Celtics vs Lakers (game thread?)

Don't know if anyone else is interested, but if any one wants to chat about the NBA finals game one, here's a spot for you.

I'm rooting for the Celtics, but I'm really not sure I like their odds of winning. KG and Ray Allen deserve a championship IMHO (especially KG).

On a related note, James Taylor doing an acoustic guitar version of the national anthem? That seems like a reach to me, and I like James Taylor.

I'm here and rooting for the C's

because I despise the Lakers. Absolutely despise them.

I was going to ask.

I thought you were a California boy.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm probably a California kid for life now because I love SD and OC too much

but there’s no way I’ll ever give up the Seattle teams, ever.

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 6:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I admire your dedication.

Especially with how the M’s and Sonics have been lately.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Meh. I grew up with 1995

After that there’s no way you can give up the Mariners.

I was on the fence with the Sonics until the lottery – I just happened to watch with my roommate who’s from Portland. When the Hawks logo came out of that #3 envelope… I jumped so high I hit my head on the ceiling

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I remember watching the Sonics win the championship,

so I’ve been suffering with Seattle teams for quite some time.

I like midgets more than I should.

Solid opening montage from ABC

HORRIBLE speech from Doc Rivers

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 6:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Something about "this is where we expected to be. But not where we want to be. Uh... I'm out of words"

in a monotone. It was not inspiring. Thankfully for Doc, he has KG to scream and yell a lot and get his teammates fired up.

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 6:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Doc doesn't exactly impress me.

I just hope he stays out of the way and doesn’t screw anything up.

I like midgets more than I should.

So do you let Kobe get his,

or do you do everything you can to stop him and make someone else beat you?

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:11 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Usually, let the star get his...

but Kobe’s a different animal. I’d say let him get his… but make him shoot.

Also, Doc has Ray Allen on Kobe. This might get bad early

Ben Affleck - Jack Nicholson

Tough call.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is it?

Nicholson has at least been awesome in a few movies.

by acblue on Jun 5, 2008 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ben Affleck is friends with Matt Damon

so by the transitive property he’s got a lot going for him, too.

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

When did Matt Damno become awesome?

That’s a serious question. I used to fucking HATE that guy, and then all a sudden, I found myself defending him to people.

-aaron c.

by acblue on Jun 5, 2008 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good Will Hunting and Rounders

If he never makes another movie, he goes down as awesome just for those two.

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't stand Good Will Hunting.

It’s actually one of the reasons I hated him for so long.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So much for hoping that he would just get out of the way and put a decent lineup out there

he’s got his worst defensive rotation player on the best offensive player since MJ

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

For the non-hoops fans who might be reading this

Ray Allen on Kobe 1 on 1 is basically the equivalent of putting Raul Ibanez in centerfield with Jarrod Washburn pitching

You nailed it.

I like midgets more than I should.

Makes you wonder how "professionals" can miss things that are so obvious.

On the other hand GO KG!!!

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Like I predicted last week

Pau Gasol has no chance against KG when he’s aggressive on the block

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 6:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't think of anyone that really does.

If KG is aggressive, he pretty much gets what he wants.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, some of the bigger guys can push him around a bit

but Gasol doesn’t have that kind of bulk, and KG is just way too athletic for him

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd... probably be OK with this too

but I would like to see Ray, Pierce and KG win a title. Of the active players without one, I think those three deserve it the most

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ray Allen may have lost a step

but his jumper is still absolutely gorgeous

KG is scary intense

I would not want to be in the same room as that guy after a loss.

WHAT ON EARTH???

Sam Cassell has decided he’s just not going to pass… and for some reason Doc hasn’t pulled him yet

I'm gonna be bailing out as soon as my bank transactions finish transmitting.

I’ve already been in the office for almost 12 hours, I think that’s enough.

Okay Sam.

As long as you keep hitting them, that’s fine. But don’t let the rest of the team fall asleep.

That's better Sam.

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Why do you look so nervous, Doc?

It’s not like you have any direct impact on the outcome of this game.

Oh wait…

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He really scares me.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 5, 2008 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm terrified of this

They’re not running an offense either… or if they are, it’s another strike against Doc, since the offense has been “let Sam Cassell do whatever the hell he pleases”

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what happens when you put Sam in the game.

He’s been that way his whole career.

Three on Pierce

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 7:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Sorry man, didn;t mean to bail on you, I had to shut down my office.

I’m heading out to try to catch some of the game on TV instead of radio. Plus I want to get the hell out of this office before I go insane.

I like midgets more than I should.

OK, so I am discussing with my friend

Paul Pierce has a legitimate case as one of the five best players in the NBA.

Agree/disagree

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 7:58 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

Guys who are maybe better

1. Kobe
2. Dirk
3. Timmay
4. Dwade
5. Lebron
6. Arenas(?)
7. KG

I don’t really know though and I think I’m being swayed mostly by hype

by Last Fan Of Jose Lopez on Jun 5, 2008 8:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

Just on the basis that, when I think elite players, Pierce doesn’t come to mind. This is who comes to mind:

Bryant
D. Howard
D-WAYNE Wade
James
CP3
KG

by oreotree on Jun 5, 2008 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would've included Timmay

But I realized he currently isn’t one of the top 5 because its more that the Duncan/Ginobili/Parker three-headed monster is much much MUCH more

by oreotree on Jun 5, 2008 8:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't have D-wade on this list

despite him being one of my favorite players. He just hasn’t progressed overall as a player.

The only two I had unequivocally above Pierce were Bryant and Duncan. For our criterion, we said that a player had to be “clearly superior overall as a basketball player” which is why we didn’t count Wade, LBJ or CP3 – those guys are simply not the type that I considered “absolute no brainers” above Pierce

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

Not LBJ at least? I realize he has all the hype, but he has taken his team further than Pierce. CP3 is probably a little early, yes, but he will be better. Wade’s hard to judge from this year just because it was so shitty that everyone gave up.

by oreotree on Jun 5, 2008 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just think Wade has regressed as a player, injuries or no

and I think the thing with both LeBron and Wade is that they haven’t developed as shooters.

CP3 was very close, but I have concerns about his on ball defense – for me, Pierce’s D is a HUGE plus for him. No question that Paul has the potential – I think he’s very close even as a below average—> on ball defender. Playing the passing lanes makes it up a bit for him but…

LeBron just hasn’t really progressed. He’s a great player for sure, and I’d probably take him over Pierce… but I’d have to think about it first.

by seattlebruin on Jun 5, 2008 8:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can't argue much about this year

Most of this is off the gut. I don’t think Wade regressed, but his supporting cast sure did, and I think his stock just regressed back towards its true value, since now he is the unequivocal star. LBJ I just think that, even without the outside shot, he’s done alot for the Cavs. Pierce just never seemed to be able to take his team far, regardless of talent. I think that ability to advance in the postseason makes up a huge portion of a player’s skill.

by oreotree on Jun 5, 2008 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Now if this was the Eastern Conference Finals

It’d be 55-52. I’m glad that’s over with.

Game Celtics

I still haven’t figured out who to root for

by oreotree on Jun 5, 2008 8:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, Kobe is a giant d-bag.

Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce are all veterans who have spent the vast majority of their careers with losing teams. I’m rooting for the Celtics based on that alone.

Okay, three days, but still.

by Thingray on Jun 6, 2008 10:11 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Which is completely insane given that the teams don't have to travel between games one and two

You’d think they could go to a more fair 2-2-1-1-1 format with this much time between games…

Oh well, at least it gives Pierce some time to rest that knee

by seattlebruin on Jun 6, 2008 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know,

he played pretty well with it banged up, why change what’s working? I’m so happy I escaped the office in time to catch most of the second half on TV. Although I’m not as happy with the amount of booze I consumed and how it made me feel this morning. Not a monster hangover or anything, btu I can tell I had a few too many beers.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 6, 2008 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Meh... I sprained my knee pretty good last year playing ball

hurt like hell at first, but I was able to play the rest of the day on it.

That night though, it swelled up like crazy and I could barely walk for a week. Although I’m sure Paul Pierce has much better medical assistance available to him than I did…

by seattlebruin on Jun 6, 2008 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's my fear is that it will actually get worse before it gets better. They have great doctors though.

I did the same thing with my ankle. Hurt it in the first game of a softball double header, played through the pain to finish both games, then couldn’t even stand up the next morning. I ended up missing three weeks of work (I was doing construction at the time).
