Pentland fired
The Seattle Mariners have just fired Jeff Pentland, prior to today's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Per Seattle-PI
Pentland was the only coaching holdover from the original '07 coaching staff. This could be the first of multiple personnel and roster moves, according to the PI. Former hitting coach and roving instructor Lee Elia has been hired to assume Pentland's role with the club.
This may also mean we will never get to see the Pepe/Jose Vidro commercial again, which is a shame because I generally found Bill Bavasi to be amusing in that spot.

We need to get that hitting coach
who turned Sammy Sosa from a hacker into a Hall of Famer.
Oh, you mean that guy who coached the 2005 Kansas City Royals?
Man, that coach sure turned that team around.
Bring back Paul Molitor!
"Dragons" are actually dinosaurs hunted to extinction by man in the Middle Ages. Check your Chinese calendars people.
Fianlly!!!
This is the the kind of move that can finally get this team going again!

I really hope this is just the beginning of the process.
The earlier they admit this is a lost season, the better off the organization is.
I like midgets more than I should.
I guess McLaren's remarks about
“getting after it” meant he looked at Pentland during the next four games, and found that Pentland “wasn’t getting after it.” So, unlike the players, a replacement is found.
After all, the contingency clause in each hitter’s contract states that the team will have a hitting coach that creates a result for that hitter equal to, or better than, prior results. ;^`d
It’s lucky that the M’s were “deep” at the replacement coach level.

I figure the signs will be:
- when Lee Elia becomes the interim manager
- when Sexson and Vidro are both DFA
- when Clement is called up again
- when one of the current occupants of the rotation are voted off the island for either Morrow or Dickey (ideally, BOTH Beluga Tits AND Washburn
My guess is that the front office won’t effectively give up the ghost before late June, and will use any hot or lukewarm streak to validate holding off.

My bet would be on Riggleman or Perlazzo managing.

Like it's going to matter, but...
Elia’s a better quote and has AW WASN’T LOU AWESOME memories attached to him as well.
The depths this club goes to to milk 1995 and 2001 for all they can get…

Perrlazzo waived Griffey in.
Also, according to Baker, Elia doesn’t want to be in baseball full time.
by JI on Jun 9, 2008 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions
An interim manager isn't more "full time" than a hitting coach, really.
And sure, they could hire Perlozzo- but the thing is the odds are very high that EVERYONE gets tossed out the Kremlin window come October from the GM level down. So why not have a guy who’s your interim manager who’s just plain not interested in doing it past October? I doubt that describes Perlozzo, but it probably describes Elia.

Because they did a bang-up job with the Orioles?

Mazzone hasn't done much with the O's,
yet Atlanta’s pitching still seems to be pretty good.
I like midgets more than I should.
I'll put it this way:
General managers pick their own field managers, sometimes later, sometimes sooner. See: Bavasi/Melvin.
I figure the odds are fairly high that there’s an extensive housecleaning in the Mariner organization. If so, why would you want our new GM picking through retreads from the previous administration who have no track record of distinction in previous stints in MLB? Hell, at least Melvin had 2003 to his credit.
by eponymous_coward on Jun 9, 2008 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions
and that's why...
you make Elia the “interim” manager- it’s fairly likely it’s fine by him, and he clears the deck for the next GM to make a managerial choice without an “incumbent” (even with an “interim” title ala Mac last year).
Of course, this being the Mariners, this is likely too logical for them, but hey…

Same goes for
(Glavine+Maddux+Smoltz) + Mazzone = Good. I read a book called the economics of baseball, and a chapter covered how Leo Mazzone was able to make these guys very good, but he analyzed after how Tom Glavine went to the Mets, he wasn’t as good, so he stated there was a possibility that there was some sort of exercise or something that Mazzone made them do routinely which made them good, which for some reason they could only do under his presence.

and will use any hot or lukewarm streak to validate holding off.
I would be shocked if we scored more than 6 runs this series.

Way to make the players accountable.
The bullpen catcher and back up Moose better watch their respective backs.
And if one of the dancing groundskeepers misses a step
they’re gonna be shown the door. That’s the kind of thing that will not be tolerated.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Now they're attempting to speed up the game
and, ironically, groundskeepers and their “grooming” were introduced decades ago to slow down the game, allowing more time between innings to sell concessions!

He's been solidly on point the last few weeks.
He’s a smart guy, he just needs to play to his strengths a bit more. The crack about needing some extra rest because of the heat and humidity in Toronto was hilarious.

Time for "trolling through Baker's comments for unintentional comedy gold"
The TItanic was a one hit wonder for many reasons. Its more than obvious u could never make a sequal to this movie. Geoff take note of this please.

Here is my problem with this team. Every player down the line is a “free swinger” except for maybe Lopez, Vidro and maybe Reed…
This team is flawed because of the tyoes of players it has. It needs three hitters to hit in the 3-4 spot and a great #9 hitter that get’s on base ahead of Ichiro and wreaks havoc by stealing bases and taking lots of pitches….a “pesky” little guy that is hard to get out (think Eckstein). The 3 hitter must be left handed with power and a good eye.
Right now, Raul is your #3 hitter when he would normally hit 7th in a good line-up. Same with Beltre, Sexson, or Vidro.
– usesomelogic (very ironically named)
this team is gasey. This team has more gas than thin turbos with o2 on the fast and the furious.

I’m kinda bored
The image that belatedly popped into my head is
the Simpson’s original Thanksgiving episode where Bart imagines coming back into the house and the whole family gangs up on him. Instead of Maggie telling Bart it his fault she can’t talk, I picture Sexson telling Pentland “It’s your fault I can’t hit”.
Just the bad defense makes the pitching look bad
right?

The pitching has been below-average
but the defense has made it look awful.

This is just what our shitty team defense needs
a new hitting coach
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.
Rotoworld is one fire!
Miguel Cairo bunted a bases-loaded safety squeeze to lead the Mariners over the Blue Jays on Monday night.
Behold the power of new hitting coach Lee Elia. Clearly he’ll be able to harness the majestic Miguel Cairo (.218/.279/.255), and the Mariners will ride his offensive prowess straight to the World Series.
I hate baseball.
Dickey Time did an impromptu faux-eulogy for Pentland after the game
He acted like the guys were trying to win one for him. Too bad they couldn’t win the games that mattered for him while he was still employed :P
Also, this is only the 3rd game the Mariners have won this year with 3 runs or less.
