LL Softball 7/6 - UPDATED!!! 17 committed, 2 probables!
Ok, so we had a horrible turnout today - partially due to the absence of some regulars (Brett, John, Eric, Robert, and Matthew), the heat, and some late cancellations. I came back from Canada Late Saturday and was determined to get some exercise in and had a blast. So for all you lurkers and people on the fence, show up next Sunday and join us for a full squad game, with beer and food afterwards.
Who: LL crew
What: LL Softball
When: Sunday, 7/6, 1pm
Where: Seattle U. Softball Field on 12th and Cherry (if available, otherwise we'll go to the soccer field on 14th and Cherry)
Why: Because it's fun, and Bill will show up again, as usual!
PS...Bill actually started to pull the ball today (shock!) after reviewing his swings on film from the previous game and tweaking his mechanics. After all that Bill actually hit a Home Run over the fences!
Anyways, lets get some rec's and get a good size gathering so we can play another good game!
Roll Call - 16 + 2?
Starting

Two Rs and Two Ls
Jaejo
Brett (+1)
Gomez (injury - game time decision)
Graham (+1)
Smegmalicious (+1)

I won't be there....
Goin to a Cabin on Whidbey from the 3-6. Gonna be killer. Anybody know if there are bars in Gig Harbor?
Yeah, but isn't that closer to Tacoma? By car?
I have a ton of family on Whidbey Island (in and around the Freeland area) and to my knowledge Gig Harbor’s a ferry ride away from Whidbey… and a long one at that…
Anyway, I am sure there are plenty of good watering holes with warm-blooded summer co-eds ready to take your money during the holiday weekend in that area.
Jason Ellison, your Seattle Mariners legacy will not be forgotten.
Strange
but I’ll be in Oak Harbor that weekend too. I haven’t been there in 6 years so it would be tough to recommend any bars. Brew pub is okay, OH Tavern is pretty cheap, there’s usually a live band at the Blue Dolphin. Most of the partying is done at people’s homes not at the bars.
Oak Harbor's a sleepy town with a Naval base
I know they have some chain restaurants on the main drag but am not all that familiar with the bar layout of the town… I’m sure there’s a bar where a ton of old people have been trading the same stories for years. I’d stick with the cabin.
Jason Ellison, your Seattle Mariners legacy will not be forgotten.
I am going to try my best to make it
But I think I got to work this Sunday. I had a hard time getting last Sunday off but who knows. With my luck it will probably be a pretty good turn out too if I end up missing it.
Jl/Robert '08: Promise for a CoachCage tomorrow!
I am very likely in.
But someone else needs to take camera duty, because I come to play, not take pictures.

Can anyone show up for this?
I haven’t played ball in a while, but softball sounds like it would be fun.
If you can run, throw and swing a bat, you can play
Even if you had absolutely no ability or talent whatsoever, you probably won’t be too out of place. I am atrocious in many respects.
Ok, I'm tentitively in.
My birthday is that weekend so the gf may do some kind of crazy thing, but I’d like to play.

Out. as usual
You can run, but you can't hide! Unless it's in this general area over here. Blindspot.
I'm in again.
Meager turnout last time, but it was still an awesome afternoon.
You people need to do these on a Tuesday or something so I can go to one of them.
One Vision, One Purpose
Peace Through Power
I would do it, but I think most people work Monday through Friday.
Jl/Robert '08: Promise for a CoachCage tomorrow!
Yeah, that's the key obstacle
I’d take a day off of work to do a weekday softball game, but I’m also fucking crazy.
I've haven't had a weekend off in 5 years.
Fuck all of you.
One Vision, One Purpose
Peace Through Power
If we did a weekday softball game, I'd take the day off to play
I know you’re kinda stuck with your days given your line of work.
I'd do a weekday
I usually work weekends. Including this Sunday – bleh. I want to show up to one of these.
I usually work Mon-Fri
But I’m off Monday and Tuesday, the 14th and 15th. I would be able to make it one of those days.
Gauge interest for Thursday?
I can get an early out from work since people will be bolting early for the holiday anyway.
Thursday would be an awesome day!

Sucks for you.
Europe sucks in general. But sometimes I think they have the right idea. 4 day work weeks. The month of August off… (or is this just France?)
Europe sucks?
Really?

Yeah, all joking aside
I just meant I’d rather live in America except for the fact that they work less, which is totally awesome.
I live in Europe
It absolutely rules. Well, unless you like hot women and cheap but still good beer. And great food. Oh yeah and lots of cool shit to go see, with an incredible public transit system available for said travel. So I guess if you don’t like any of that stuff then Europe sucks in general.
Zagreb, Croatia.
I also lived in Germany for about 8 years total. I left there in late ‘05. I’m still new to Croatia, only been here about 3 weeks, but I love it so far.
I've heard great things about the public transit system
in Prague among other European places. That is one thing (of many) that I wish America would do a better job on.
Not to mention Europe is way ahead of America in health care.
And not to mention they don’t have the retarded 21 or up drinking law.

This would be a lot better for me than Sunday. Anyone?

Don't forget the Seattle Beerfest is going on Sunday too.

This does seem like the way to go, imo
Or else get a masters in education, teach gym/english or something easy and coach bball. That seems easyish, no?
Teaching is pretty much the opposite of easy.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 6, 2008 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions
This is certainly true.
I find it to be hilarious that high school gym teachers have the same pay scale as high school calculus teachers. They generally want you to be able to teach at least one other subject these days, though.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 6, 2008 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions
My AP calculus teacher in high school also taught ballet
if that means anything, but yea. I think most gym teachers coach at least one sport, and I think sometimes, that they are unofficially paid for their coaching services, rather than teaching services. (I don’t think high school sports coaches make anything from actually coaching).
Jl/Robert '08: Promise for a CoachCage tomorrow!
No I heard you can get a bump up of
3k or so per sport, depending on the sport.
My cross country coach was the head of the English department, taught 1 or 2 classes per trimester, coached cross country and indoor track, and took outdoor track off to train for the Boston Marathon. He was also my house counselor (boarding school). I always thought this was the sweetest job, especially since he ran with us, and his one or two classes were senior classes that he could pick and choose what topic he wanted to choose.
Considering the amount of work involved, 3k is jack squat.
My dad coaches football, but used to coach baseball, wrestling and serve as his school’s A.D. When each sport was in season, he worked close to 40 extra hours per week. He did the math once and figured out that he was making $5.75/hr for coaching, not including his duties as A.D., for which he wasn’t compensated.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 6, 2008 11:40 AM PDT up reply actions
True, but if you coach xc
you can run with the runners, and it’s kind of fun. Not worth it if you go per hour basis, but worth it if you like doing it (like most things in life though)
Sure.
There’s a reason people still coach. They should still be paid better.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 6, 2008 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm sure if I followed the template that some of my teachers have used, I could do it
1) Take all the other teachers ideas
2) Dumb them down
3) Group Work!
4) Video!
5) Repeat 1-4

Shit shit shit shit shit
I just sprained my ankle on my way back from lunch. I was hurrying across 3rd Avenue when I planted my right foot and it rolled badly and gave out. I can’t believe I was able to limp the extra block plus back to work… though the fact I could enough weight on it to limp back indicates it’s not broken or otherwise badly injured. It doesn’t hurt terribly, but it’s swelling a bit.
I’m now questionable, if not doubtful, for Sunday.
Were you hurrying to get out of the way of a taxi Carlos Beltran was driving?
Kidding aside, that sucks man. R-I-C-E and such.
As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 3, 2008 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Don't take your shoe off until you get home
because the minute you do it will swell like a mofo. The rest of your work day keep it as elevated as possible, and yes, RICE it all evening.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
And then walk on it tomorrow.
Sounds weird, but it’s actually best to use your ankle quite a bit after a sprain. Gets the blood flowing and helps speed the recovery process. It’s best to walk with no limp, even if it is painful.
Exactly. Counterintuitive, but it works.
And ibuprofen. Two in the morning, two at night.

I hurt my ankle in the 8th grade and the first doctor that I saw told me to do this.
Unfortunately, it was actually a hairline fracture, and walking on it made it bad enough that it had to be in a cast for two months. Those two months coincided with a major growth spurt, and since the break was across the growth plate, shoe shopping is more difficult than it should be.

going to see Sleater-Kinney after injuring the ankle was probably not the smartest decision ever made.

Thanks for the advice, all you guys
I’ve got ice on it, and it obviously hurts a bit, but I can put enough weight on it to comfortably limp around the room, and the swelling doesn’t look too bad. I’ll RICE it, take it easy once I get home and hope for a quick recovery.
Fill me in here, what is RICE?

Well, after two days, it's feeling much better
I was able to walk around on it fine yesterday with a brace and wrap. I do a lot of walking in general, and was able to walk half a mile to catch a bus, though a bit slower than usual, and walk some more after that. I didn’t run around or anything, and there were moments of minor twinges of pain. It’s still a bit swollen and it’s got the requisite bruising. I’m still not too sure about playing, but I also didn’t expect it to feel this good after a couple days.
Not going to make it
Sorry have to work all day. Have fun guys.

Actually I work at a restaurant as a cook
But yea, I may be probable. It may be slow enough tomorrow where they will let me go early. If that’s the case, I will head down there as soon as I get off. But otherwise I won’t be able to make it.
Jl/Robert '08: Promise for a CoachCage tomorrow!
Ok, I'm planning to come and I'm going to probably bring a buddy
The only problem is he’s from Uruguay, so he might try to kick the ball or something, I don’t know. Is there a limit on the amount of people I can bring? I might be able to recruit a couple of bodies if we need them.
Thinking about coming out tommorow, and bringing the GF.

While I will likely be at the field… I’m not sure I’ll play. I can move around on my foot but not sure it can take a few hours of running after line drives, planting in the batters box and running the bases.
I’ll look to bring a camera and take pics.
Jeanuts might not be able to play a full game either.
Her back might not be able to handle it. Still, we should have enough to figure out how to do a decent game.
