OT: Family Guy sucks
What happened? What the hell happened? At one point in time I'd laugh my ass off watching it. At the very least it would get me to chuckle. After watching last week's episode, all I felt was a resounding "meh."
I need new entertainment. With House only on once a week and having burned through Monty Python's Flying Circus a half-dozen times, I'm short on television amusement in my life. Family Guy can no longer fill this gaping void in my soul.
Lookout Landing, help me. I'm losing the will to laugh.

Greatest TV show in history.
Well, greatest comedy. The Wire is the greatest TV show in history.
But Bob and David are truly geniuses.
I'm giving them one last try.
They have a solid track record, they deserve one more shot before they are DFAed.
It has its moments...keeps me coming back.
Kind of like the Mariners
I fucking hate you Mariners
Family Guy jumped the shark for me last episode
Everything that used to be funny is gone. No stories, Stewie is openly gay now, too many (boring) cutaways, recycled jokes
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
Well so far today's episode
has gotten a few laughs from me. Better than last week.
Agreed
I’ve becoming more critical with each episode, but so far its been good tonight.
I fucking hate you Mariners
I haven't laughed once.
The Simpsons at least had ten good years in them >:(

It's not a great episode
I haven’t laughed much either
but it’s not the utter trainwreck that was last weeks. And at this point, I’ll take it
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
Arrested Development is the best show in the history of human creation
I’ve watched them all many times and I still laugh my ass off
Best show on TV.
Buy the DVDs. Each epsiode is worth at least five different viewings.
Best show ever
You can watch the episodes here for free

I enjoyed the dead frog part
I fucking hate you Mariners
I thought that was the worst part of the entire episode
they’ve done that joke a billion times. It’s the deadest of dead memes, deader than a Rickroll.
by JI on May 4, 2008 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions
agreed
they do the drawn out thing every episode now and it’s not funny anymore
The original fall knee wonka time was hilarious. Not so much anymore
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
I laughed my ass off during the original knee thing.
Now? Not funny. Not funny at all.
It was very symbolic of the Mariner's playoff chances
I fucking hate you Mariners
More along the lines of the Family Guy of old
i.e. not completely predictable
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
Yeah...me too.
Got a genuine laugh out of me there.
Well today was an improvement.
Still has a long ways to go, though.
It's wierd
because usually shows don’t usually drop off this drastically in the middle of a season. the Star Wars parody was hilarious.

South Park ruined Family Guy for me
Since then I’ve gotten my television comedy fix via Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 30 Rock, Stella, old Kids in the Hall dvds, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and all the standards (Venture Bros, Scrubs, Office, old Simpsons, South Park, etc).
The artist formerly known as Katal
I think South Park ruined Family Guy for the creators
It’s like they took the concept of Manatee Jokes and took it as something to be proud of and put more in after that episode was created
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
The cartoon wars
were such an amazing pair of episodes… I loved them

The Same Thing Happened to the Simpsons
By mixing wit with bawdy humor, the Simpsons seasons 2-8 were hilarious. Now completely removed of any aspects of intelligent comedy, the episodes are practically unwatchable. But as JI mentioned, at least they were able to sustain such greatness for a longer period. For me, Family Guy was dross as soon as they returned to television.
by JoeyJoJoJuniorShabadoo on May 4, 2008 10:36 PM PDT reply actions
eh they had a couple good years
the first season back was really good—the faster more rapid fire cutaway jokes were still fresh. It felt like Family Guy 2.0. They worked because they weren’t expected, now they’re just recycling all their material and repeating the same thing over again. If you’d never seen Family Guy before, you might have found tonight’s episode to be funny.

The thing that kills me aobut the Simpsons
is that there is still some good left inside of there somewhere, if only they were to search for it: the movie was great, but the show has been utter crap for the better part of a decade.

It's kinda hard to watch the early episodes with the obnoxious laugh track,
but yes, Sports Night was fantastic.
Going to 4th OT
This is becoming like the 23 inning Padres game two weeks ago. I was going to go to bed, but I think I am going to watch this game until it ends.
Both teams are already exhausted. They game played two regulation length games. If the Padres can go 2.5 regulation length games, we should be able to eke out another period and a half from these guys.
Damn reply seems to have evaded me.
Oh, and sorry for hijacking this thread; don’t know where else to take it.
Maybe because Seth is a predominately Jewish name?
by Liebkartoffel on May 5, 2008 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Also, I'm pretty sure Seth McFarlane isn't jewish, at least judging from his surname.
by Liebkartoffel on May 5, 2008 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions
He could be 1/2 Jew on his mom's side and took his dad's name.
Just a guess – I’m not doing research on that.
Family guy = Over the Hill veteran?
I think the thing that makes South Park still funny year after year is they tie current events into their episode plots (despite them I think being pretty creative in others). Also, they drop memes once they are dead, such as killing Kenny every episode.
Family guy on the other hand, use the same jokes or comedic timing to where you see the same pattern all the time and get bored of it. But instead of dropping it and coming up with new stuff, they will bring it up over and over again, like Brian’s novel and stuff like that. After the 7th or 8th time of bringing up the stupid novel, its just not funny anymore, or Stewie being gay, I don’t think its that funny, and rather than just drop the gay thing, they bring it up even more often.
Bah, hopefully Family Guy will be comeback show of the year in 2009.
My suggestions, some of which have been mentioned already:
Mr. Show
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Arrested Development
Sports Night
Stella
The Office (I’d recommend the original over the American version, but they’re both great.)
The Critic (if you can find it on DVD)
Scrubs
30 Rock
Add two:
Tom Goes to the Mayor
Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!

ATHF has faded this season too.
Not nearly as funny as it used to be.
I like midgets more than I should.
Agreed.
But I have to admit, I’m not usually impressed by any ATHF episodes when I watch them for the first time. Once I get them on DVD and watch them multiple times, I start appreciating them a lot more. The first viewing of an episode is pretty much just an 11-minute “what the fuck?” moment for me.
I agree with all of those, and would add
The Soup and Cheap Seats, which are basically the same show

Family Guy is garbage
Watch Futurama (start with season one)
Scrubs.
Dr. Cox is all the cranky doctor who hates people anybody will ever need.
Hard work never killed nobody, but I won't take my chances.
This show has been brutally underrated for seven years,
so I don’t expect it to change. But for the love of fuck, there’s not an unfunny episode in the whole lot.
It's gotten worse
but I could watch the first few seasons over and over all year long.
I see it about two steps below that
from really funny to averagely, though that still makes it better than most crap they put on the air.
House kinda ruined Scrubs for me though. I want them to talk more about the medicine and less about Carla’s neuroses.
If you watch the first season, Scrubs actually had an
edge to it, and the main character was an actual, human adult. Now it’s just random, “zany” fantasies followed by half-assed attempts to shoehorn the janitor character in every episode. I used to love the show, but it hasn’t really been worth watching since season 5 or so.
by Liebkartoffel on May 5, 2008 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree
I could watch early season scrubs without ever getting tired of them. It has gotten worse, although in fairness, it’s really hard to stay that good for a long time. I still watch it, but I’d rather watch it in syndication than the new ones.
Tools Whore
Sign Bonds!
Why do people love House so much? It's the most formulaic show ever.
Someone has a horrible illness. No one can tell what it is. House is cranky and everyone thinks his ideas are crazy. He figures it out and saves the patient.
And repeat.
Well the dialogue is strong, but that doesn't seem like a good enough reason.
Watching House is like watching a baseball team that you knew was gonna lose everyday in the same way, but you tuned in anyway.
Oh wait…
I didn't want to bring it up,
but I really can’t stand this show. The LL community always has awesome recommendations when it comes to entertainment, but this is one show that I just can’t watch. Hugh Laurie makes me want to jump off a bridge.
Ditto above on the dialogue
but I wanted to mention that the fact that the plot is formulaic is good to me. In my opinion, it makes the show more realistic. Our lives are pretty formulaic.
I have found that I cannot stand 99%+ of live-action T.V. shows for more than 3 years because it just starts getting ridiculous the stuns they end up writing in to try and “keep the show fresh”. If you have to distract people with plot devices, then your writing sucks.
Man, I've been reading these "mystery" books, by some
moron named “Arthur Conan Doyle.” The plot’s always exactly the same: someone dies or something gets stolen, this “detective” guy does some shit, and then he “solves” the case. Christ, it’s boring.
If the formula works, stick with it…Though of course I’m hoping that they realize that once the formula stops working, it’s better to just end the whole damn thing.

I can't mention all of my favorite TV shows for fear of getting LFoJL-ed
but the rest are
The Office
The Universe
Cash Cab
Sportscenter
High Stakes Poker (love the banter and that it’s not edited nearly as heavily as most other poker shows)
What's that supposed to mean?

Shows you like but are scared for meme joke retribution:
1. Shot of Love with Tila Tequila
2. Desperate Housewives
3. Sex and the City
4. Beverly Hills 90210 reruns
5. Ugly Betty
Naw, none of the above
- F.R.I.E.N.D.S
- Charm School: Flavor of Love Girls
- I Love New York
- Next
I try to watch NEXT sometimes
just for the “oh my God it’s so bad it’s funny” factor, but I am just unable. It’s so awkward that I literally hide my face for half the episode because I can’t even watch the screen. I feel embarrassed, like I’m actually right there during a horribly uncomfortable moment and I want nothing more than to simply disappear. I’m embarrassed for the people on the show, and for humanity itself.
I could say that about most reality shows, but this one - in my mind - is on its own level.
I can't remember which one Next is
but in college, it was a favorite pasttime of ours to begin our pre-drinking to VH1 reality shows.
there was some show
where the person would go out on a date with the parent of a person and then choose based on that, which one to blind date. It was awesomeness in horrible entertainment.
Date my mom
one of the scripted ones, unfortunately. Same with Parental Control. Thankfully, as far as we know, Next isn’t scripted, because that would have ruined 95% of the fun.
I already lost Parently Control to this bullshit after my friend's GF went on the show
and we were like “fuck this it’s totally scripted.”
Losing entertainment to an obvious truth sucks
Next amuses me
partly because I know quite a few girls who have been asked to be on that show. Pretty much all of my friends who are reasonably attractive.
Also, the hilarious awkwardness
