Your rent must be horrid

I live in Mar Vista but I’ve looked over at SM. Expensive place to live.

The Kangaroo and Kiwi Pub

will never be the same after this. Now if they could only get some beer from Papua New Guinea…

It's never been the same

since Lauren Jackson/Sue Bird started going there.
It’s PACKED.

Don't think I've ever been to Al's

What’s on tap?

Mind you, I live in T-town, so if I’m going out in Seattle, it’s generally with others, meaning I have less control over where we go. But still – another nice place to add to the rotation wouldn’t be bad.

I’m still all about the Twilight Exit.

Hey, have you tried the Red Hot yet?

I have yet to find a better beer selection down your way.

by acblue on Jul 14, 2008 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but just quickly - I'd already had a pint at the Crown Bar down the street

I really have to start going there more regularly. Haven’t even had a hot dog!

As for beer selection in Tacoma, my local has 64 beers on tap. It’s a trade-off for atmosphere, but hey, 64 is 64.
I like the beers at the Parkway, though they’re a bit tilted towards IPAs, which I don’t like as much as other people. They don’t have a ton of beers, but they’re well selected (and if they’d throw in a few more Scotch ales or browns, I’d like it even more).
Tacoma really does have a number of really nice bars if you just want to drink and hang out with friends. It’s noticeably lacking in the bars-with-amazing-juke or bars-with-live-music categories (live music that I would want to go to), but it’s trying.

I still say PDX wins for most kick-ass bars per capita.

Well, the Red Hot doesn't have a ton of taps.

They rotate a whole lot, which is good for trying new stuff, but bad if you find a beer you really like only to find it gone one day. From my (admittedly limited) experience, I would have to agree about the lack of everything-you’re-looking-for kinds of placed.

There are bars for beer geeks that also draw some really lame people, bars with great atmosphere and staff but not a whole lot of beer to choose from (Monsoon Room springs immediately to mind) and not a lot of music-centric places at all, which sucks a lot. There’s Hell’s Kitchen, but that’s a venue that serves booze, not a bar that has bands, and there’s the Java Jive, which is awesome, but a city the size of Tacoma should have more than one cool dive bar with rock shows.

by acblue on Jul 14, 2008 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, and it used to. Why it doesn't any more is a depressing mystery.

And why can cities like Bellingham now book more shows from touring indie bands than T-town? It’s… not good.

But hey, the Monsoon Room IS trying, and I really like it (wouldn’t hurt if it was bigger, but that might impact the ol’ atmosphere). I toyed with the idea of DJing there, but I don’t want to work – I just want to watch others work.

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve thought of opening a bar in T-town, modeled off of some favorites elsewhere. But I’m lazy and lack capital….

Still, I really do like a number of bars in Tacoma – the variety is good, the beer selection is excellent, and I’ll just accept that they don’t have My Perfect Bar….yet.

I miss Archer Ale House in Fairhaven/B-Ham...

I’m not sure if that place is even still the same or not, but when I was up there they had such a nice selection of belgians on tap, along with a very adequate supply of bottles. But, well, that was over 10 years ago now, so…

I played over 20 shows at that place.

Damn that feels like so long ago.

I miss playing Bellingham. One of the few spots around here that still had good crowd energy.

by Sec 108 on Jul 15, 2008 10:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Getting a show there is not easy.

Which sucks, because I’d love to play down there, but there are a lot of bands looking for shows and one place for non-touring bands to play.

by acblue on Jul 14, 2008 10:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I'd imagine you could get a show

at the Viaduct. That’s all ages, however.

Can you really not get a show at the Java Jive? I know they don’t do a ton of concerts, but who knows… worth a try.

Your basic selection

I know they have Rainier, Manny’s and Mac/Jack… but I can’t recall the name of their IPA and the other brews (there’s at least 1-2 others on tap)... but they’re to my knowledge not your run of the mill tap beer. Now you’ve given me an excuse to go back this weekend :P
