Nick Czyz and Andres Esquibel drafted by Seattle Mariners
I have been covering the University of Kansas baseball team at Rock Chalk Talk for the last few years. Today the Seattle Mariners drafted a pair of Jayhawk pitchers. I thought I would pass on links to stories about these two pitchers posted at Rock Chalk Talk.
Andres Esquibel, RHP, 38th Round
Esquibel has exhausted his college eligablity, Czyz is only a junior. I think there is a good chance Czyz will return to KU next year. Esquibel is a real bulldog who keeps his team in the ball game. He pitched eight innings of one hit baseball earlier this year vs. Texas Tech. He still has some potential for further development.

Interesting ...
When I lived in CA the last name for one of the secretaries was “Czyz”. Many of the family members were avid baseball fans and many of the boys were baseball players. I wonder if there are any familiar connections.
Incidentally, she pronounced her name “Sizz”.

That is very possible.
Nick’s older brother, Don, won the NCAA Stopper of the Year award in 2006. Don is pretty much a recent legend in KU baseball. Career saves leader with just an amazing overall career. He came to KU as a walk-on and left on All American lists. He is in the Marlin’s organization now.
Nick is the the youngest son. The Czyz’, Beau and JoAnn, have been coming to KU games to watch their sons for six years now. Good people. They come from up-state New York originally but I would not be too surprised if they have family in California.

No problem,
I’ve been following the KU baseball team for four years now and go to most home games. I hate to see the players move on. One of the bitter sweet aspects of college sports.
