ESPN Rumblings
they've got a whole article up on the Managers and their status. The take they have on McLaren is pretty interesting.... basically they say that Bavasi isn't going to fire Mac to save his own butt, and then they go on to point out that the M's haven't fired a manager or a GM in mid-season since the 1988 season. Its a small little snippet but it basically shows what the M's are all about, ride it out make changes later, blah blah blah.
Here's the whole snippet.
McLaren: McLaren's many friends in the game weren't shocked by his McMeltdown this month -- just that it took so long in coming. But this is a team in major trouble, and (in a related development) a team now threatening to bring down everyone responsible for putting it together. So the question almost certainly isn't whether somebody is going to get fired. The more realistic questions are who and when.
According to baseball men familiar with how the Mariners operate, GM Bill Bavasi could be in more imminent danger than his manager. Maybe that's only because Bavasi has told everyone around him he is not going to fire McLaren to protect his own butt. But those are the vibes within the sport, anyway.
We should also remember that this team hasn't fired a manager or GM in midseason in 20 years (since Dick Balderson and Dick Williams in 1988). But given the expectations and that $118-million payroll, it's impossible to believe that this group could possibly survive what's looking like a 100-loss season. So "sooner or later," said one prominent baseball man, "this is going to get dicey."

It also says later down in the article I believe
or perhaps a different article that we have no trade pieces…
It says Lopez is overperforming (I still think we might find a taker on him, though I don’t see why we’d trade him, since Chen isn’t doing so hot, and we still have him for cheap)
It says that Raul can get us a few parts (which is true)
Bedard can’t be traded by Bavasi ( I don’t want to trade “low” anyways)
Silva, J-rod, Sexson are untradeable (true)
Beltre ,who’d want him at $12 million next year (who? Lots of people thats who)
JJ, it says we’d never trade him (I’ve always been a proponent of getting 2 years out of a closer then trading him at peak value, and I say if he gets 2 months of good production, if we can trade him for a team that wants a great bullpen arm and is willing to give a decent starting and/or power hitting prospect, why not trade him? The last thing a 100 loss team needs is 2 dynamite (3 if lowe ever gets his act together, 1 if Morrow gets a shot at starting) closers.

The Trop is an easy commute from Griffey’s home in Orlando. It’s a fun team on the rise, with a chance to win. And it’s an AL team that could mix in some DH-ing opportunities. So why not?“If I were them, I think it would be a great move,” said one veteran baseball man. “You run him out there with his big smile and his sweet swing, and it’s a drawing card. And even if he’s slipped, you’re putting another left-handed bat in the middle of that lineup. Could be scary.”

It was true in the 90s, it's way way way more true now.
Bonds > Griffey in production. And Bonds’ cost = $0.

God that's annoying.
I’d rather read uncapitalized sentences than see that picture again.

There's really no comparison
Bonds was a much better player than Griffey even before he allegedly took PEDs.
by JI on Jun 12, 2008 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You think Bonds was even better defensively in their respective primes?
I like midgets more than I should.
by Thingray on Jun 12, 2008 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No
But Bonds could have played a reasonable centerfield, and he was a much netter hitter and basestealer.
by JI on Jun 12, 2008 3:04 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll give you that.
But if I could go back and watch one game and see either one in their prime, I’d pick Griffey. I’m a sentimental fool.
I like midgets more than I should.
by Thingray on Jun 12, 2008 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd second that.
Since the Giants are my NL team (I think I’m cursed to support dreadful teams), I don’t have a team-sentimental point of view. But Griffey made the game look so easy, as well as making it look as though he was having a great time out there. I’d rather watch his swing than Bonds’ glowering face.

I should also attach the disclaimer that Bonds is one of the few atheletes I can honestly say I hate.
He never did anything to me or anyone I know, but I cannot stand the guy. If the M’s signed him I actually would refuse to attend games as long as he was on the roster.
I don’t know why, and I know it’s stupid and irrational, but I actually feel hatred for the man.
I like midgets more than I should.

Even if the addition of Bonds made the team's offense looker better?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/06/13/heyman.griffeyrays/index.html
Griffey, 39, has a no-trade clause but has told intimates that if the Rays stay in the race, he’d consider waiving his veto power to go home. Or close to home, anyway. Tampa is much nearer his Orlando area residence than any other big-league city. Griffey’s tony Isleworth community is about an hour from St. Petersburg, where the Rays play.

A lot of us have been rooting for them..I think we encourage dumb decisions
And it seems that having Cliff Floyd and Griffey on the same team is pretty redundant.
I fucking hate you Mariners

Apparently it’s not a good way to judge a ballplayer.

So how many people here would buy a Rays Griffey jersey?
Not me, but that’s because I don’t spend my $ on jerseys.
by Jed MC on Jun 13, 2008 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe a Rays Griffey T-Shirt
But what I noticed is the Devil Rays used to bring in a lot of old hall of famers as a place to finish their careers early on (Jose Canseco, Wade Boggs, Fred McGriff, etc). It would be funny if that trend continued with Griffey, but I thought the Rays have gotten smart since then. It seems the Mariners are the new Shady Acres for the MLB now.

There were some rumors
That Canseco signed here with a clause that he’d go in as a Ray into the HOF.

Na, Boggs is a douche anyhow.
Wore his Yankee ring to our jersey “celebration” and constantly takes - or should I say took - shots at the new management for “not knowing how to run a baseball team”.
