for him. Especially his ** son, and yeah, maybe his son didn’t do anything but if I saw either of them on the street I’d use my rather big fist and break their fucking noses. I hope Schultz get’s more shit than he deserves for backstabbing the city that made him and his overpriced fucking company.

The city has screwed the pooch on this one big time.

Not because they didn’t cave and build a new arena, but because they’ve been so goddamned smug about not giving a shit what happened.

If I ever see David Stern or Clay Bennett

I will cut my name right into him.

Being screwed in game seven of the 1993 Western Conference finals, Mount Mutombo, turning the 1996 Chicago Bulls from “the greatest team ever” to “the best Bulls team ever”, the Sonics not only epitomized Seattle sports, but they were the first team I was ever heavily emotionally invested in.

Felix Hernandez is just... too... sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Poll: What should the team in OKC be called?

A) The Sonics
B) Thunder
C) Thunderbirds
D) Twisters
E) Other

I don’t even know where to start, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen two of those names before and they both belong to the city of Seattle.

Well fucking A.

I’d like to give a shout out to all the politicians who acted way too late, too slowly, not at all or actually IMPEDED resolution of this issue before it began gaining steam.

I take comfort in the fact that the vast majority of you just sealed your political doom, because we the voters will not forget.

I’d also like to thank Clay Bennett, Aubrey McClendon and the rest of the cast of Bonanza for not giving a shit about 41 years of Seattle Supersonics history. I am literally ashamed that I share the last name of the majority owner of this once proud franchise. May the Oklahoma City Team-Rapers be the WORST team in the league for many years to come, leaving all of those heavily invested in it’s fortunes financially barren.

David Stern, where would we be without you? You are a class-A felon, this highway robbery could not have occured if it weren’t for your staunch support of your fellow golfing buddy. Your suggestions that the fans here did not care…just went to show that you’d rather spit on a fanbase then help lift it up. I don’t want your empty promises for a “new” basketball team (recycled garbage from Memphis), I want my Seattle Supersonics. But mostly, right now I just want you to go to hell.

Finally, the biggest douchebag of them all. Howard Schultz. I find it difficult to believe that you never met Steve Ballmer or had a discussion with Slade Gordon. You sold the city’s soul to the devil and never blinked twice, and now you’re trying to save face by throwing out this ridiculous lawsuit which can’t be won. Fuck yourself up the ass with mochalatte spraynozzle you stupid prick.

Thank you all, once again, for collectively taking a giant shit on anyone who’s ever had the privelege and blessing of calling themselves a Seattle Supersonics fan. You deserve any and all misery in the years to come, because the good Lord knows you’ve inflicted it.
