LL Softball Sunday June 29 FINAL roll call. (It's Still On!)
I noticed that despite probably one of the highest turn outs for LL softball this year was today, a lot of potential players had father's day plans or something else that prevented them for going (myself included). I am going to make sure there is nothing that prevents me from making this one in two weeks. I figure two weeks is enough notice to make plans, and last time I checked, there is no major holiday on June 29. Basically just commit yourself if you can make it.
Here is the information of time and place:
Time: 1PM, Sunday
Place: 14th and Cherry or 12th and Cherry (Seattle U soccer or Softball field. Depends on what is available)
Roll Call: 8 (9?)
Fin
Two Rs and Two Ls (+1?)
Gomez
Jaejo
wlad-o-matic (Paul)
LantermanC
RED
wwbaker3
Despite people bailing at the last second, its still happening, so its not too late to commit or just show up at the Seattle U softball field at 1 (Address is stated above). If you have friends who have nothing to do on this sunny, warm day, bring them along as well!

I haven't looked at my schedule...
but Seattle U’s field is pretty small. I preferred playing over by Garfield when we did that. Maybe I’m in the minority here. But just an idea. I’d rather play without fences than with short fences.
I like Garfield too, it is just usually taken. If we could find out if it's free that's fine

I agree in principle to playing on June 29
I do like having the fence, even if it is a bit short. Maybe there’s somewhere else that we could get access to with a longer fence? Doesn’t Rainier Beach have a turf field with a fence? I know I played baseball there a couple years ago and they did.

Unfortunately
I promised a buddy of mine I would play with his team in some basketball league. That day is the day of the league final, and I’m pretty sure they’ll be in it. I don’t really want to play, but he’s a good friend. It doesn’t really seem fair haha
I really want to come.
Unfortunately I’ve been working two jobs (one of them graveyard) the last month, and into mid-July. So between 65-70 hour work weeks with weird ass scheduling, I probabaly can’t make it. However, if I’m able to actually get a day off sometime I’m totally down. I’ll check back in a week or so. I’m an asset (useless left hander who can’t pitch or hit) to whatever teams I play on.
I would encourage anyone to attend
... because this last one was fun. i didn’t know anybody but everyone was really friendly.
and there were donuts too.

Only if you are forced to play LF
I fucking hate you Mariners
I am a horrible outfielder.
Leave that to the athletes like Matthew and johnbai. I am okay at 3rd though since I have an accurate arm.
I meant it as a suggestion that you are LL's version of Ibanez
I fucking hate you Mariners
Um...
not that I’m not flattered… but I think you have me confused with an actual athlete. I’m just really tall. Other than that, I’m a fat old man.
Yeah, well when we played in April you handled yourself well out there.
I think I fell four times trying to play LF so I am not real interested in embarrassing myself like that again.
Just a heads up...
The Seafair Marathon is on that day, and traffic should be clear after noon, but it starts in Husky Stadium, and crosses the floating bridge into Bellevue, so if you live on the Eastside, might want to take that into consideration.

How long do these things last anyways
I’m considering buying a bat and a glove. Also i’d hate to drive all the way to Seattle just for an hours worth of fun. Will there be basketball/ultimate frisbee afterwords?
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
I could bring my ultimate frisbee
But it depends on how many people show. If we get a game going it could last for 4 hours or more. Where do you live?

Redmond
Not too far, but I’m lazy/cheap. And I have no clue where anything in Seattle is, except the Key Arena, Safeco field, and Qwest.
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
I drive to Seattle from Mill Creek for these things
Its really not that bad. Its like the same exit off the freeway you’d take to get to Safeco, James st exit. 165. Then you go left on James street, and follow and it will turn into Cherry and you will eventually see 12th ave. I suggest you google map for better directions but thats the general idea.

I think these get tentatively scheduled for 1-6pm
And if we have enough people we start play around 1, and probably feel done with playing between 4 and 5, with some eating/hanging out afterwards.
At least, that’s what the experience of the last couple times suggests. I think if there are more people (i.e. teams) we end up playing longer into the afternoon.

Dude.
Seriously. Don’t buy a bat. Other people got bats, and really, for this level the bat makes zero difference. You’d be better off buying donuts and bring them to the game for everyone.
Nope, I'm bored as hell
might as well hit softballs in my backyard this weekend.
Plus if I bought donuts… then EVERYONE could enjoy, whereas if I bought a bat, just I would enjoy it. I’ll just by the “cheap” $100 bat.
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
Yeah but Red brought donuts last time and they were so delicious
You would be loved by everyone in attendance!
It’s your money, if you got 100 bucks to use on a bat, go for it. I just don’t think you NEED to spend it.
Yeah, I don't really spend any money
except for tv on dvd, so I’m fine with $100 bucks.. I’m actually sorely tempted to just blow $300 bucks on a good bat…
Also, if there are only 10 people… how’re we going to play…? 2 OFers, and instead of 2b and ss, just 2b?
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
There will probably end up being more.
I think Matthew was floating the idea of a 3 team game….each team with 4 players if I remember correctly.
More ideally
that’s a 5 on 5 on 5 game… with a 10 person defense comprised of two teams and a 5 person team batting.
Back from work, left early...
Bat 60 bucks, glove 80 bucks, balls 12 bucks, not looking horrendous next Sunday, priceless (using the Mastercard slogan, lame)
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
you spent $80 on a glove?
dang. Ever been to Play It Again Sports? Much, much cheaper.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.
Does anybody want to hit up a batting cage before this installment of softball?
There’s a place at 270 S Hanford that I’ve been to that looks interesting.
by Two Rs and Two Ls on Jun 20, 2008 10:41 AM PDT reply actions
I would do that if it didn't take too long
But then again batting cages tend to be a little costy depending on where you go.
Jl/Robert '08: Promise for a CoachCage tomorrow!
That place is pretty high-end in terms of cages/practice pitching mounds
I hear you can take cheap lunchtime BP.
I remember hearing that they had a deal
but they also suggested coming in as a group since hitting for 15 minutes straight is blisteriffic.
What I’d ACTUALLY like to do would be to get in on the PSSBL, but I spend too much time in Oregon to do it.
by Two Rs and Two Ls on Jun 20, 2008 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't think they have slow-pitch softball machines...
But you can rent a cage with a mound, home plate, and a screen for a BP pitcher…. so if you go with a pal, you can switch off hitting and pitching.
by wlad-o-matic on Jun 20, 2008 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions
I think I'll practice my swing on wii sports
cheaper than batting cages (sunk cost)
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
Practiced the real thing at some soccer fields today...
I think I’m going to give Robert a run for his money for LVP…
1) I can hardly hit it further than I can throw it…
2) I’m not sure if I can throw from 3rd to 1st
3) How in the hell does J Rollins or Ichiro hit homeruns? I’m 5’8” 140, so close enough in size (height anyways), yet I coudldn’t hit a fly ball to Ichiro in center if I tried.
4) How in the hell can Beltre fire in those rockets from 3b so hard and accurate?
5) It’s hard to hit a ball by throwing it high up in the air, and waiting for it to fall down
6) Softball bats suck, too light
7)This is going to be fun
8) don’t hit balls with your dogs around, one of the balls hit m 12 lb dog and she was scared of the softballs the rest of the time
9) I went to QFC afterward to get her some dog treats, which turned out to be good because I got stuff to make a sandwich, also, bagel sandwiches are 10x better than normal sandwiches.
10) Also good thing, the Gamecrazy next to the QFC employs two hot girls for some reason (i don’tknow maybe it encourages gamers to buy games?)
Thats it for now…
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
Softballs, being bigger, are harder to throw sharply than baseballs
I’m sure Beltre’s throws to 1st with a softball would float a bit as well.
Also, if you can make consistent contact and can hit the ball past the pitcher, don’t worry about your hitting. For more info, ask johnbai about The Gomez Shift.
I was using softballs AND baseballs
not much difference in terms of distance…
But thanks for the reassurance. What the heck is the Gomez shift? Just have everyone a 140 feet away?
http://seattlesportsmaniac.blogspot.com
Gomez shift:
More like, pitch the ball (from about 42.4 feet away), then take a quick side step to your right and bend down. Expect a ground ball to come directly to you.
As of right now Im in
I might have to leave a little early, Im being treated to my birthday dinner that night at Brazilian grill.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on Jun 23, 2008 12:59 PM PDT reply actions
We had an intramural kickball tournament the other year at Willamette
I played on a team of all Japanese students (except of course for myself) and this one kid broke his arm in an attempt to catch the kickball.
We ended up winning the game, but got thrashed later by the football team fraternity.

That ball must've been kicked REALLY hard.
OR else the kid must have a Bedard-like glass arm ( or Doyle-like)
I haven't played since I was 12
but I’ll be up for any “sport”, as long as you burn more calories doing it than if you were to do nothing (bowling while consuming pitchers of beer is not an example of this).
