6/11: Open Game Thread, Part 2

If Gameday's any indication, we've got Good Felix today. But we also have Spectacular Marcum. Totally couldn't see this coming a mile away.

How many pitchers are signed solely for their hitting?

Meanwhile guys like Jason Bartlett and John McDonald are around solely for their defense.

Why is the strategy of having to pinch hit a .250/.300/.370 guy for a .170/.240/.260 guy so much more exciting than a DH?

It’s just stupid

I’m assuming you don’t watch NL baseball. Ever seen the manager have to choose between removing his starter in a 1-1 game, or letting him hit?

by JI on Jun 11, 2008 10:47 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah

And that sucks ass. I’d rather see him keep pitching awesome.

by patsfan on Jun 11, 2008 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed, besides that I generally dislike the DH

You got 25 men on the roster, should use more

by ColeFitz on Jun 11, 2008 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

It's a decision that shouldn't have to be made.

Regardless, leave the starter in unless he has a high pitch count, because if he gets out you’ve got the top of your order next inning most the time

And also most pinch-hitters suck

Why would you take out a really terrible hitter for a kind of terrible hitter when your starter was doing good?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say these hitters are not actually that good

Especially player A, and you could almost write it off as a sample size thing.

by BrettJMiller on Jun 11, 2008 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Player A was a pretty decent hitter.

And John Rodriguez (at the time) would have been the 4th best hitter in our lineup.

by JI on Jun 11, 2008 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

John Rodriguez had 183 ABs, which is not a big enough sample size to determine anything.

And plus it’s the NL where it’s easier to hit.

Something we can all agree on
“I’ve talked to all the teams numerous times,” said Jeff Borris, Bonds’ agent. “There’s not a stone that I’ve left unturned.” “We were able to get him a $19.2 million contract [with the Giants] based on those 2006 numbers,” Borris said. “And the numbers went up in 2007—and yet we can’t even get him a $390,000 deal with any team. Not a single team has any interest. It makes me suspicious.”

This pains me.

how to fight tickets in California

A friend of mine submitted a written declaration for speeding on the freeway; he was driving 93 in a 65, clearly in violation of the law. On his written declaration he wrote,”I’m not Guilty” with an orange crayon, misspelling “guilty”. The officer who cited him did not respond; my friend received a dismissal notice and his $270 in bail back in the mail. If the officer does not respond, your case is dismissed and all your bail is returned, regardless of the merits of your argument.

I still love Beltre...

Beltre K w/ o RISP: 15.6%
Beltre K w/ RISP: 28.6%

Hopefully.

It’s a small sample (which is a point I’d argue to people who thinks he should be traded based on his .avg at the moment), but I’m also wondering it’s large enough you can make some assumptions. I’m assuming no pitcher will throw him strikes with RISP, because they don’t need to.
