Ah, summer...

Finally, FINALLY, summer arrives this weekend. Temperatures down here in Portland are going to be pushing 100 degrees, and it looks like all you Seattleites will be enjoying near-90 degree temperatures. So, in celebration of summer, I'll crack open a beer.

Great Divide Samurai Ale isn't very well loved on beeradvocate.com, but I don't care. It's refreshing, it's tasty, and I enjoy it, goddammit.

So friday. Beer topic.

You know what I think is an underrated summer beer? Anchor Steam. I wish it were cheaper and easier to get here, but I think it’s good a nice complex taste to it that just fits well with a warm/hot day.

Also, that Anderson Valley Creme Cerveza was right on.

by Matthew on Jun 27, 2008 10:03 AM PDT reply actions

Oh yeah, Anchor Steam is tops.

It was one of the first craft beers I ever really got in to, and so I always (mistakenly) put it in the category of stuff I’ve moved on from, like Pyramid, Big Sky, etc. And then I have it and remember how fantastic it is. It’s a great companion to Scotch, too.

They have it on tap at the People’s Pub, but I haven’t seen it on tap anywhere else. I haven’t had any trouble finding it in stores, though, and it’s usually not all that expensive.

As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.

Anchor Steam is on tap at Piecora's Pizza in Cap Hill

along with Boundary Bay scotch ale and Newcastle Nut Brown Ale.

Boundary Bay Scotch is fantastic

I, and many others in my class, covered city council with a heavy buzz during Journalism 301 many times thanks to trips to BB. As for Anchor Steam Summer, I live in SF now and that stuff is EVERYWHERE. Bleh. I actually get excited to drink a Redhook now. Oh, how I loved AS and Sierra Nevada before I moved down here.

My only issue with Anchor Steam is that they managed to patent the Steam Beer process

I would love to see what some of the other great brewers could do using that same method, but alas it is illegal. IIRC it is the only method of brewing a beer that is proprietary.

It is a great beer though.

Snoqualmie makes one called Steam Train

but I don’t know if it’s a “this is as close as we’re gonna’ get” type of thing or what. It’s pretty meh.

The Mult Village one is my favorite of the three

the NW one is really sterile and bland, much like most of NW, but the one in the Village is really cool, plus they make great pizza. And yeah, their beer’s really good – the IPA is good, I think the Maibock (sp?) was good too but after several IPA’s they all tend to blend together.

I go grocery shopping at Winco, Albertsons, and Safeway. None of these places seem to ever have any of these good beers you people regularly talk about. In fact when I went to Albertsons today the only one I found was one type of Rogue. I live in Puyallup, can anyone recommend a good place to shop for these beauties?

by marinator on Jun 27, 2008 11:44 AM PDT reply actions

Safeway usually has a few good beers.

I’m basing that off the Safeway in Ballard, though, so I dunno’ if it applies. Is there a Top Foods in Puyallup? They usually have a good selection.

Yeah, QFC is a waste of time.

And not just in the beer department. They’re more expensive than Greenwood/Ballard Market (which are both really expensive) and their selection and quality is on par with Safeway’s I hate QFC.

Top Foods should definitely have some good shit.

Magic 8-ball agrees.

I have a cousin with 1 testicle, when they yell play ball, he smiles.

It is most certainly so.

Does anyone else here enjoy Leinenkugel?

My girlfriend from Chicago introduced me to it, and I really like it. The sunset wheat is great, but I found this one the other day (Summer Shandy). 1/2 Beer, 1/2 lemonade. Is it a bitch beer? Maybe, but it is delicious. Any thoughts?

Ohhhh, I don't know about that...

I can’t say for sure, because I’ve never had it, but that sounds vile.

As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.

That was my thought too

But as I sat there at the liquor store, I thought, “I’ve never had a bad beer from them.” So I decided to give it a try, and it’s one of the most refreshing beers I’ve ever had. Obviously really light, but so drinkable. It went great with huge hamburgers…

Shandy or Radlers are pretty common

but I’d never buy them pre-made like that unless tehy were discounted because as you say you’re paying half for lemonade. Buy the beer and lemonade sep and mix and it’ll be a better value.

by Matthew on Jun 27, 2008 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

So true.

I prefer to make home squeezed lime aid and mix the beer with that. It is the drink that Budweiser and Miller are bastardizing with their lime beers. Beautiful drink on a super hot day.

They're trying to make pre-made Corona with a lime.

Not a 50/50 (insert fruit here)-ade / beer mix.

But in Corona it at least has a reason.

The lime sits atop the bottle so you can disinfect with it after it’s been sitting in unsafe ice.

You need better ice!

LOL!

I tried a beer earlier this week that you put a slice of orange in, and it was pretty good. I wish I could remember the name of it.

Besides Blue Moon?

Mexican beer=unsafe to drink water=unsafe ice=actual reasoning behind the lime. Not just a frat boy trick.

I know. I was just kidding.

And it wasn’t Blue Moon. Somewhat similar, but it wasn’t that. I wish I could remember, it was better than Blue Moon, and quite refreshing.

A.K.A. any number of wit or here beers

People put orange in blue moon (as mentioned), paulaner hefe, hoegaarden, etc etc

by Matthew on Jun 27, 2008 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I gave up and called my bartender.

Shock Top was the beer I tried with the orange the other day.

That sounds wonderful

I freakin love the taste of lime. What’s your favorite beer to combine it with?

by Robert Lintott on Jun 27, 2008 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

My favorite beer any time of year is Mirror Pond, and it goes great with that.

However, I am not a big stout or porter drinker so I am not sure how well that would mix.

I think you are safe doing that with any ale though. It can work over ice too. Sometimes I put in a dash of salt to open up the taste buds for the lime.

by Sec 108 on Jun 27, 2008 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Mmm.. Mirror Pond.

That sounds good right now.

I have never heard of this before.

If I want alcoholic lemonade I’ve always just added some booze, never beer though.

I always went with a "lynchburg" lemonade.

Beer and lemonade, hmm…. Hey, anything’s worth a try once.

It's wonderful

But the key is to use crappy beer

by ningwers on Jun 27, 2008 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

You lost me now.

If crap beer is a requirement, I’m out.

Me too.

The key is that it should be a light tasting beer

and there’s no reason to waste quality beer if you’re going to dilute it

by ningwers on Jun 27, 2008 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

It's true.

Though I’ve done it with Chimay White.

In general, German lagers make good radler beers.

by Matthew on Jun 27, 2008 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

This I might try...

I would imagine pales or ambers would be best?

After the school picnic

And after all the people who are buying stuff off me from Craigslist leave, I’m dropping my bottle of this down:

What a f’d up week. Definitely need beer tonight!

I've got to wait to have too many beers until after my 8:30 softball game.

But then I can have all I like because the GF can drive me home if need be.

That stuff has been taunting me all week.

I get paid Monday, though, so I think I’ll be able to splurge on a $13 beer.
