6/20: Open Game Thread

Seattle Mariners at Atlanta Braves, Jun 20, 2008 4:35 PM PDT

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Erik Bedard 4-4 12 12 0 0 0 0 67.1 60 36 31 8 31 62 4.14 1.35

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2008 - Jorge Campillo 2-1 20 6 1 0 0 0 54.0 45 17 13 4 9 45 2.17 1.00

According to Josh Kalk's PITCHf/x data (for which the information is a few days old), Jeff Clement has seen 37 changeups and swung through ten of them, while Jorge Campillo has thrown 87 changeups to lefties and gotten them to miss 18 of them. It's not hard to tell why, either; just look at this location. There's barely anything to hit. It's perfect.

Campillochlhb_medium

So, yeah, considering the change is Campillo's big weapon against left-handed bats, this matchup may not be Clement's cup of tea. If he plays. I haven't yet determined how much I hate Jim Riggleman. hey neat

On a lighter note,

Have you read about how the network made them add a character to the show to make it consistent with the pro-conformity message present in all cartoons at the time?

It was Eric the Cavalier.

They wanted all cartoons to have the same message as The Get-Along Gang

in which kids were always encouraged to agree with the group in order to promote social harmony.

So Eric the Cavalier was added the D&D to disagree with everything the group ever decided, but then later be proven wrong. Every time.

I own the season 1 DVDs and its so atrociously bad. The plot holes and stupidity in the first 3 episodes alone are mind boggling.

Also I prefer the OG Ninja Turtles comics to the 1980s cartoon. I hated how they dumbed it down and took out all the violence and blood.

I mean relative to the typical 2008 Mariners bench we've seen all season.

I still have some faith in Joh. And Reed can pinch-hit against a righty or come in to play some good defense. And Vidro’s switch-hitting has some value.

I was kind of kidding, but in all seriousness, this bench is better than we’re used to.

It’s like Foster Freeze (or is it Frosty Freeze?) just an old time greasy burger joint. I like the root beer floats and freezes but anything food wise expect it to be covered in grease.

I can best them both

though it’s not much of challenge, since only Foster Freeze of the two is any good.

If you are in Vancouver, WA or in and around KC, KS/MO you must go to Sheridan’s Frozen Custard. Frozen Custard is to high dollar premium ice cream, what a blow job is to being shot in the face with a howitzer. Okay, I might be overstating it a bit, but it’s good and you should go there if you get a chance.

not necessarily RISP but for every base runner the Ms have how often do they score a run?

by Thingray on Jun 20, 2008 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

this is going to take awhile - those stats aren't easily found

Either that or my stat searching skills suck. I’m guessing a little of the former a lot of the latter

by nwtrev on Jun 20, 2008 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK. So I added in IBB -apparently those are separate from BB now -

and I couldn’t find RBOE states but I didn’t try very hard so I just left that out

Ms – .328
For Comparison
Padres – 0.297
Rays -0.355
Cubs – 0.371

Which was a lot of work to tell me, well, not much really. Losing teams don’t score runs as efficiently as winning teams. Oh well… at least I burned up some time

What, the chop?

In fact I just watched a program last night talking about how proud Native Americans (Indians) were of their Tomahawks. Most of them refused to have their pictures taken without them, and would pass them down from generation to generation. What’s wrong with using a symbol that the group you chose to honor with your team name thought was so important?

Fair enough. I didn't word that very well anyway.

And I don’t feel like getting into a deep discussion like this on a Friday. Lets just talk about beer, sunshine and lollipops instead.

whatever, it’s a neat story as long as he’s able to keep it up

He did it before!

back in the late 90s on Front Page Sports baseball.

Those were the days man!

Probably the best combination of on field gameplay and simulation

for a long time. I still think most modern console baseball games are nowhere close to it in terms of depth and accuracy.

i only wanted a full minor league system though..

NO game has given me that. MVP is close, but no Low A Ball

by PhilKenSebben on Jun 20, 2008 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

the minors thing was not that great in FPS. But I don’t think anyone copied it until High Heat baseball like 3 years later.

Then MVP added the option to actually play the minor league games, albeit the rosters seemed crappier than the HH minor league rosters.

One of my goals in life is to work for possibly Sony on the MLB the Show series and try to make it better than it is. I wish I hadn’t delayed in my app process to 2k, I could be working on 2k baseball right now :(

Of course I would have had to move to NorCal :(

You don't like a good story, do you?

End results aren’t everything. The journey’s as much fun as the destination in this case. If he pulls a George Brett and stays over .400 until late August it’ll be fantastic.

Read the wikipedia article on the show

for more crazy info on how they spliced shit together. I think they only went crazy with the splicing for MMPR and used the source material more closely for later seasons.
