If se should change the title from “nobody cares about your fantasy team” to “nobody cares about your mlb team”. Nobody in this organization seems to. /cue heads rolling

Awesome.

Anybody see the post at USSM about Willie Ballgame wanting to get the fuck outta here?

Boy, we’re screwed now.

See, shit like this why I despise Bloomquist.

At first, it was because he was awful and the team played him way too much, so I resented his presence but didn’t really blame him. But I keep hearing more and more of his obscenely ignorant opinion of himself, and I just want to punch him.

You’re lucky to have a job anywhere, lady. Good luck in your travels.

He sounds like a complete douchebag.

I don’t like my scrappy white ballplayers acting like douchebags.

by BrianL on Jun 15, 2008 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, guys like him aren't supposed to be prima donnas.

All this “all I need is a chance” shit is wearing thin. He’s been given a ton of chances over his career, and he’s proved to be a versatile defensive sub and a pinch-runner. That’s it. There’s nothing else he does well. I’m not saying those talents have no value, but there’s just a gigantic gap between how valuable he is and how valuable he is in his own mind.

Then again, if I saw Miguel Cairo getting way more playing time than me, I’d be fucking furious.

by Teej on Jun 15, 2008 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Douchebag he may be... but somehow I think he's smarter then the FO
"I hate even talking about chemistry," Bloomquist said. "What is it? Do you mesh well together, don’t mesh; I don’t know. I’ve been on the team where guys hated each other, but you know what? When it came time to play, we were good. I’ve been on teams where everyone seems to get along and like each other, and we don’t play well. I think that ‘chemistry’ is an overrated term. I know this team gets along well together. I don’t know of anyone who dislikes anyone else on this team. We’re all a bunch of good dudes, I think."

To be fair, you want your players to believe they're the best.

You want them to be confident and think they’re great…you can’t really cut it at baseball if you think you suck.

I agree.

As I mentioned below, I have no problem with Willie being confident; you have to have that mentality as a professional athlete. My beef is with the seldom-veiled remarks claiming that he hasn’t been given enough of a shot by the Mariners.

But at the same time, seriously, I don’t care how shitty you are, if Miguel Cairo is a regular and you’re on the bench, you probably have a right to be pissed off.

Willie Blooquist

Totally unreasonable view of himself, totally reasonable view of everything else?

by Teej on Jun 15, 2008 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not at all.

I’d just like him to stop insinuating that he’s never been given a fair shake.

by Teej on Jun 15, 2008 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And to be clear,

I’m talking more about previous interviews than this one specifically.

by Teej on Jun 15, 2008 8:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah.

He may be a complete douchebag (I remember hearing about him being a dick in a club) but all athletes have egos.

Also he would get a ton more playing time in the NL because of more PH opportunites and double switches and the like.

Sexson and the Mariners is another.

I'm not sure that they dislike each other.

I’ve had spats with coworkers and friends and within a few days we were fine. They probably aren’t friends but I would be surprised if Wash and Johjima actively disliked eachother.

Is the 18-hole playoff a U.S. Open-specific thing?

Because I was assuming it was a one-hole playoff immediately.

by Teej on Jun 15, 2008 8:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As far as I know, each tournament has their own rules on tie-breakers.

The media did say, though, the U.S. Open has always had an 18-hole playoff followed by sudden death. I think it’s the right call considering this is a major tournament.

by Wilder. on Jun 15, 2008 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

For the non golfers, here's the playoff rules

Masters: sudden death playoff.
U.S. Open: 18 hole playoff on the Monday after.
British Open: four hole aggregate score playoff.
PGA Championship: sudden death playoff.

All other PGA Tour events have sudden death playoffs.

I’d be up for trying him out.

Tiger Woods is already bigger than Michael Jordan was...

so if Michael was given the opportunity, then Tiger should already be given a roster spot.

How are you surprised by ANYTHING

the Mariners due, when it’s a negative context. Sure if we trade Putz for Jay Bruce, or get someone, anyone, to take Johjima, Washburn, Silva, Sexson, Yuni, Cairo, or Vidro and get anything in return, I’ll be surprised, if we win a series against anyone (except Boston), I’ll be surprised, but even if we lose 15 in a row, or get shut out for 60 straight innings, or let up 9 runs up in the 1st inning for 5 consecutive games, I will NOT be surprised.

“It’s been terrible. We find a different way to lose every night…we’re just not good. We haven’t shown any signs of turning it around. It’s frustrating. It’s embarrassing.”

We knew they were going to be worse than the FO and lots of national baseball reporters imagined, though we couldn’t believe they were going to be as bad Pecota et al. suggested. And then they found a whole new level of ineptitude, a sub-basement of ineptitude, that led to things like sweeps at home by the Nationals. And suddenly they aren’t just bad, in the mediocre way that we thought they’d be bad, they are historically bad, so awful that dignity of peculiar sort attaches to the guys who keep trying, or even just keep going through the motions without reflecting the magnitude of the disaster.

So Beltre squints, tries to hold up on a slider outside the zone and points to the first base ump. Just like when they were winning. And we think, same old Beltre and take an odd comfort there. And surprisingly, there are a lot of guys like this, even guys I wish weren’t on the team, like Turbo, and I’m finding it’s hard to keep a grudge when he’s still the same old Turbo. Felix is too great to be bothered, and that’s a comfort. I’m afraid Ichiro is drinking strange beer, but he’s still slapping at it.

But other guys are understandably distancing themselves from it all. Richie takes a weak swing or two and heads back to the dugout or ostriches himself to first. Bedard never looked like he wanted to be here. Yeah, 100 pitches, that’s what you’re paying for, that’s what you’re getting. WFB? That’s a surprise maybe.

So it’s 1961 and the Reds trade for Don Blasingame, though they keep using Elio Chacon a lot at 2B (mainly because Blasingame’s OPS+ was 52, which the Reds didn’t know at the time, just figured he sucked). One inning, Chacon makes errors on consecutive grounders and an irate Fred Hutchinson sends Blazer out for the next inning. A grounder slips under his glove, between his legs and rolls out to right field. After the game, the radio guys gather round and ask him about the error. And he says, “Chacon had second base so messed up nobody could play it.” End of interview. I love that story.

On the other hand, from what I’ve heard so far, the music in Chrono Trigger is damn near perfect.

I was at the game today

For the first time, I was pleased with the crowd. After that “homerun” there was nothing but booing from the crowd at every available opportunity. And after the next foul ball hit by the Nationals, the whole stadium was screaming “Fair Ball! Fair Ball!”. Probably my proudest moment to be a part of the fanbase as a whole.

So...

The umps were right, everybody was turning hostile and giving them shit for the wrong reasons… and that’s a good thing?

I realize SafeCo fans can be way too unemotional and apathetic, at times, but I don’t want them being fucking stupid either. Makes us all look bad either way.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Jun 16, 2008 1:06 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it is.

That was a ton of frustration coming out all at once, and it was good to see. It’s not as if the ball was clearly fair, either; it looked foul to me and everyone else sitting around me. We were wrong, and the ump got booed. I’m sure he’s capable of dealing with it. It made a boring-ass game way more enjoyable.

Brought to you by Carl's Jr.

by acblue on Jun 16, 2008 1:18 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thus...

Umps were right.
Fans were wrong and off base.
Frustration misdirected away from FO and team and onto non related targets.
Innocent victims can take some abuse, they’re ok.

You’re not convincing me this was awesome.

Fans are typically idiots.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Jun 16, 2008 4:12 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess it's just a difference of opinion.

The thing that made me angry was that the ball looked foul from my vantage point, and everyone sitting near the foul pole started flipping out as soon as he called it fair. There was also a fair amount of hesitation before the call, which always makes me wonder how sure the umpire was.

And really, the first few rounds of boos and the mass signaling of home run on an obviously foul ball was directed at the ump; the rest was directed at the team, and the loudest chorus of boos came at the end of the game.

And seriously, getting booed constantly is part of being an umpire, and they’re generally right when they get booed. It’s part of the job, and as Goose said below, if they aren’t able to ignore it, they’d have never made it to the majors.

Brought to you by Carl's Jr.

by acblue on Jun 16, 2008 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's just frustrated fans trying to find some fun in their misery.

It’s not making you look bad.

If fans are still willing to show up and pay money to watch this team play baseball, they can do whatever the hell they want, I’d say.

by Teej on Jun 16, 2008 1:20 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So that includes unwarranted ump abuse.

Brilliant.

Yeah, SafeCo’s fanbase really did some great things there.

If the fanbase really wants to make a statement that’ll show their frustrations and effect the right people… STOP FUCKING GOING TO GAMES.

Fans are typically idiots.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Jun 16, 2008 4:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand the 'stop going to games' argument.

I’m just never going to do it. I absolutely wish that the organization would get a clue, but I’m skeptical that a drop in attendance would do that. It will cause them to make changes, which seems to be quite obvious given what’s transpired today, but I don’t think they’ll be the right ones.

Live Major League Baseball is a product I’m willing to pay for. The Seattle Mariners are the only organization that provides that product in the area. Would I rather give my money to an organization that does things differently? Sure. But that’s not an option, for reasons of sentimentality and logistics; I’ll always be a Mariners fan (brand loyalty) and even if I weren’t, I live here and can’t afford to fly to the Bay Area ~10 times a year to see baseball.

If other people can bring themselves to stop going to games as an act of defiance, more power to them. Hopefully it works. Going to a handful of games a year is one of the few things I can afford to do that brings me a lot of happiness. Even when the M’s get absolutely shellacked, or play a boring team in a boring game, I love baseball so much that I have a blast. No one should be deprived of baseball because the front office refuses to acknowledge they have no idea how to build a successful franchise.

by NOLAmarinergirl on Jun 16, 2008 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, the umps take a lot of shit in general.

They’re used to it. They’re trained to handle it. A game does not go by without fans getting on them for calls. If they can’t handle it, they’re not umping in the bigs because they never make it that far.

by Gomez on Jun 16, 2008 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The fans acted like sports fans for a change.

That’s refreshing, so yes, I think it’s a good thing.

by BrianL on Jun 16, 2008 10:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that the fanbase's apathy is worse then any kind of activity

But this isn’t all THAT preferable. Other teams that have had home runs taken away had legit beefs. We have no legit beef here, the pole is still fair territory (regardless of how we feel about the rules), and the umpires got shit for getting the call right and enforcing the rules.

So basically the only time SafeCo fans can get loud and passionate is when they’re wrong as hell? Even when they saw the replays to confirm it they didn’t back off. It was ignorant, stubborn pride that kept them going.

Embarrassing.

Fans are typically idiots.

Not sure why people where I was were judging the umps

The 3rd base line isn’t a good perspective. I assumed it hit off the foul pole so I didn’t partake in the booing.
