Sexson --> New York, Ibanez !--> Arizona

Designated thread to talk about this or go off-topic.

No, Tony Clark to Arizona doesn't mean their search for an Eric Byrnes replacement is through. Tony Clark is not a solution to a starting OF spot.

Possible off-topic suggestions:

-It was cloudy this morning
-Stone's 12th anniversary beer is a Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout
-Seattle still doesn't have an NHL team
-There are too few good lunch spots in downtown Seattle

Since I live in NY

I’m going to watch MANY MANY MANY more Yankee games now, watching Sexson do his ‘thing’ with the Yankees will be amazing…..MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Also, listening to the horrible talk radio on the way to work in the afternoons will be that much more amazing now that Sexson has come on the scene.

I kind of find it hard to deny that a part of me root for the Yankees.

After they signed Matsui (who I like), Damon, Randy, ARod (I’m always going to like him, though this whole Madonna thing makes me think a LOT less of him), and now Sexson. Also if it’s Yankees versus Sox, I’m going to root for the Yanks, because Sox fans are now more annoying than Yankees fans.

The city is going to cave to the NBA demands for arena specifications

And there is noway the league allows the city to build something that gives them competition for the winter dollar since the new-Sonics will already have a likely frosty reception here. The league is all about less crowded markets. The Renton plan was our best shot at the NHL.

by Robert on Jul 17, 2008 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

We didn't have much of a chance at an NHL team anyway

Kansas City is 1st in line, assuming any teams are actively looking to move.

by Gomez on Jul 17, 2008 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Unfortunately :(

I feel like I’d be a much bigger hockey fan if there was NHL up here. When I lived in Florida, I didn’t understand why Florida needed not one, but two pro hockey teams. But then again there are a lot of people who retire from northern states like New York, or Canada. More obscure places I don’t understand even today, like North Carolina, or Nashville. The Nashville Preds have to be the NHL equivalent to the New Orleans Hornets. If any team were to move here, I would bank my hopes of them doing so, unfortunately they have a shiny new arena, so chances of that are slim.

by Gomez on Jul 17, 2008 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

I know Vancouver isn’t that far away, but I don’t think having to cross a border into another country makes it a hometown team. I guess we just have to hope that the NHL some how tied in with the stadium deal if one gets passed next year.

I also would post/read the NHL thread over on NeoGAF from time to time. Aside from that I dunno. The last time I got into hockey was back in elementary school because I had a friend who was a Rangers fan and he got me excited about the Rangers (they won the cup that year and I listened to it on the radio).

Please explain how, because I don't see it.

I saw Halladay get 10 straight grounders to 2B, and you know what people did? They got up and went to the concessions.

by Faux on Jul 17, 2008 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I still don't see the giant difference.

In football, part of the game is running down the clock and play defense as well (to take it to a different sport). Teams that excel at that win. Same with hockey. If it works and it’s legal, why not use it. You’re there to win, not to entertain people.

You guys hate them so much, but they got rid of that style of play indefinitely with the rules change they caused.

Just like the ruling that you have to pitch w/i a certain time they instituted this year. It was to combat people like Traschel.

by Faux on Jul 17, 2008 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

One, not anymore.

Hence the rules changes.

Two, there are teams just based around running and defense in the NFL. That doesn’t seem so different to me.

by Faux on Jul 17, 2008 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know that much about hockey either.

But I don’t see why the giant amount of hatred towards a team that didn’t do anything but follow the rules. It’s not like they were screwing other teams or cheating. Other teams copied them, and those other teams started winning as well.

Then Toronto swooped in and changed the rules, and under the new rules that style of play couldn’t win anymore. So they moved on to other styles that weren’t as effective.

by Faux on Jul 17, 2008 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

They did something, it worked.

People like to bitch a lot, but everyone else copied it until the rules changed, didn’t they?

by Faux on Jul 17, 2008 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

It's boring offense designed to slow down the game

Felix and Fausto are performing a defensive role.

by Gomez on Jul 17, 2008 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess I just don't see the problem.

They found a loophole and exploited it to win until the powers that be closed it.

by Faux on Jul 17, 2008 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you're upset at the wrong people.

Sean Avery sat in front of Brodeur in the playoffs and blocked his vision by acting like a fucking dope. In between that game and the next, they added that to the things that construe goalie interference.

by Faux on Jul 17, 2008 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry, cut myself off.

They could have changed that rule long before they did.

It’s not the Devils fault for that.

by Faux on Jul 17, 2008 1:04 PM PDT up reply actions

The problem here seems to be a disagreement over whether the ends justify the means.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you seem believe that the goal of winning justifies any strategy you use to achieve it (assuming it’s within the rules), while the rest of us believe that a team can be judged on the manner in which it tried to win as well as whether or not it did. Is that a fair statement?

by ningwers on Jul 17, 2008 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Sort of.

I believe that any loophole should be exploited by a team to win. If it meant standing on the mound for 3 hours, or going out and arguing until the snow got deep enough for the game to get called before it was official, or by playing a hold offense.

I also believe that loopholes should be closed immediately by whatever powers exist, without exception. Hockey can, and does, change its rules on the fly (see my Avery example above). How they couldn’t have done so immediately, or during the mid-season break (or hell, after the first season that had this problem), is more erroneous than the teams that actually do the thing I dislike.

To equate this to baseball, I was pissed when the salaries skyrocketed and NYY and other large markets started buying out other teams star talent. I was slightly pissed at NYY, but more pissed at the MLB FO. When they started the supplemental pick system, that allayed a lot of my rage (not far enough, but they’re moving in the right direction at least). Same thing with the RuleV draft and some FOs hogging all the minor league talent.

Now, I just hate the Yankees because I largely hate most things NY based, and because I can. Not really because of the salaries anymore.

I hope I’ve clarified myself a little bit.

by Faux on Jul 17, 2008 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

It's like if there was a loophole in the MLB rule books that stated games lasting more than five hours

are immediately ended if official and every time the Ms had the lead after 5 innings the Ms pitcher would go out there and just hold the ball for the next 3 hours until the ump was forced to end the game.

by Matthew on Jul 17, 2008 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

And you know what, that would last a week before just about everyone would vote to change it.

Toronto could have change that rule after the first season, or pushed it through midseason. But you’re mad at the team, not the people in charge of the rules.

In other words, don’t hate the player, hate the game.

That's a valid option, and you're perfectly entitled to it.

I take that road quite a bit myself (see my response above to nwingers).

I’m just happy when people realize that they were allowed to do that, so they did, and that the party allowing it to happen deserves the blame as well.

Too many put the blame solely on the shoulders of the team/person involved, when it’s really also an administrative problem (see Bonds, Barry or the Chacon/Wade saga).
