6/6: Open Game Thread
Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox, Jun 6, 2008 4:05 PM PDT
Boston's .357 overall OBP is eight points higher than Seattle's team leader. They've won 13 consecutive games at home against teams with a weighted winning percentage of .510, and this weekend they get three against arguably the worst team in baseball, a team that will be starting a 22 year old disappointment and a pair of throwaway stiffs. Even without David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury (tonight), the carnage potential here is through the roof. On the one hand, winning in Boston is a great way to make everyone feel better, but on the other, continued losing in this context is a great way to make sure several names don't survive the month, and with Boston and Toronto coming up next, things don't look good. For better or worse, John McLaren should probably consider himself lucky if he makes it to the Washington/Florida homestand.

Quick question for someone more knowledgable than me:
Why do Josh Kalk’s pitch f/x cards always have more movement for fastballs than sliders? It seems as though the fastballs get a ton of vertical and horizontal movement, more than I would expect.
by Last Fan Of Jose Lopez on Jun 6, 2008 3:12 PM PDT reply actions
Vertical movement is the opposite of what you'd think it is
The lesser the number, the more it moves. That movement (z) you see is relative to a ball thrown with no spin. Fastballs tend to be ~9-13, which is about the range of a pitch that doesn’t have much drop. Curves are below zero because they drop a ton. Sliders collect around zero because they’re in between.

Boston/Tampa Suspensions handed out
Crisp 7 games
Lester 5 games
Casey 3 games
Crisp and Lester to start suspensions today unless appealed. Casey on the 14th
Tampa-
Shields 6 games
Gomes 5 games
Jackson 5 games
Crawford 4 games
Iwamura 3 games
Midnight Baseball - No Lights - Only in Alaska!
just saw that
seems a bit steep. I imagine they’ll all be challenged and get two days knocked off. And that’s not even bad for the pitchers, who’ll only be missing a start each.

what did Sexson end up with for his charge to the mound?
5 games? 7 for punches thrown doesn’t seem steep for Crisp.
Midnight Baseball - No Lights - Only in Alaska!
he threw his helmet
5-game suspension for a “crime of passion” is pretty substantial (premeditated cheating tends to be longer)
Sexson threw a helmet though. Figure the whole
“weapon” aspect of it was what got him 5 games in the first place.

Well, I'm not sure how much "top speed" really matters in baseball
Consider how long a base runner or an outfielder has to run to get to a ball. It’s far more important that the player gets good reads/jumps and has excellent acceleration than has a high maximum velocity.
