Chris Young battling zombification
From Rotoworld:
Padres manager Bud Black says a crack in Chris Young's skull has to heal to ensure his brain doesn't get infected.
He also said that Young will need to have a "procedure" to repair his septum. Young still can't taste food and that his sense of smell hasn't returned. Black said it's too early to even begin talking about when Young might be able to start pitching again.
Sounds horrific. And to think that he managed to leave the field under his own steam when it happened...brave guy. Hope he goes on to make a full recovery and avoids Shelley Duncan's fate.
Of course, the fact that he is now out for the season (at least) has a negative impact on our drive for Strasburg. What we need to overcome this setback is a hero.
Cha Seung Baek: we never gave you a chance but now it's time for you to do us proud.

Man that really really sucks.
I liked Chris Young. Freak injuries like this are one of the worst things in baseball.

The incident is obviously old news
But the severity of injury has only just become apparent. At first he was just on the 15-day DL for a broken nose.

Not saying it isn't severe,
but skull fractures SOUND scarier than they are, and the septum issue is a common problem with a badly broken nose.
As long as he can get over it mentally, he should make a complete recovery from the physical injuries.

Anything involving the brain makes people squirm

Of course, of course...
But a crack in the skull is not a massive issue in itself. My younger brother fractured his skull skateboarding three months ago, and he’s already 100%.

That's good to know
Like Jeff said, it was pretty squirm-inducing to read about brain danger especially when previous reports suggested “just” a broken nose.

I fractured my skull when I was 6.
I was hit by a car while walking home from school (as it happens, that was the second time I was hit by a car).
ICU = good. They bring you everything – you don’t even have to get up to pee.
Post-concussion symdrome = bad. I was getting randomly dizzy and falling down for weeks after the accident.

Isn't Corey Koskie having severe problems with post-concussion syndrome?
Does not sound fun.

I bet Corey Lidle is having a hard time, too.
I’m sure it wasn’t Lupus or just Whiplash.

Baseball's concussion rules are ludicrous
in that they don’t have any.
In international rugby, a concussion requires you not engage in any practice or athletic activity of any kind until you’ve been asymptomatic for 7 days. Any episodes of dizziness, nausea, forgetfulness, headaches, light-headedness, or senstivity to light resets the clock.
In baseball, the Red Sox let Damian Jackson KEEP PLAYING after he suffered a Grade II+/III concussion during a game in 2003 (he collided with Johnny Damon), even though even a slight impact after that could have killed him.
Right now, Ryan Church plays as long as he’s not suffering any symptoms when he’s asked to pinch-hit, even though exertion (running) tends to bring them back, and the job involves having someone throw a baseball at you.

The real reason that the M's traded Baek to the Padres
Is so that he can whip our asses with Korean Rage every year and we can grow to truly hate our hated rivals, thus driving up attendance for those games.
