Griffey ---> Tampa Bay Rays?
Indeed.. I was sitting here watching ESPNEWS and lo and behold, across the bottom of the screen came this little diddy..
"Ken Griffey Jr. considering waiving no-trade clause for a trade to the Tampa Bay Rays."
My first thought? WHEW! My second thought? Poor Rays. Although I guess it doesn't really matter because Andrew Freidman is 400 times better than Bavasi and won't give up any Jeff Clement style of prospect to get him.. But good for Griffey to possibly be on a winning team again.
It doesn't say there is a trade imminent, but the wording made it sound like there is something brewiing.

Griffey in Tampa could work well.
He’ll obviously DH there and will be in a hitting environment reminscent to his Kingdome days, and the most important aspect is he’ll actually be on a contender again. This could actually work well for the Rays. Of course if they play him in the field everyday, then forget everything I said, but I have a feeling the team knows how important defense is.
It would go against everything the new management has done since taking over.

One day
After Chuck Armstrong and Howard Lincoln die/retire, we may finally see the light of day.
Jl/Robert '08: Promise for a CoachCage tomorrow!
Why would they do that? They have an aging injury prone LH DH who sometimes masquerades as an outfielder signed much more cheaply who is better.
His name is Cliff Floyd.

The sticking point in all this speculation
Is that the Rays have no reason to make that trade, and there’s been no evidence at all that they’re even entertaining the possibility. Just because Griffey is willing doesn’t mean the Rays are, and until there is something substantive that suggests Tampa is actually pursuing him, I’m just going to assume they are smarter than that (because all evidence suggests that they are) and this is just mindless speculation from a sportswriter miscontrued as something it’s not.
I have a feeling Griffey no longer wants to come to Seattle anyway
At least not this season. I mean c’mon, why would he? Seattle is a last place team in turmoil, it’s not exactly a great situation for him to play his last year or two.
Tampa gets Jr. closer to his home.
But then . . . McGwire said he was leaving Oakland to get closer to his kid in SoCal. Before he signed with St. Louis.
Would he be worse than Gomes or Hinskie in RF?
And yes this is a serious question.

Not Hinske though
Hinske is hands down the worst RFer in MLB. I don’t think it’s close. I have a guy on my slow pitch softball team that would be better than Hinske is. Abysmal! I mega loathe RF Hinske.

Yes
But we’re not paying Hinske 10+ million.

Not the worst move they could make
especially if they think Griffey has upside as a DH over their current options. They only owe him for the season and he could potentially provide a boost in what has been a surprise pennant chase.
Sure, we know better, but they’re not on the hook beyond this year and they are absolutely stacked in their system. They can afford to drop a couple of prospects to take a shot at Junior.
I don't see a problem with them taking a gamble with junior
if they give up a c-prospect and maybe a marginal major league player. Stick him at dh and hope you get lightning in a bottle. He wouldhave to mentally refreshed playing for a winning team as well as having number 600 out of the way.
So what can we get from the rays for raul?
When JJ gets healthy maybe we can send him to the rays as well.
Dude no. J.P. Howell is awesome.
You can have Edwin, Niemann, Ruggiano, Talbot, whatever, but J.P. Howell is like our relief ace.

What about Sonnanstine?
You guys hate him, for some reason.
I love Sonny.
The people who hate him love Edwin because he throws hard and they underestimate what an awful walk ratio can to a pitcher.
