Xbox Live Connection Help.

I just bought the Xbox 360 Wireless adapter today to hook up to Xbox Live. When I run the Xbox Live connection test, the MTU test fails everytime. I called Xbox's support hotline, they told me to call Belkin (I'm hooked up to the Internet with a Belkin Wireless USB Utility which get the wireless network from a Actiontec "Wireless-Ready" Gateway), who couldn't help me with changing the MTU configuration. Belkin then told me to call the Xbox support hotline again, I told them the new information I found out (including the fact about the Actiontec Gateway) and they told me to call Actiontec. I did that and a recording told me to call Qwest (who's my Internet service provider). I called them and asked them how to change the MTU configuration on the Actiontec Gateway but the support technician couldn't help me. I'm now asking you guys, can anyone help me who has had this problem before? Thanks in advance.

Wireless?

Well there’s your first problem. Just bite the bullet and run some CAT5e to your 360.

Run some CAT5e network cable from your router to the place where your 360 is.

Build network drops on both ends of the cable you’ve run. Once you have the network drops built, connect a patch cable from your router to network drop A, then another patch cable from your 360 to network drop B.

You’ll need a spool of CAT5e, a punch tool, two CAT5e/6 drops, and two RJ45-head CAT5e patch cables.

You can get all of this at Fry’s.

Yeah, not only is that incredibly complicated,

it probably wouldn’t work in the first place. See our Actiontec Gateway is in my dad’s room and my Xbox is in my room.

Which is why you run the CAT5e on the -outside- of the house.

Same thing you do with your coaxial cable and phone lines.

Oh come now, Coach.

It’s a simple procedure.

Just run the cable on the exterior of your house, drill an opening in the walls for the network drop, build said network drop (following scheme-A preferably), and connect both ends to their respective devices.

Here is a simple guide to building your own home network infrastructure.

I managed to hook up Xbox Live on my Dialup.

And I played Burnout Paradise with no lagging whatsoever. But after the gree one month trial ends, im not renewing the Gold. I just care about the Marketplace.

Yeh

It cut me off a few times as soon as I got on live, but after 2-4 cutoffs, it ran REAL smoothely…n im serious when I say there were ZERO fuckups aside from the cutting off when I first got on.

Downloading extra content via marketplace is a bitch, though.

To connect my 360 to the tubes

I run a wired bridge from my laptop (which is securely connected to my home wireless router) to the 360. No whammies.

Straight cat5 for me. Works great straight to a Linksys router.

BUT!!!

I am trying to do a media center thing and the damn thing keeps timing out (or the PC) after the authentication code but during the setup.

Any help?

Agreed.

I had a wireless setup for a while and it sucked. I’ve hardwired it now and it runs like a dream.

My friend has a wireless connection and it works fine.

Actually, just thinking about it right now, two of my friends have wireless adapters for their 360s. Both of them have no trouble connecting to Live.

Wireless connections increase your chances of having connectivity issues.

Hardwiring a connection is always the most effective solution.

I'm just afraid of messing up our whole Internet connection.

Anyways, Qwest is sending us a newer modem.

I never had trouble connecting to Xbox Live with the wireless router

I just had trouble streaming things to my Xbox with Media Center. So I hardwired it, and I’ve had nary a problem since.

Couple of things...

Your router may not be compatible with Xbox Live. Try updating your router firmware. Try turning off the firewall. If the Xbox connects without the firewall on, it is a port issue.

Okay, so I had a similar problem.

The router manufacturer wouldn’t talk to me because they only work through ISPs (It was 2Wire), but the ISP wouldn’t support the router and told me to get documentation from the manufacturer.

How did I do it? I googled it. Google the model number of your router and you’ll find someone asking exactly the question you have on some message board, and chances are some helpful nerd told him what to do.

Then do that.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
