Amateur Draft Open Thread, Part 2

Since drafting is pretty much the only thing we do well I'm not yet going to let myself get too pessimistic, but I'm 100% confident that we'll be able to screw this up somehow if we so desire.

They were going to either take a HS pitcher

or a really athletic dude. But HS pitcher was the more likely one.

Draft tracker

is talking about him as a pitcher, saying he went from interesting 2 way guy to upper echelon pitching prospect. Almost nothing is said about him as a 3B.

Yeah, it drew some comment from the analysts

When your two best players from a draft are Rene Rivera and Bobby Livingston, you’ve had a bad draft.

Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.

by BrettJMiller on Jun 5, 2008 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't exactly say he's an excellent pick

He’s played 0 NFL games, we’ll need to check back in a few years to see how it all played out. Just seems like we had some other needs.

by Boydo on Jun 5, 2008 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

You can't evaluate picks years after they've been made. That's not fair.

It’s just like even if the Bedard trade works out for the M’s, it’s still a bad trade. You have to evaluate based on how it was at the time. If Bedard wins eight Cy Youngs and 6 world series MVPs with us, and Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Tillman, Butler, and Mickolio die in a freak boating accident tomorrow, the trade was still a bad idea.

If Lawrence Jackson busts, the pick was still a really good idea.

Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.

by BrettJMiller on Jun 5, 2008 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

If he busts, how was it a good idea?

Fair or not, the success of a Draft Pick is almost entirely based on what they accomplish as a pro. Why is New England heralded for drafing Tom Brady in the 7th round? It’s not because it was just a good idea, it’s because they found superstar talent that late in Draft.

by Boydo on Jun 5, 2008 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

One of our needs was DE depth.

That pick addressed that problem nicely.

by BrianL on Jun 5, 2008 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

What is great about College Football and Basketball drafts

is that the players can have an immediate impact on the team the following year. You don’t need to wait 2-3 years to evaluate how well a team drafted in those sports.

by Wilder. on Jun 5, 2008 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

DE is a position where you can never have too much depth. WR is more fungible

Plus you don’t need to be an elite receiver to function in the West Coast Offense. Really right now WR is the Hawks only weakness and the rest of the team is awesome. I think the Hawks are sitting pretty for 2008

Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.

by BrettJMiller on Jun 5, 2008 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree about DE depth

But is Wahle going to shore up our line? Seems like we could have used another solid O-Lineman. I also think we needed a DT like Kentwan Balmer before we needed a DE. Run Defense absolutely killed us last year, who knows if Tubbs is even going to play in the NFL again? With a mid-sized MLB like Lofa too, we can really get punished up the middle if we don’t have the run-stoppers we need.

by Boydo on Jun 5, 2008 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Wahle is better than most people think.

I think you need to read more Field Gulls

And our run defense was pretty damn good last year, we gave up 100 yards rushing like four times all season.

Yesterday's Pants

by BrettJMiller on Jun 5, 2008 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions
