Great article
though he makes it sound like Griffey’s career is over.
Feel free to make a snarky comment about his career being over

You think we'd only give him a one year contract?

Barring some unforseen turnaround
I’d like to see Griffey retire at the end of this season. I really don’t think he’d want to be a backup, or would want to bounce around from team to team looking for a starting job. I don’t see how any contending team would have any interest in him being a regular.
My hope is that we trade someone we won’t miss to the Reds, Junior can have a three month victory lap, and we can feel a little less crappy about this season.
Junior won't approve a trade here
At least that’s what Jason Stark says

Jason Stark isn't even worth thinking about.
Other ESPN lackeys have reported that he will approve a trade. So who cares about it until it happens?
That was before the M's slide though
Crasnick was pretty doubtful in one of his chats. I don’t think Griffey wants in on this clusterfrak.

Both are old veterans without a high ceiling
Trade Geoff Baker straight up for him.

I dunno...
Last few weeks I’ve been pretty impressed with Baker’s performance at the keyboard. I think it might be a mistake to deal him.
He isn't that young, he has some veteran grit.
Didn’t he cover the Canada Blue Jays for like 10 years or something of that sort before coming to the Mariners?

Posnanski's been one of the best baseball writers around for quite a while now.
This is but another data point.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
Juniors 398th and final home run in his first go-round with the M's landed about thirty feet from me
beyond the centerfield fence at Safeco, in that area right next to the patio. It was the end of the season, and some guy jumped the fence to retrieve the ball and promptly got himself kicked out of the stadium, maybe arrested. If he got to keep the ball, it was all worth it.
Yep, that's Junior
Shame he didn’t have more motivation because he had all the talent in the world. There’s not a doubt in my mind that if you combined Ichiro’s dedication with Griffey’s talent you’d have the best player of all time.

Mind Boggling to even think of that, really

And a better Kingdome/Cinergy Field playing surface
His knees probably don’t turn to pudding playing home games on natural grass or Fieldturf, and his incredible numbers are probably even more incredible.
His knees weren't the issue.
It was more his leg muscles, which my guess would be related to his reputation for not taking things like pre-game stretching seriously. Hence my Ichiro comment.
Not his knees, yeah
but turf isn’t kind to your legs and joints as a whole. With the extra stress of the hard surface, anything could give.
You have summed up everything that was both
Beautiful and frustrating about watching Junior play. In terms of natural ability I do not know if I will ever see a young talent like him again.
I miss Junior
Even if Griffey does come back I can’t lie to myself, I’ll be happy. To see him hit 2 more HR’s in a mariners uniform, would be just amazing.

Beaut of an article.

That is such a perfectly delivered article
I almost feel bad pointing out the typo in Buck’s quote at the end, “Well, I sure like that Ken Girffey Jr” and being tempted to ask, “What does Ken Giraffey Jr has to do with this? Has Buck even been stringkkaked by Harry Canary?”
Round up Johnny Chimpo, Jerry Giraffe, and Arty the Alligator.
Bring ‘em in for a lineup.
One of the comments
on that page about retaining Griffey, Randy and A-Rod reminded me that one of my co-workers asked me about analyzing the scenario where those three had been retained up through now and what the win differential might be.
Of course it is impossible to weigh in all the factors that would change in those scenarios, but has anyone tried something like this to see what the difference would be year by year over the past decade? I would give it a go, but I don’t have all the tools at my disposal that some of you have.
I'm more like I am now than I've ever been.
Wouldn't have happened
A-Rod was a goner because no man turns down $250 million, Griffey really wanted to move back to Cincy… and not sure Unit, who already wasn’t happy at the time he was dealt, would’ve stayed.
That was just a dumb trade
Adam Jones didn’t hit free agency and get a $250 million offer. Or hit free agency and strongly desire to move back to his hometown.
Agreed
But with our brilliant management, his staying here had no shot in hell of happening. Different factors, same result.
I'm more like I am now than I've ever been.
Maybe he will come back to the Mariners when he is 35 and on the decline of his career
That probably would be his best chance of getting playing time with this team.

I assumed he was referring to Griffey, at which point I was calling him out for inferring that Griffey went back to Cincy without being traded.
Even if it was unintentional

Junior
Is the reason I ever became a Mariners fan. I loved him forever as a kid. If only I had caught on a little sooner that I shouldn’t have stuck with the team

The Kid
He’s the reason I love baseball. He’s the reason I played baseball. I felt like I owed the guy after I quit. If I could say anything to him as Mariner’s fan, I’d tell him that I cried when he left he was traded to the Reds, I cried myself to sleep.
Griff
He was the best. I bet even he agrees with Matthew and looks back at what could have been. Thanks for posting this Jeff.
