Celtics/Lakers Game 4 (we can also talk about beer)

Where do I even start? I know that there are only a few basketball fans here, and even I rank basketball pretty far down my list of favorite sports (especially since the whole Sonics/OKC thing started). But a classic matchup like Celtics vs. Lakers in the Finals has had me watching for the past week or so.

I don't know NBA history well enough to say for sure, but last night had to have been a historic comeback by the Celtics (not too mention a knife in the soul of the Lakers). Eddie House and Ray Allen (who looked washed up earlier in the playoffs) leading the comeback? KG hitting a big shot in crunch time? Paul Pierce refusing an MRI on his knee because he just wants to play?

This has been epic so far, and I missed a good portion of last night's game during my commute (I knew I should have just stopped at the bar to watch the game).

If you're not a basketball fan, I apologize for taking up space with this post. But if you thought last night's game kicked some serious ass, feel free to post your thoughts.

Fuck.

Largest comeback of all time based on total points down.

2nd largest halftime deficit overcome.

The funny thing is I didn’t feel safe with the lead because Kobe wasn’t playing well. If he was on, there’s no way we lose. But with him struggling, there’s no one to pick up the slack when Odom and Ariza and the gang start to cool off. The funny thing is that if I were to pick a team that could win 3 striaght with 2 being on the road it’s be the Lakers. I don’t think they will, but I wouldn’t be too surprised

I'm hoping against any Laker comeback because I'm rooting for the Celtics.

But I’m not breaking out the champagne just yet. Kobe could still explode and carry the Lakers, or they could figure out how to play four quarters all of a sudden. They’re a very hot/cold team, and I don’t want them to get hot.

The Celtics attitude of “now or never” does bode well for them however. The Lakers are mostly a really young team, so they probably think they can come back next year if they don’t win this year. The Celtics big boys are all up towards the decline phases of their careers, and I think they can smell their last chance at victory this year.

Screw Kobe.

I turned the game off after the 1st quarter, but was pleasantly surprised catching the recap on TV.

Being a fan of Kobe is like being a fan of Bonds.

by Wilder. on Jun 13, 2008 1:41 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No way!

Kobe is the best player alive. And so what if he’s an asshole, he hasn’t cheated (yes I know, Bonds hasn’t officially cheated). Kobe’s skills are something to marvel at. He’s unbelievable.

Maybe he is an asshole off the court, but when has that mattered around this blog?

by brayden04 on Jun 13, 2008 1:45 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kobe is an ass on the court, if you haven't noticed.

He is the Paul O’Neill of basketball. Smug bitches.

He is an ass, but so was MJ

MJ was not an ass on the court.

Unless you consider taking over the game because you are pissed is being an ass.

Abita.

Abita Amber is classic.
Like any good microbrewery, they rotate their beers based on the seasons. My favorite is Christmas Ale. My very favorite is AndyGator, but since it’s something like 12% alcohol, they can’t bottle it.

by NOLAmarinergirl on Jun 13, 2008 1:13 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sounds like it worth the trip to have it in person.

That’s like Cascade Celtic Copper that they have down in Cannon Beach, OR. It’s the best beer I’ve ever tried, but the only sell it in the Portland area, and it’s not bottled (tap only), so I can’t even bring any home when I go visit.

I’ve never tried the Celtic Copper but I’ll keep an eye out in August.

It's brewed somwhere in Portland, and I've only had it at the Driftwood Inn in Cannon Beach.

There’s no one thing that makes it great, it’s just perfectly balanced IMO. Not too light, not too dark, not too sweet, not too bitter. Mmmmm… I wish I could have one right now.

Tonight I’m going to experience the joy of Bud Light.

Lol, good point

Most people’s goal in college seems to get wasted. Mine is to enjoy the beer and get a light buzz. Call me weird. And I suppose the nutritional benefits help too.

by Fin on Jun 13, 2008 1:34 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Two Fat Tires.

Light beer, despite the name, gives unattractive beer guts because people drink it just to get wasted.

by NOLAmarinergirl on Jun 13, 2008 1:47 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sad.

Of course, it helps that it only takes two beers to get me fairly buzzed so…

Same here

I realize its kind of girly to have a low tolerance to alcohol, but I use it to my advantage, for nutritional reasons stated above.

Yeah unfortunately I am a tank

I’m a pretty big guy (usually solid but after freshmen year I have some work to do) so I routinely need 10-15 to get into a good buzz.

I figure if I work out 5 days a week and get stupid 2 days a week while working then by the end of the summer I’ll be in fine shape again (please don’t correct me haha).

by Thingray on Jun 13, 2008 5:05 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah that's why I said good buzz.

I’ll be buzzed after a few, but I don’t get out of control until 15+. I’ve only thrown up like 5 times and blacked out twice in my life, which compared to a lot of other kids I know is very little. I’ve always been able to handle alcohol pretty well. Like the last time I puked I had 25 beers in 2 hours and then smoked. The time beofre that I finished a whole bottle of svedka vodka in 45 min.

Moral: I’m stupid

Go Nova

by dbroncos31 on Jun 13, 2008 5:08 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I went and did a few calculations

15 12oz beers drank in the course of two hours would give a 300lb person a BAC of about .15 which would probably be considered a decent buzz. For me (a 180lb guy) that would put me at .27 which is blind “how’d I get home last night” or “how’d I end up in this dumpster by the library” drunk. And if you are a petite 110 lbs that would land you at .46 which is in a coma or dead.

Moral: I could see it taking that many beers for some people.

by nwtrev on Jun 13, 2008 5:44 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

According to AlcoholEDU

the night I drank the bottle of vodka my BAC was .45 but theres no way that could be.

For the record I’m like 6’ 1” 190

Go Nova

by dbroncos31 on Jun 13, 2008 5:47 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

According to

Coolnurse you would have been at .39 assuming a 750-ml standard bottle at 40% alcohol. That’s damn near a coma as well. I’ve heard of numbers like .33 when people are still standing but those are hard core alcoholics. It is possibly you puked out a bunch before it got absorbed.

I don’t think you should do that again.

Diet sodas have a similar effect on the body

The 'everything' part is the problem.

If it was used sparingly in things like candies and such, things which should be eaten sparingly anyway, it wouldn’t be a big deal. But it’s in “healthy” food as well. Your body can’t process it effectively, so it’s 1000% worse than refined sugar in terms of empty calories. Ingesting enough of it fucks up your metabolism terribly.

Salt dehydrates them

http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_073.html

There isn’t a lot of science in that link but if I remember correctly the salt, which is highly absorbent (I used it to successfully remove red wine from a white carpet) basically just absorbs the slug. A slug doesn’t have any skin or exoskeleton to protect it

way better than anything else. Slugs can’t resist any beer – you can give them the cheapest, skunkiest beer ever and they’ll still come flocking to their grave.

Osmotic pressure across their skin

Water flows across the barrier in order to match concentration on the outside and the inside. Unfortunately the external concentration is so high (because hey you just poured salt on it) that it sucks all the water out of the slug.

Fortunately I have been educated not to make these mistakes

I guess even though I am under 21, I’ve already had the good microbrews (Mac & Jack’s, Pyramid Hefweisen, Fat Tire), so after having those I just can’t force crappy macrobrew beer anymore.

That game was a mess...

The Celtics are just tougher than the Lakers. There is no way to quantify it, it’s just something I’ve noticed.

The Lakers have 3 tough players on their team. Kobe, obviously. The other two are the backup pg (Farmar) and the role-playing pg (D. Fisher). Nobody else on the team is tough. I’m not talking about physically tough, otherwise Turiaf would qualify, I’m talking about basketball tough. Being able to do simple things, that while under intense defensive pressure, are really tough to do. You see the Celtics amped up the defensive pressure in the second half, and the Lakers went to shit.

Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol are bums. Yeah, when things are going well, those two are tough to stop. But when things get tough, those guys check out. My favorite moment of the NBA playoffs was in game 3, when KG and Gasol went for a rebound, and it bounced off both their hands and went in for a Laker bucket. Gasol ran back down the court thumping his chest. This was his second basket of the game, and it’s late 3rd quarter. You don’t pound your chest when you are getting shutdown by your individual oppponent, when you get credited with a basket that you didn’t even score by yourself. That’s just sorry.

Gasol and Odom are the reasons the Lakers are losing. James Posey and Paul Pierce are the reason the Celtics are winning.

by brayden04 on Jun 13, 2008 1:44 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Haha

Looking back on my post, it’s so anti-LL. I mean, not quantifying things? Talking about someone being tough and getting the job done in clutch situations?!

But I guess basketball is just different than baseball. Or I’m not quite the genius Graham is.

Why would you care about such useless stats?

What about bench points? And first quarter three-point shooting percentage??

I loved game three when post-game, Jon Barry goes “Bench points don’t matter! I don’t even keep track of those, even though I know the Lakers had (x) and the Celtics had (y), but bench points don’t matter!” as if 50% of his statement had not directly contradicted the other 50%.

I bet.

I heard the first half on radio from work, then missed all but the last 15 minutes or so driving home. I didn’t even turn the radio on because the Celtics were getting hammered. I knew I should have listened to my instincts and stopped at the bar to catch the second half instead of going home.

The Celtics are superior because they have good chemistry

and proven leadership in Ray Allen.

-sorry, someone had to say it.

I generally despise all sports things Boston and Los Angeles. Boston becuase, well, it’s Boston and LA because I’m from Northern California and I’ll lose my NorCal street cred if I root for anything from LA. But this is some good basketball so I’m just enjoying it for what it is.

by nwtrev on Jun 13, 2008 2:11 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd say Pierce is the leader of that team.

They just have more guys on the Celtics that can step up and carry the team for a stretch than the Lakers do.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 13, 2008 2:18 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pierce is really been awesome this series

I’d never seen him really step up like he has this Finals. I mean, he played well back when the Celtics were last relevant, in the early 2000s when they had a good Antoine Walker. But nothing like this. He’s developing that killer attitude that Kobe is so well known for.

by brayden04 on Jun 13, 2008 2:22 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know.

I thought KG was the “ace”, Pierce was the “2”, and Allen was the “3”, but it’s almost been Pierce, Allen, KG (or even House last night)..

by Thingray on Jun 13, 2008 2:24 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

KG

Could have been the best PF to ever play if he maxed out his skillset. Too bad he settles for 20 ft jumpers and fadeaways. There is no player who could match his athleticism, length, skills and desire. But he just shys away from contact too much. Maybe he gets too hyped up or something. He’s still a great player, possibly top-5, definitely top-10 PF.

by brayden04 on Jun 13, 2008 2:27 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Supposedly he hadn't slept in days before the finals.

You look at him and he should be able to score at will, he just doesn’t seem to want to take it to the hole on a regular basis.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 13, 2008 2:29 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

To be able to do what he has done is pretty impressive, not sleeping after NBA games.

I can’t imagine that. But yeah, there is absolutely no reason he shouldn’t take Gasol to the rack everytime. Unless he is being doubleteamed. Why it took so long for Doc to play Posey, Ray, and Pierce together I’ll never know.

I’d put Ray at the 1, House 2, Pierce 3, Posey 4, KG 5. Then throw the ball into KG, have him go to work. He’ll score 70% on Gasol. If he gets doubled, you have shooters all around. If someone runs at them, they are all capable of either taking it to the hoop or one dribble pullups. Maybe House can’t get to the rack, but spread the Lakers out. Geez.

Kobe’s a great defender, you have to counter that somehow. Can’t let him do whatever he wants, which is what he does when he guards a non-shooter like Rondo.

by brayden04 on Jun 13, 2008 2:34 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Unless he gets in foul trouble.

Which is always possible, especially on the road.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 13, 2008 2:35 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well....yeah.

I just think that the Celtics have better guards than the Lakers, and if you go that small, Phil Jackson is going to have to counter to play defense. That means you’re guarding something like Farmar, Fisher, Vujacic, Kobe and Gasol. That’s much easier to guard than if they have someone like Radmonovic or Odom out there.

by brayden04 on Jun 13, 2008 2:37 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't know why Doc hasn't gone small more often in this series.

I think he’s fixated on being “tougher” than the Lakers, and he thinks that means being big.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on Jun 13, 2008 2:39 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs
