LL-USSM Weekend -- Was that ever fun...

So it was great to see everyone at the meeting and the event (except for you, Graham...). A couple highlights in case you missed it:

Saturday after the official meeting a few of the LL'ers were talking outside of the Seattle Library. Jeff (our fearless leader) starts getting into it with Brett about softball the next day, and then acts out what's going to happen when Brett pitches to Jeff (homerun, combined with Sammy Sosa's theatrics and some extracurriculars). That is generally forgotten until...

Sunday! Softball day. Jeff's having a rough go at the softball thing when all of a sudden he steps up to the plate and Brett's pitching. What happens? Boom, homerun, and myself, Red, tworsandtwols and the baserunners all turn home plate into a walk-off jump station.

Lookout Landing softball... where calling your shot, realizing your potential, and ignoring the local sports team all make for an amazing day. Can't wait for the next one.

Good job on that double.

I'm shocked property damage was minimal today.

Even Robert hit a double!

But that really didn’t have much to do with park dimensions. Or the wind blowing out to left-center.

Or the left fielder and third baseman playing six and eight feet from the batter

Even though it hurt our team, on a personal level I thought that double was awesome.

Good to see all the work you’ve put in pay off.

Best moment of that Q/A...

When the guy with his own awesome ‘stache asked Bob a question… it was facial hair heaven.

USSM is old and fat

Most of LL was within 5 years of each other. So we had the physical advantage.

by Robert on Jun 15, 2008 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No punches were thrown

But Dave rather talk to us so I guess that means we won (?)

Were the USSMs and LLs divided?

I have to say

That mouse scares me. A lot. It looks as if it broke it’s legs and is suffocating.

To me it looks like something from Donnie Darko.

Ah.

Now I know what team I’d have to play for if I ever showed up for softball…

by rtang on Jun 16, 2008 12:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well I'm nowhere near as eloquent as him

But basically it boiled down to:
-Getting an ‘impact’ player who will be better at their position than anyone else draftable at that point
-A reliever, and a great bullpen specifically, helps the entire starting rotation (and he allluded to Morrow moving)
-He’s really confident in Fields’ s stuff

Then again, I didn’t know enough about the other options available to really say who I thought would be a better pick.

by Fett42 on Jun 16, 2008 12:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to say, after watching his performance in the CWS...

I’m pretty fond of his stuff as well. High-90s, late breaking (it broke like a heavy splitter) 12-6 ++curve that runs about 82-87, change in the mid 70s. Fastball was pretty straight, but he located well, and the interview w/ the coaching staff made it seem as though he had pretty good control.

The only downside I saw was the changeup was a showme, complete with different arm angle. It’s definitely not a ML pitch yet.

by Faux on Jun 16, 2008 7:40 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, if he's going to be a reliever, he really doesn't need a third pitch that badly at this point

and his FB/curve combo is probably near ML-ready at this point. He’s got a little time to develop that pitch anyway

by seattlebruin on Jun 16, 2008 8:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem comes from LHB.

That curve goes straight down, but I didn’t see one on the outer half to lefties. He also doesn’t have much deception, he seems to fly open a little and throw his arm over (watching the dvr right now).

I’d like to see a better change because of his motion. I think he’ll start off getting rocked by LH fastball hitters, especially when they start being able to get around on inside fastballs (his current solution for lefties). If his FB had more movement, I wouldn’t be as worried.

by Faux on Jun 16, 2008 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope he *strongly* alluded to Morrow moving to the rotation

Otherwise the rest of that answer is not satisfactory. It doesn’t really matter if Fields was the best player available, we’re not a team in a position to draft that way right now when we have pressing needs all over the place that have to be addressed. Contending teams can do that, we’re obviously not close to being a contending team.

The only way I’d be okay with it is if Fields is meant to act as Morrow’s replacement in the bullpen while he’s stretched out, and I just have no faith in them to actually do that.

by OlSalty on Jun 16, 2008 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It took some reading between the lines, but I think it was implied.

It’s nowhere near being his decision, though, so who knows.

I refuse to believe this happened

Because the Jeff I saw in the batters box never hit the ball more than 100 feet

I'd rather know a little about a lot than a lot about a little

I was trying to groove it--he was on my team.

I got excited because it tied the game (and it was a three run shot!) but I should’ve done the Brad Lidge reaction. Because that was the longest home run hit all day.

That’s because I was. It’s been a LONG weekend.

Didn't go to the meeting

since I don’t have any money. Softball was fun though, I got some lucky solid contact. I’m not much of a home run hitter, just opposite field line drives usually.

One of the 3 best hitters and is almost definitely the best in the field.

Next time LL has a football game I will try and attend. No one will be able to cover me.

what I have seen in the pictures theres not exactly a ton of athletes at LL.

He's extremely fast

I’m fairly fast myself, and I can’t keep up with him without some deep help

Try playing basketball against Brayden

I’ve never cried while playing a game before, but I’m pretty sure I would after his 30th rejection bounces off of my face

I hate basketball

It’s one of the few sports I’ve ever tried where coordination and quickness just don’t make up for not being built like an athlete

by Graham on Jun 16, 2008 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It can

but you have to be freakishly coordinated and quick

by ningwers on Jun 16, 2008 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've gotten used to it over time

unless of course I’m at a urinal

But a clone army of Braydens would be scary as all fuck

I’m going to have to consider cloning myself now!

I'm really going to have to work on my power stroke

almost all of my hits were loopers over the infielders’ heads that got down for singles. I hit for a lot more power at the previous LL Softball that only what, five of us got to attend.

I am still amused by our silent walkoff-style beatdown of Jeff. It was really eerie for its quietness.

I am forsaken by god...

I was all set to go to the event when I was struck with a 100+ degree fever and serious head pain. $20 bucks and fun times wasted :(
