McLaren sounds about done..
This may just be emotion spilling over from another rough series where nothing went right (funny how no talent leads to nothing going right..) but, this is from Baker's blog ..
"We're playing our (bleep) off every day and got nothing to show for it. I'm tired of (bleeping) losing, I'm tired of getting my (bleep) beat, and so have those guys. We gotta change this (bleeping bleep) around and get after it. And only we can do it. The fans are (bleeped) off, and I'm (bleeped) off, and the players are (bleeped) off. And that's the way it is. There's no (bleeping) easy way out of this, can't feel sorry for ourself, we gotta (bleeping) buckle it up and get after it. I'm tired of (bleep) losing this, (bleeping) every night we bust our (bleep). It's gotta be a total team (bleeping) effort to turn this thing around, and that's it."
How much more of this can possibly be had? Half empty, quarter full ballparks seem to be the first sign, but cmon..
Maybe Bavasi will be out on his ass after this weekend's Ammy draft and Mac can follow.. one can dream right?

If I were Mac, I'd quit.
Not for any professional baseball reason, but just to get out of a bad job. The FO isn’t going to do anything to make his job easier, the fans hate him. Might as well just cut your losses and take an early retirement.
Settling down on a nice beachfront house will probably be better for his longterm health than trying to manage this disaster of a team.

The Mariners should go out and find the youngest, smartest, most energetic
new manager they can find to replace McLaren. Someone youthful with energy could get that spark back and light a fire under a team that is really not all that bad, and make them competative again. A new young manager could demand the best effort the players have to offer and restore confidence in an already perfectly capable team.

Damn right
The lame manager is the least of this organization’s problems. Bringing in a new manager who stumbles upon a lucky hot streak would just allow for this farce to continue.
My whole perspective has changed on this season. For me, it’s like they’re winning when they lose. I’m following the standings like it’s a playoff chase, rooting for Colorado and Kansas City to win every night.

Presented for review
My list of managers I never want to hear associated with the phrase M’s managerial vacancy>
Lou Piniella – it’s over. It’s not 1995 any more. Move on.
Bobby Valentine – never going to happen. He’s happy where he is, he’s a rock star in Japan and he’s not going to leave.
Buck Showalter – not a good manager
Any A’s castoff – just because he worked with Billy Beane doesn’t make him good
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
by pdb on Jun 4, 2008 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
So would you want Bobby Valentine if he was available?
And I can’t blame him for wanting to stay in Japan. Being a gaijin in Japan is about the greatest place to be on Earth.
by Wilder. on Jun 4, 2008 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If he was available, sure
but he’s not, so it’s a dead issue.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
by pdb on Jun 4, 2008 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think it is a dead issue, though.
Valentine has spent enough time in Japan to get the urge to find work back in the states. New York was a bad place for him because he hates the politics. Seattle might be the perfect place for him because he can bring over particular Japanese talent he knows would fit well in his system.
by Wilder. on Jun 4, 2008 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lessee....
hero in current position, an entire nation adores him. But, could come back to the states to manage…the worst team in baseball, with no real turnaround on the horizon? Let’s just say I don’t see it happening any time soon. And it’s not like he could bring over anyone he wants – there is no free agency between Japan and the US, players have to go through the posting system.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
by pdb on Jun 4, 2008 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not every player is posted because they play the required amount of years to reach free agency.
And yes, Valentine is in a cushy position, but we don’t know if his desire to come back to the U.S. would be enough for him to leave Japan.
It’s not a dead issue until there is confirmation he has turned down a coaching position in the U.S. As far as we know, he may just be waiting to be contacted by someone. What more does Valentine have to prove in Japan after winning the league title last year? This offseason may be the perfect window to offer him a job and he accept it.
I will accept this is a dead issue through the rest of the season, though. But don’t be peeved if his name comes up this offseason.
by Wilder. on Jun 4, 2008 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There's an outside chance he'd come back stateside, sure.
If he does, Seattle would probably be high on his list. Really, though, he’s doing fine in Japan. I don’t see him leaving.

Bavasi is...
...the least of the problems.
There needs to be a top to bottom sweep and readjustment of baseball philosophy and organizational management.
Get Armstrong and Lincoln out of there. Get scouts and player personnel who live in the 21st, not the 19th, Century. And get some people who know how stats REALLY work, and aren’t wedded to disproven concepts like defense=error avoidance, protection and all that Middle Aged thinking.
by rtang on Jun 4, 2008 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't say Bavasi is the least of our problems...
But your sentiments about Armstrong and Lincoln are correct. However, so long as the current ownership maintains the rights to the Mariners, you’re not going to see Armstrong and Lincoln go anywhere. Until those two die, or the team is sold to Paul Allen, it’ll be a lot more of the same.

A more progressive ownership group would probably serve this team well.
They’d be far more likely to embrace statistical analysis as a way of maximizing performance and revenue.
by BrianL on Jun 4, 2008 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I understand it could be good
But in the grand scheme of things Nintendo has been a pretty good ownership group. They’ve provided a good connection with Japan (Ichiro, Kenji, ect) and increased the payroll dramatically since taking over. We have had good success under their ownership even though we haven’t done as well as we would like.
I don’t really have any evidence that Nintendo is to blame. They seem to be very hands-off as far as owners go. The Mariners have continued to make a large amount of money and it sounds like as long as that continues Nintendo will for the most part keep its hands away from the day to day operations.
Hopefully the losing season this year will open some eyes and realize that ACTUALLY TRYING TO WIN is important. Hopefully they will realize you can’t just try to patch a team together and shoot for an average record because if anything goes wrong your team turns into the 2008 Mariners. Hopefully this year will wake up people and make them look around and evaluate how to build a team. That or they’ll all get canned and new people will be brought in and expected to be better (which wouldn’t be hard). Hmm this kinda turned into rambling so time to hit the post button.
by Edgar for Pres on Jun 4, 2008 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
They need to accept that scrapping much of the roster and rebuilding isn't a bad thing
They also need to keep the roster meddling to a minimum. Don’t go to the front office and ask them to sign/not sign a guy except in special cases.
by Gomez on Jun 4, 2008 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Resigning Kenji is not a bad move because our payroll is big enough
to take these types of contracts. I’m pretty sure Nintendo wasn’t asking for Washburn/Silva/Sexson/etc which are the ones that really hurt.
by Edgar for Pres on Jun 4, 2008 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know everybody is gonna say a bad contract is a bad contract
and they all add up but Nintendo gives us a big enough payroll where i think its fine for them to request a move like this occasionally. I also don’t really think that Kenji will be blocking Clement if Kenji continues to suck. At some point winning matters and even the M’s can see this.

The principle owner of this team is shelling out close to $120 million for the roster alone. I know he may have had a hand in the Johjima extension, but Ichiro is here as well, likely because of him.
But removing Lincoln and Armstrong is probably the only thing we can blame the principle owner for. The Japanese are notorious at keeping management together. It’s bad business to fire upper management in Japan, let alone any employee.

McLaren's tirade made ESPN
Came with some funny dialogue as they showed 2007 and 2008 stats (being down across the board).
ESPN Announcers:
“I picked them to win the AL West.”
“I though they would go to the Playoffs”
“Eric Bedard”
“Yep”
by ThundaPC on Jun 4, 2008 8:48 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
They also informed me that the Mariners finished 14 games over .500 last year.
It’s nice to imagine, at least.

I hope they play it later on Baseball Tonight
As much as I appreciated the optimism from the national media towards the M’s, I find it funny how foolish they look now.

Mariners are getting OWNED on Baseball Tonight.
Buster Olney: “Something has to change!”
Steve Berthume: “This team is playing like they’re asleep!”
This is hilariously sad.
by ThundaPC on Jun 4, 2008 9:27 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I enjoyed it.
Mac was pathetic in his “tirade.”
Also, Richie Sexson is gone within a week. Apparently Bavasi told all of the players to stay at their locker and answer the media’s question on why they suck. Sexson is the only one who didn’t follow orders.

Because Bavasi doesn’t want to tell the media its his fault.

Yeah, I think we all understand this already.
I was just stating that Sexson will be gone in a week because of this incident.

Now I see.
I can’t blame Sexson, either. But at the same time, that kind of attitude is telling of the overall clubhouse attitude. Nobody is willing to take accountability.
Have a good life, Sexson. You played a kid’s game for a career and earned more than enough money for you and your family to live comfortably for generations to come.

I suspect...
...that it’s not the ownership group, but the stiffs (Ellis and Lincoln) that were installed as CEOs, who think they’ve learned enough baseball to play with the big boys.
I think things would be different if Chris Larson or John Stanton were CEO….

“Anybody that’s happy in our clubhouse, there’s something wrong with him. ... We bragged about how good we were. ... We need to pick it up now. I can’t make it any clearer than that.”
As McLaren spoke in his office, a handful of players were lounging on couches in the middle of the clubhouse enjoying the movie “Super Troopers,” a 2001 comedy about misfit prankster state troopers.
One player muttered under his breath: “What are we in, kindergarten?”
When asked late Tuesday night what needs to be done, Suzuki sounded defeated.
“I don’t think at this point it is even worth it to answer that question,” the $90 million outfielder and franchise cornerstone said through an interpreter.

Good stuff.

Funny part of that article..
I was just reading it and above that “anybody that’s happy in our clubhouse, there’s something wrong with him.” is this gem of a quote from our solid ‘DH’
“I think he has every right to be like that,” designated hitter Jose Vidro said of McLaren. “But this ballclub, we’re not jogging out there. This team is playing hard. At the end of the day, I go home happy that I gave everything I’ve got. The guys are the same way, too. We play hard.”
Also was a fan of this little dandy:
“They may not know how to play the game well, they may not know how to hold each other accountable, they may not know how to fight hard,” he said. “But they are playing hard. They are trying hard.” – Bavasi. HAHAHHAA
