God.

Randy Wolf: I've got a thing for pitchers with arm problems. Wolf's shoulder went funny last year, and he hasn't made 30 starts in a season since 2003, but he's good when he's healthy, and he's probably not in line to get that much money. He's got a wide range of potential outcomes, but with the team looking how it does, I'd rather go high risk/high reward than lean on proven mediocrities like Jarrod Washburn.

For the first time in as long as I can remember I'll be headed to a baseball game without really knowing who to root for. Can I just root for Felix?

I agree.

But he would still be an improvement over Batista, and probably even Silva. While Pineiro has been lucky given his LD% and BAPIP, his FIP to date is still just a shade over 4.00.

She's pretty good about knowing what's going on.

She left me a message this morning while I was sleeping (I work nights) that went something like, “Hey, babe. If you can sneak out of work early today, I got free tickets to the game. I know you hate Jarrod Washburn, but it might still be fun!” That made me laugh. She’s been around long enough to know that Washburn pisses me off.

But whatever. I got awesome seats for Sunday. That’s all I want.

I like Fremont...

Well, parts of it.

Been to George and Dragon?

by Matthew on Jun 27, 2008 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I like things about Fremont

but the new class of people moving in are not at all my style. And Friday/Saturday nights are pretty much Gomorrah.

I’ve been to the George and Dragon once. I was with my girlfriend and another female friend of ours who is, shall we say, unlucky in love. She saw a guy “making eyes at her” in the bar, but was too bashful to talk to him. I jokingly (I thought) said I’d go give him her number if she wanted. We all had a good laugh and kept drinking. After another beer or eight, she asked if I was serious about giving the guy her number. I laughed and said no, and shortly thereafter we left the bar. She then managed to guilt trip me (I was pretty fucking drunk at this point) into going back inside and giving the guy her number.

Trouble was, he was in the bathroom. And me, trying to be a good friend, waited for him. And then walked up to him and gave him my friend’s number, in front of everyone in the bar.

I haven’t been back.

As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.

by Aaron Campeau on Jun 27, 2008 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions

No.

You don’t suck.

As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.

by Aaron Campeau on Jun 27, 2008 8:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Just a hunch.

And I wasn’t referring to an economic or social class, so I could have chosen a better word.

The kinds of people I’m talking about drive full-sized SUVs and live in dense urban environments without assigned parking spaces, and then threaten to call their lawyer when businesses tow them for parking in their 20-minute parking spots. They shove people who ask them to “please not use that urinal, because it’s overflowing you see, and the water is draining into my store and it’s going to drench the carpet and make it smell like piss.” They bite chunks of hot dog vendors faces off and call in noise complaints on established music venues that they knowingly chose to live near. They don’t tip their baristas because “anyone could make a cup of coffee.”

I just have a feeling you’re not that kind of guy.

(All of these things have actually happened in the past year.)

As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.

by Aaron Campeau on Jun 27, 2008 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions

The thing that sucks

is that Fremont is awesome 75% of the time, but the rest of the time it’s the worst place in the entire world.

I know, this is a team that we just can't afford getting a lead on

I mean, they have no ability to score, even against our mediocre pitching. I was looking forward to a 21 inning snoozer that ended like 2-1, much like San Diego had earlier this year

I though he just did. I can hear the TV from the waiting area here at work, and I thought Sims said he got a K

And Gameday shows one out for the inning, but no record of it anywhere. Hm

Yep, there it goes.

It just updated (late) and he struck out Khalil Greene. Washburn is a stud…

Seriously, what happened?

I remember thinking the Padres completely stole him from Chicago because of the fight with Zambrano. Then he just took a dump.

He’s been injured a good deal, too, I guess.

by Teej on Jun 27, 2008 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions

My guess: slower bat, move from Wrigley to Petco.

He’s also one of the few major leaguers to play both catcher and shortstop.

Well, time to go home. This game is boring, and not worth staying at work for

It shows how strong our rotation used to be

that a ~league average pitcher like Tomko was stuck in the mop up/AAA role.

True

But I’d prefer to watch Washburn get destroyed and then call him at 90 pitches that watch the pitch count rise and wait for the inevitable. More interesting that way.
