Why not use the Seattle U baseball field?

The last softball day we had there was nobody using it except some Seattle U students who were happy to join up with us.

by camomilk on May 27, 2008 9:41 AM PDT reply actions

is it a 90' baseline?

softball really needs a 60’ baseline to work… and you don’t want to be pitching off of a mound.

by johnbai on May 27, 2008 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe we could look into reserving

one of the fields at Greenlake. There’s quite a few there, though I imagine it’s probably too late for this time around. Still, it might be worth trying in the future. And it wouldn’t hurt to make a few calls and see if there’s one still open for the 31st.

Can anyone do this?

I’m at school right now so the opportunity isn’t really presenting itself.

I might be able to do this

I am out of college for the summer. I dunno how well I will do at softball though i have honestly never played.

by Edgar for Mayor on May 28, 2008 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Although I keep meaning to attend one of these,

I can’t do May 31st. I have league play the night before, and I’m already severely torn up from my tourney last weekend. A man needs time to heal.

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on May 27, 2008 3:20 PM PDT reply actions

I have a double header the next day in my league

Just come and half-ass it… you’ll still be better than most of us duffers!

by johnbai on May 27, 2008 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe.

But for 5 hours?? Am I reading that correctly?

I like midgets more than I should.

by Thingray on May 27, 2008 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

1-6 is a pretty lousy time

It creates a conflict for those of us who are also interested in watching the M’s lose play that afternoon. I propose changing the time to something like 4:30 – later.

by Katal LM on May 27, 2008 9:26 PM PDT reply actions

I wish to edit that proposal

Maybe have it 1-7 1-8 and have people start playing at 1 and then have the others who watched the Mariners lose play can be in game 2.

by Fin on May 27, 2008 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I like that idea

4ish is fine.

The Mariners should be losing well before the 7th so that’ll give people plenty of time to get to the field.

by Gomez on May 28, 2008 8:34 AM PDT reply actions

If it's gonna be 4ish, I can't make that.

It puts me back home in Portland too late for my comfort.

I don't like 4ish

If we play two games, that does take close to 4 hours IIRC (someone with more recent softball experience can confirm) and since if you say 4ish, people won’t show up until 5ish, that’s just too late in the day and you’re playing through dinner.

Stick with a 1pm start time. That way games are over ~5pm, can do beers and eats afterward if desired at a relatively normal time. I’ll at least be bringing a radio so the game will be on in the background.

by Matthew on May 28, 2008 11:07 AM PDT reply actions

I 100% believe this.

Also

It’s Washburn. What are the odds the game isn’t a wash (SEE WHAT I DID THERE) by the 6th inning?

Granted, Brett has season tickets and he’ll probably want to go to the game… but he obviously wants to do softball as well. Dilemmas.

by Gomez on May 28, 2008 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

It's Wash vs. the Tigers.

Worse comes to worse I’ll skip it and only go to 80 this year. But if it could be moved back that’d work better. Regardless, I’ll just go with the group.

Come on guys I want to play some softball! Get ten names on this list and I’ll show up tomorrow. If not I’m watching Felix, I’ve done plenty of BP/catch…if we don’t have enough for a 3 team game or something I’m out.

I'm going to be there

So if anyone’s worried no one will be at the soccer field at 14th/Cherry, there will be people there, and at the least we’ll be throwing.

by Gomez on May 31, 2008 9:45 AM PDT reply actions

Hey, back online

Yeah, there’s an online cafe two blocks from Piecora’s, where we stopped for postgame food and beer.

There were about 6-7 of us. Two R’s and Two L’s was dressed up in full baseball gear and also brought a neat little device he picked up somewhere that lobs wiffleballs, allowing you to take some BP with them. We had a bit of fun with that at the 14th/Cherry field, and then we took some BP with the wiffles, even standing two at a time side by side as Daniel threw up to 3 wiffleballs at a time and both batters took their hacks as others tried to snag them. Daniel had one wiffle that had holes placed so that it would break sharply if thrown, but we found that it actually hung if thrown between people. Only if we threw it a good distance did it break like a slider. Matthew brought his radio and we listened in on Felix pwning the Tigers as we played.

We had 9-10 people in all once we migrated to the 12th/Cherry field, enough to set up a cool arrangement where we all took the field, rotated positions and took turns at bat. I FINALLY was able to hit the ball the other way and even looped a couple liners over the infield, a stark infield from hitting right into the Gomez Shift. Two R’s and Two L’s (Daniel) was making great catches in the outfield left and right. Kyle (one of the lurkers Robert had mentioned) was able to mash softballs, and even hit one over the fence in straightaway left! The amazing thing was that Daniel was about two steps and a leap from making a great jumping catch at the fence anyway. Baker hilariously watched two consecutive catchable pop flies drop right next to him, though to his credit he pulled a few well hit balls to left. johnbai hit two great liners in a row that Daniel was able to snag deep in the outfield, the 2nd he caught on a great sliding catch.

I’m forgetting stuff, I know. Others, fill me in. Also, Boundary Bay Scotch and Anchor Stout gave me one of the best beer buzzes I’ve had.

by Gomez on May 31, 2008 6:49 PM PDT reply actions

I should post a picture of the grass stain

if only for grit points.

I also hate pitchers and was actively trying to kill Baker with drives and comebackers up the middle. You seem to hit for more power when someone’s crashing the plate, Eyebrows(?) has a lot of softballs for whatever reason which kept the tempo up for a while, so that was pretty cool.

And dude, Kyle can mash.

And … TOM EMANSKI VIDEO!

by Two Rs and Two Ls on May 31, 2008 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Dude, you looked a lot like Brett. Took me like a minute to figure out that it wasn't Brett.

Sorry guys I had to leave early and I didn’t really get introduced to everyone. Hopefully we will have some better weather at future softball meets.

by Fin on May 31, 2008 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, yeah

I walked onto the field and first thing I thought was, “Why the fuck is Brett wearing a baseball uniform and what’s he doing with all those wiffleballs?”

Then I saw it was you and then I thought, “Why the fuck is Daniel wearing a baseball uniform and what’s he doing with all those wiffleballs?” but that’s neither here nor there.

by Gomez on May 31, 2008 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I come to play.

I did that with the mushball team at Willamette and I got instant baseball-player cred.

by Two Rs and Two Ls on May 31, 2008 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Ah, I see

Speaking of player cred, in my last AB, I Manzanillo’d myself with a foul ball off the plate. That left me a bit queasy for the next few minutes, but I toughed it out.

by Gomez on May 31, 2008 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Almost

But given I didn’t puke in a trash can once out of sight, not quite

by Gomez on Jun 1, 2008 9:46 AM PDT up reply actions

OH SHIT TOM EMANSKI

As anyone who’s been to these things know, we’re constantly booting grounders, whiffing on fungo grounders, taking Raul-like routes to doom on long flyballs, throwing warm up tosses past each other and watching routine pop ups hit the grass. So I don’t remember who exactly brought up Tom Emanski and the commercials for his baseball drill videos, but we concurred that it would be a hilarious idea to have someone get a video camera, film us at a LL softball day playing like the amateurs we are, and then making a fake Tom Emanski commercial featuring our ‘drills’ before posting it on the internet for pure lollercaust.

BACK TO BACK TO BACK.
