Michel Inoa

Well I have been reading everything I can about this guy and I am very impressed. He is only 16 and is already 6' 7" and a pretty athletic frame.

I have also read that the Mariners aren't even going to pursue this guy...yeah. We are in a big time rebuilding mode and the Mariners can't even offer 5 millions dollars to a kid that could by himself make our farm 10x better. Is there something I don't know?

Oakland is expected to offer him 4.5 million or so. The Yankees are in the mix as well. I guess I am just wondering, why not just swoop in and sign him for 5-6 million? The kid figures to be a star, and has a very projectable body already, and nasty stuff. Anyways I may be just rambling on about something I don't have all the facts on. But it sure seems like a no brainer to sign this kid.

Here is a scouting report.

Meh?

While Inoa is quite possibly an impact talent from the region, it’s not as though the M’s aren’t spenders down there. They’ll probably pick up at least one player in the international period for $1 million+.

Their international scouting succeeds in part because it goes a lot deeper than most others. We all knew about Triunfel and Mario Martinez when they signed, we knew a little about Gabriel Norriega and Jharmidy de Jesus from last year, but there are also guys around like Michael Pineda. He didn’t make waves when he signed, it was hardly a blip on the radar, but he’s been one of the best starters in the Timber Rattlers’ rotation all season as a nineteen year old and now people talk about him as though he’s one of the top pitching prospects in the system.

Everyone knows about Inoa, so whoever is trying to make a statement is going to throw a bunch of money at him to get the job done. Meanwhile, the M’s will spend less than a quarter of that on a couple of different players who will probably turn up in short season next year or the year after and quickly rise through the system’s ranks.

International scouting it one thing we can trust the M's to do well

From what I have read everyone has scouted him but there are only 3-4 teams after him at this point. Probably mostly do to the current price tag.

That was mentioned in reports

and since there’s nothing linked above that contradicts that, I’m not convinced the Mariners aren’t looking at him.

Furthermore, it’s Bob Engle and the Mariners have one of, if not the largest, int’l budget. There’s no reason to think we know better than any of them.

I don't really understand the point in budgets.

If a guy is worth the money, spend it on him. Why limit international spending one year if there are tons of good international prospects? And for that matter, if we have a much higher success rate at international prospects, a decent success rate in the draft, and a horrible success rate in free agency, why not play to our strengths? Or at least play to it until we get a competent GM who can properly evaluate major league talent and on-the-cusp-of-declining veterans.
I don’t know if Engle doesn’t want this guy because he doesn’t believe he’s worth $5 million, or if he doesn’t want to blow 80% of his budget on one guy when there are several guys out there he wants to sign (and feels he has a better chance on due to our extensive scouting), but I don’t believe that a budget should get in the way.

In Engle WeTrust.

It’s sorta been said already here, but if there’s ANYONE in the M’s system I trust, it’s Engle.

He’s got a fairly large budget, and if he doesn’t sign a guy it’s not because of incompetency w/r/t that part of the organization. It’s also likely not that we weren’t willing to spend lots of money.

Listen to JY, too—the M’s international acquisitions (hit or miss) aren’t something to be concerned about for the reasons he mentions. Lots of guys fly under the radar who the M’s know tons and tons about. The M’s have a great handle on who can make it in the bigs, and what their talent level is.

Exactly.

Put it in these terms…

You’re an international scouting director heading into the signing period with 4.5 million dollars burning a hole in your pocket.

Do you:

a) Spend every last dime on Michel Inoa, figuring there’s a good probability that he’ll be the top prospect in your system one year from now.
b) Make three to four Carlos Triunfel-level signings.
or c) Exploit your scouting resources on the ground and make five to six signings on the level of Juan Ramirez/Michael Pineda/Yao-wen Chang/Gabriel Noriega

Keep in mind that you’re dealing with the equivalent of high school sophomores who have had inconsistent training, conditioning, and equipment throughout their lives.

Knowing the M’s what we’re going to see is a combination of b) and c), and that’s perfectly fine by me. I can find my share of faults with how the M’s conduct business where player acquisition is concerned, but the international signings are rarely among them.

I’m not sure that we’ve ever spent 4.5 million+ on signings either…

Problem with taking a b)

type approach: sometimes there aren’t 3 to 4 Carlos Triunfels available. There might be one Inoa type, and one Triunfel type. There is a finite amount of talent.

And even if there are 3 to 4 Triunfels available, you are going to have to compete with other teams to sign every single one of them. The lower price might mean more teams jumping in. Which might drive up the final price above what he is “worth”.

Yes

As J mentioned, the M’s may believe they’re better served focusing their efforts on other talents that can provide similar potential for return at a lower cost and with less time/development/risk/effort/etc.

Now, if they sign Inoa, obviously I’m not gonna complain. But if he’s not a top target of theirs, I’m not gonna complain about that either.

Wait until the deadline

I have found that the rumors about who is signing where leading up to the int’l signing date are pretty inaccurate. That includes the specific teams plus the signing bonuses. In particular, it seems like the bonus rumors are almost always way way inflated. So take that with a grain of salt. Lots more teams are getting involved in Latin America, so who knows. He could end up signing with Royals.

Really, I have to wonder about the wisdom of giving a 16 year old pitcher $3-4 million. Prep pitchers in the draft are enough of a crap shoot. Projecting a 16-year-old, particularly a pitcher, is really tough.

Regardless, the M’s have been excellent in international scouting, both in terms of finding hidden gems and in willingness to open their wallets. I am really looking forward to hearing about who they sign.

And just to be completely obvious for those who don't know...

The signing period is from July 2 until August 31

Good points by everyone

It still going to be a shame if he signs with Oakland though. Have him kicking our but for years to come.

For some reason that reminds me

Anyone seen Rick Porcello lately?

He's in High A doing all right.

Lots of groundballs but not a ton of strikeouts, from what I’ve read.

Athletics win.

Reportedly.
