Is it possible
for us to be 5 games out already for 2009?
by eponymous_coward on May 8, 2008 10:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I just got home. Was not able to watch the game.
Now that I’ve seen the score…. I think this probably would have been the most hilarious game to watch of all time. Sorry I missed it.
...and now I'm here

I missed it too
Must’ve been an incredible game thread too.

No Griffey in left
Bad bad bad bad bad bad BAD

Jr > Ibanez in left
and realistically, who else could we get?
by IceStormV1 on May 8, 2008 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wlad is a better option in left than Griffey.
Far superior.
by BrianL on May 8, 2008 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is a foreign concept to me.
Could you elaborate, Matthew?
by BrianL on May 8, 2008 11:11 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
As an outfielder, Griffey is arguably the worst player in baseball
by Jeff on May 8, 2008 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I get that he's bad
but what elevates him to the special status of “worst player”?
by BrianL on May 8, 2008 11:25 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm glad you asked
here’s the argument as presented by somebody much smarter than I.
by Jeff on May 8, 2008 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jesus H. Christ
That’s…That’s pathetic.
by BrianL on May 8, 2008 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I read things like "worst player in baseball" all the time about different guys
but when it’s MGL doing the typing, that’s when I start paying attention.
by Jeff on May 8, 2008 11:33 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
This cements my belief
that Griffey (in the inevitable scenario in which he becomes a Mariner again) should have a contract stipulation that only allows him to serve as a DH.
by BrianL on May 8, 2008 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not convinced that his defense can be that horrible.
Not good? Yes.
I’m fully willing to concede that a /- 100 OPS corner outfielder with shit defense isn’t helping anything, but worst player? I very much doubt it.
I still think it would be fun to quantify just how terrible David Eckstein is.

I just saw it, but it’s not the same when it is not live.

I wasn't that impressed.
Ritchie looked like the oversized and undercoordinated
kid who gets recruited for freshman football and
doesn’t know what position to play so they just throw
him out there and say ‘hit someone’.
Not only that, the call of the fight by Dave Sims was positively
sucktastic and pitiful.
Thumbs down.
by lyleleander on May 8, 2008 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was at least interesting.
I’m not sure if it was worth the unpleasantness that followed it, though.
by acblue on May 8, 2008 10:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was great.
Absolutely friggin EPIC. I was lucky enough to be at the game, in a luxury suite and we had the unfiltered direct feed from the Safeco Field closed circuit TV system in there – camera angles Fox wasn’t always using. From the replays I saw, I’m about 90% sure Felix clocked one of the Rangers – couldn’t see who – in the head, which is why Joh pulled him away on the 2nd base line. When he went into the dugout with his jacket on he looked like he definitely thought he was going to have to hit the shower. About an inning later (right after they pulled Gabbard), they showed the same Ranger (again, couldn’t tell who) bleeding from the mouth in the dugout and holding an ice pack to his face. We don’t need to stinkin Jose Guillen… Felix will shank you good and not get caught!
Richie charging the mound was aweosme in its own right. Laird set up something low – looked inside, around knee level – and the pitch missed by a good 4+ feet. It wasn’t as close to Richie as he made it out to be… From the replay all I could sense is that one got away from Gabbard. Richie just really seemed to be looking for a fight – something to vent his frustration and maybe light a fire. It made an otherwise awful game fun to watch, but the spark never caught anything.

Boring
This just in. M’s STILL BORING and will be even if they bring Griffey back. Those in the front office, time to fall on your tridents. Save face.

I have a horrible feeling
we’re about to see the debut of Jeff Clement as a 1B.
by BrianL on May 8, 2008 10:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
cuz we know the org doesn't have faith in him as a catcher pretty much
by vkut79 on May 8, 2008 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
First time ever playing 1B
and it’s at the ML level. I’d say that’s pretty damn bad.
by BrianL on May 8, 2008 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Can it be as bad defensively as Richie?

Stop with this comparison
Piazza only shifted to first when he was old and completely broken. Clement’s still young enough that he won’t be terrible. I’d rather see him behind the plate, but he’s not going to be a Piazza-level disaster at first.

My point is, that unless the guy is an infielder to begin with
you can’t just throw him out there in major league game and expect him not to embarrass himself. It’s a bad idea.

With Clement and Wlad already on the club, there’s no one else we can look forward to getting callups once the wheels finally fall off.

Felix, Bedard, Beltre, Clement, Wlad, Ichiro, Putz, and maybe Loafie can stay.
I guess there’s no reason to disassemble the bullpen either. But after that pretty much nuke everyone.

if we lose him, we’ll lose LFoJL tag and lots of amusing bloop singles to right field as well as the Will Jose Lopez Swing at the First Pitch Watch
by seattlebruin on May 9, 2008 12:45 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Positive:
Sexson will no be re-signed by the Mariners this offseason. Every player who has put up any sort of fight after Lou was traded hasn’t lasted on this team beyond the current season. Recent examples are Guillen and Ellison. Fighting doesn’t promote a “fan-friendly” environment. Sexson’s fate has been sealed, but at least he will leave us with a better feeling about him.
And whoever is the marketing director of the Mariners needs to be fired. Armstrong, from a quote in another thread, said earlier to day that they were trying to cater to women and children more. Who the fuck came up with this idea?! Women want to leave before the 5th inning and children have no money! We need to turn this shit around and signing Bonds, Canseco, Paul O’Neill, and Nolan Ryan, will light a fire under this franchise’s ass.
