File this one under "Bad For Baseball":

The Jays will be without young power pitcher Dustin McGowan for at least a month after an MRI scan taken yesterday revealed a tear in his rotator cuff.

"The severity of it we won't really know until (the pain) calms down," GM J.P. Ricciardi said after last night's win over the Orioles.

McGowan is scheduled for a consultation with renowned surgeon Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the same physician who performed closer B.J. Ryan's Tommy John surgery last year. McGowan was pulled early from Tuesday's start after experiencing a recurrence of shoulder soreness.

Ricciardi said the prognosis is still unknown, but that the club is anticipating that McGowan will be out "probably longer than four weeks."

It's not fair that talents like McGowan get themselves hurt while a giant pile of crap like Livan Hernandez is blessed with unfathomable durability. That isn't in the best interests of anyone. Not even Livan Hernandez. The more often Livan Hernandez pitches, the more often Livan Hernandez totally sucks. Livan Hernandez probably doesn't enjoy it when he totally sucks. But he can't stop, because he never gets injured, and the Twins are paying him to pitch, and he has an obligation to the team and ahhhhh curse you, Scrappy. Please just leave the Rays the hell alone.

By the way, Tuglett's up, along with the worthless Jared Wells, as Erik Bedard's predictably going on the DL. He'll be back for the first game of the Boston series after the break, leaving the team about a week and a half to trade him if they so desire (which I don't really encourage, but whatever). In the meantime, enjoy your rest, dude. You need it.

Shame on all of you for thinking Richie was DFA'd for his poor performance.
But when I spoke to manager Jim Riggleman moments ago, he told me that the “body language” Sexson displayed yesterday when kept out of the lineup was what ultimately led him not to oppose the release.

“If I felt that he could handle the next couple of weeks with less playing time, I would not have agreed with the move,’’ Riggleman told me. “But yesterday, his body language was such that he looked like he wasn’t going to handle it at all.’ ~Per Baker’

It was his body language, dammit!

by BrianL on Jul 10, 2008 12:24 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well, Riggleman kind of redeems himself.
“The manager’s got to be able to make a lineup out without feeling somebody’s going to be unhappy,’’ he said, “If we sat Willie Bloomquist and he was unhappy, we could handle it. But if one of your big boys is down in the dumps, that can take others down.’‘

by BrianL on Jul 10, 2008 12:26 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What he was thinking:

If we sat Willie Bloomquist and he was unhappy, we’d all have a good laugh at him…

by Bearskin Rugburn on Jul 10, 2008 12:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just goes to show you that a manager can take something and make anything out of it.

People get credited all the time for they passion, and the fact that they never take days off and always want to play. If Sexson was hitting 280/400/550 right now and he had bad body language due to him being sat out for a day, they’d say look at that drive, he just loves the game of baseball.

by LantermanC on Jul 10, 2008 1:43 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh Shit.

Ichiro isn’t getting the day off because he hasn’t had a day off in 126 games, he’s out because of a tight hammy.

by BrianL on Jul 10, 2008 12:32 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Basically, contrary to popular stupid belief,

Ichiro is awesome and loves the game, so the manager made up a non-serious injury to get him the day off.

No, Sandler was good

Wes Anderson’s fans are . . . dedicated.

I don’t hate his stuff, but I’m never that impressed.

by Teej on Jul 10, 2008 2:22 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wes Anderson movies are built on a house of cards.

Everyone loves his movies because of the dialogue, but no actual people talk the way people in his movies talk. That’s not in and of itself a bad thing, but they’re carefully crafted to appeal to people who like to think they’re as witty and insightful as the people in his movies.

He’s talented in the aesthetic aspects of filmmaking, but my God are his movies contrived and vapid and boring as all hell.

by acblue on Jul 10, 2008 2:29 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

His soundtracks are evil. They plunder my favorite semi-obscure classic rock songs and cause people to think I'm a Wes Anderson fan.

That fucker ruined “Ooh La La” as the song I put at the end of all my mix CDs. And I’ll never forgive him for it.

That said, I adore Rushmore and Tenenbaums, and really dislike everything else he’s done. He has two FANTASTIC movies and a lot of complete trash.

I will agree with your point,

and I think that’s sort of what made Arrested Development so likable. Sure the characters were off the wall insane, but at least the dialogue made them seem like realistic crazy people

by Last Fan Of Jose Lopez on Jul 10, 2008 2:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And it was actually funny.

As opposed to “wow, that’s a really obscure reference and I don’t get it, but it’s supposed to be funny so I’ll laugh anyways.”

The second half of the first season (minus Some Enchanted Evening) and the majority of the second season is some of the best TV ever written.

His supporting cast makes all the difference.

Talladega Nights? Awesome. Co-stars? John C. Reilly, Sascha Baron Cohen.
Anchorman? Insanely awesome. Co-stars? Steve Carell, Paul Rudd.

Blades of Glory? Fucking awful. Co-star? Jon Heder.
Semi-Pro? Lame. Co-star? A horribly mis-cast Woody Harrelson.

He’s fine when used properly, he just needs good people around him to make him seem like less of a cartoon character.
