Please don’t screw this up.
Jason Ellison, your Seattle Mariners legacy will not be forgotten.
Our failure to suck ruined my lame planned joke for the day:
“IN SOVIET RUSSIA WANG BEATS YOU.”
Oh well.
Somehow
I think the Yankees need Joe Torre more than Joe Torre needs the Yankees.

I had the most brilliant and hilarious comment ever for the other game thread
But now you’ll never see it
I saluted our vets by toasting a bagel...

Uhm, eating it...

Yay bigger lead.
Jason Ellison, your Seattle Mariners legacy will not be forgotten.
I really hope Beltre makes the all-star team as a reserve.
The Mariners might decide that a meaningless AS tag is enough to warrant a contract extension.
In other news as hilariously unexpected as the M's scoring runs: Aaron Boone just hit a 2 run HR
His FOURTH of the season. He’s currently batting .329.
Nats lead Brewers 6-0.
Coming into today's game (where he's 2 for 3) his line has been .313/.395/.522
Those are all going up after this. Regression to the mean, yeah…but nevertheless he’s been ridiculously helpful as a 1B/3B sub, starter, and bench bat this year.
So which method
will we use to blow this game??
It will be interesting
to see how many catchers wash can throw under the bus by the end of the season

This annoys me.
We’ve cut/traded/DFA’d lesser douchebags yet we hold on to Wash.

Is it just going to be non-stop Vitor artinez?

so where does PCC rate on the grocery chains in terms of price?
on par with Whole Foods?
Slightly cheaper that Whole Foods generally.
Significantly cheaper with a membership.
-aaron c.
by Aaron Campeau on May 25, 2008 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions
More expensive than TJ's.
But it’s more like a real grocery store; they have edible produce, fresher deli food, non TJ’s branded products.. I go to TJ’s once every few weeks to stock up on frozen food and stuff, but for everything else it’s PCC or Ballard/Greenwood Market.

Poking around the website
it seems the membership only gives you a discount once a month and on the 15th and 16th?
Hadn’t thought about the produce at TJs, I only go there for dry goods and dairy. I’m going to miss living near the Market if I do move away.
I'm not actually a PCC member
I was just basing that off of what PCC members have told me, so I’m probably wrong.
TJ’s produce is awful.

Richie's Ks are becoming a big issue.
I miss the days at the start of the season when he had a more respectable K rate, drew walks and had an OPS that wasn’t a problem.
I need a .gif of Raul tumbling. he needs to be added to this.

If I were a high school English teacher
I would have my students do a project where they try to interpret Beck and Jeff Mangum lyrics, and then I would give them all F’s.
English is an awesome thing to teach
You don’t really have to check the homework, you can assign any grade you want and get away with it as opposed to say history or math.

For a guy famed for his professionalism, I gotta agree...that's pretty fucking bush-league.
No excuses.
It's especially frustrating.
One of the few constants the last few years has been Ichiro’s complete and total awesomeness. If he’s going to be dogging it like this, I’m not really sure why I’d want to watch anymore. I will, because I’m stupid, but I’ll enjoy it even less.

but you’d be hard pressed to have what happened to JJ happen
to an opposing pitcher in Safeco, for him to be down in pain, and for
the camera to show the crowd… and show half the people in the crowd

Just thought i’d put that out there.
I didn't agree with the decision.
But maybe you’re right, it did work out beautifully.

I don't hate him
He just shouldn’t be managing a Major League baseball team.
by lemonverbena on May 25, 2008 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions
No you can't. It was actually an uncharacteristically smart move on Mac's part.
Go with your supposedly best reliever in the highest-leverage situation, even if it’s not the 9th.
Ain’t Mac’s fault that J.J. shit the bed.
yeah, you're all the geniuses.
nice game.
by lemonverbena on May 25, 2008 1:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Are you just being argumentative because you're pissed (we all are) or are you really this dumb?
Not only did Mac make the right move, it was a non-obvious right move. If anything he should be saluted for breaking out of the stupid “CLOSER IN NINTH ONLY” box and bringing J.J. in to hold the lead. J.J.’s failure to perform can’t be placed on Mac – J.J. was rested and pitching in exactly the sort of situation he is theoretically supposed to excel in.
JJ was the one who blew it
It might’ve been a bad idea if JJ had to go two innings, but he couldn’t even hold the lead for one.
I didn't "know" or predict that JJ would fail in that situation...
I just thought it stank of desperation on McLaren’s part. If we’re talking about 2007 JJ, then sure, none out in the 8th on plenty of rest makes tons of sense. But this is the ‘08 Putz. Get through the 8th and let him slam the door in the 9th.
A dispiriting loss to say the least, but I’m surprised that I would be jumped on so much for expressing an opinion on the manager’s strategy.
Have fun with your little echo chamber the rest of the way.
by lemonverbena on May 25, 2008 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions
Of course it was desperation
McLaren is desperate to win.

I once saw Neifi Perez bunt into the last out of a game with nobody on and a 1-run deficit.
This was back when he was with the Cubs in 2006. Obviously he wasn’t using enough speed, must have had ADD.

by Aaron Campeau on May 25, 2008 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm tempted not to watch the next three games.
Watching this team suck with Red Sox nation taking over Safeco is going to be awful.
Well at least we are going back home
Oh, what? You say the Red Sox are coming to town? The stands will be full of Red Sox nation?
Well, fuck me then.
Maybe it's just me, but are we giving Ichiro a bit too much shit?
The way I saw the play (and I watched the replay), he fucked up the play, and he definitely looked frustrated, but he was running toward the fence and Wlad was right there to pick up the ball. It’s not like he could have slammed on the brakes and went back to the ball any quicker than Wlad got the ball in his hand.
I guess I don’t see it as really giving up.
He was coasting to the ball is my beef.
If it was a one time thing, I’d shrug it off, but it hasn’t been.
I hate to use the term "body language"
but Ichiro could’ve at least pretended to run for the ball even if he knew he had no chance.
fuck that
the Raul Ibanez tumbling .gif had me in tears for several minutes. If we’re going to lose, I want more hilarity.
The one that makes me LOL every time
is the ball down the LF line that goes right by his stumbling ass.
That one is decent, but it lacks absurdity
The spiked throw and the ridiculous tumble are just….....you can’t get that from anyone else. Manny wouldn’t even pretend to try and make a play like that.
I really love the last .5 seconds of the .gif
The Tigers baserunner rounding first base is priceless.
I also love the way he never stops running on "Bad Angle"
He knows he’s fucked it up from the moment the ball leaves the bat
Side note
FSN shows Portland Beavers and Portland Timbers games but won’t show Seattle Sounders or Tacoma Rainiers games. Anybody have any idea why Puget Sound got the snub for Portland?
As I said above: I'm proud of this team for finding a new way to lose.
Been awhile since we booted a close one in agonizing, skull-crushing fashion.
So out of curiosity last night
I looked into the requirements for becoming an umpire in the minor leagues. Apparently you pay $4000+ (which includes room and board) to go to an umpiring school in Florida for 5 weeks in January/February, and if you finish with high marks, you’ll get recommended for assignments in Rookie ball or short season A ball, and the work pays starting around $1800 a month, which ain’t much. From there, you work up the chain, trying to get promoted to full season A ball, then AA, AAA (which pays around $3800 a month)... then, if you put in about 8 good years, you might get promoted to the bigs, where umps make anywhere from $80K to $300K a year.
So: a) no wonder umps are so ignorant, because who would be willing to go through that just to call balls and strikes… and b) if all my other prospects in life ever somehow run out….
Joe Blanton has grown a goatee

Surprisingly, he went pretty easy on Ichiro.
Said he should have taken charge of that flyball, which is true.
I don't think that's the case.
I didn’t see Ichiro unsure of whether Wlad was taking it or not. Ichiro doesn’t care. He’s established a clear pattern of taking anything he can get to. I saw Ichiro loafing it to the ball and then being burned when it carried further than he thought.
